Aah. The good ol' days. This film is a treasure, not much out there like it these days. Thanks for posting it.

We had a flat-top with a carport on Spinnaker Drive from 1970-1977. I don't remember that pool, but the shopping center brings back memories. It's fascinating to see the newly dredged lagoons. When we lived there most homes had docks built out back. This not only allowed easy access to the water, but it also kept the backyards from collapsing into the water. Wetlands are very unstable.

Thanks for the comment. The pool was behind the old Mystic Islands Casino between Radio Road and South Captains Drive. I believe It was filled in sometime in the late 70’s or early 80’s. I was there from ‘74 through ‘84 and don’t remember it being used. And yes, it took years to get the bulkheads built.

Hotels and other cheaper high rise rentals took the wind our of the sails for many smaller waterfront summer recreation areas. People are concentrated in the beach towns now. It's a shame that a lot of places like Mystic Islands are now neglected by most and the closest they'll get is passing it on the parkway. I take fishing trips often to the Mulica river and Graveling Point at the Mystic Islands. This area is one of my favorite areas in New Jersey. The scenery across the marshes and river system is stunning. I want to have a house at Mystic Islands when I retire in 35 years.

Don't wait that long. It might not be there in 35 years. I do agree though, Mullica River area is fabulous, unspoiled!

Brings back memories of going up to uncle Bob's marina in the 70's.

we moved there in 1960, paid $5200, bought a former sample that was a discontinued model, they were starting to sell the "Flat Tops" instead, and the Mariner was just introduced. Our house had no heat - strictly summer home.

I believe it was early 60s friends of my parent open a gas station in MI. They had one of the original homes but when the newer ones, raised 3 or 4 concrete blocks they bought one of those. They were out where an old tower was located. Their names were Sid & Pearl Bushell. I do not know if the station pictured here was theirs. It was an "off" brand for the time, maybe Phillips 66 or BP. It was like 60 years ago so a bit fuzzy.

i remember Sid - it was Phillips 66 - before Sid's station we had to put the 6 gal cans for the boat in the trunk and drive to Tuckerton - Sid was a good guy!

So glad you remember Sid. When they lived in Vineland they would take me home over night. We lived in Brigantine & they kept a boat at my family's boat docks. They had Foster children from a Jewish agency in Phila. I didn't know from cobble stones & got very sick in their car on the bumpy streets. Very sweet people. @@budcrane

The majority of the film looks like early 60s...but...we bought in August 1965 and the "flattop" (can't remember the name) was selling for $5,250 to start (Daily News August). The prices here seem too high for early 60s.. My dad bought the "Capri" which was slighly more maybe $7,000, the biggest house was called the Nassau at that time. We were on Burgee Drive North from 1965 to 1980. My house is one of the few on the block now that has not been renovated to 2 stories :-). I went to the pool every day the summer of 1966 and 1967. After that mostly did boating and occasional dip in the lagoon :-)

Such a shame Mystic went from this nice lagoon resort with plenty of public recreation to the neglected dump it's been for too long now

Check out my comment above. So true what you said. It's had it's issues for years but now they think they've fixed it when in fact they threw the entire baby out with the bathwater. Gentrification and replacement project they've had post sandy. 😢

wow, I remember all this scenes... looks like newest car was 1962-63; the gas station was not there in 1960, sothis is probably 1962-64. Note the ferris wheel on the beach

Thanks for your comment. I was thinking 1960 to 1964, so your 1962-64 estimate is probably spot on.

I just viewed again - great - I don't know where you found this. Is the salesman Sandy Miller? Sign said 5 marinas, video of Sail Drive lagoon
@alexbojanowski3292
@alexbojanowski3292 5 лет назад
I don’t think the salesman is Sandy. He would have been a little older when this was filmed, if I’m not mistaken. I know there were 5 marinas in the planning, the 4 basins surrounding the old Mystic Islands Marina (2 of which were never used as such) and the pier that used to be behind the building/lumber yard where the homes where pre-fabricated (Marina 5 as we all called it). But the pictures obviously show what is now the Great Bay Marina. This is the only film like this that I know of, but I also have a large stack of the old Mystic Islands newspapers from the late 60’s and early 70’s and I will post the articles and ads from them on Instagram in the near future. Thanks for you comments!

YES, i remember him older now too... this is a great video! Yes, the 5th marina , on the creek, was supposed to be a yacht club it said somewhere in a brochure. they were beautiful big pilings, and floating docks which i think were a new phenomenon at the time...

Look at our town NOW. Any differences? I'll let you decide Even the 90s and early 00's were beautiful here. Had it's problems we all mostly made jokes and laughed about. 10 years ago, basically after Sandy, it decided to die. Brought in the corporations and the busses of city people so they could get the subsidies, grants, and revenue for the low income housing. I hope it was all worth it. Because anyone with a fiscal salary above 100k annually left or are leaving as we speak. So much for that REVENUE. But they don't see it that way. They'll take the beach houses on the lagoon from city rich folks second houses and let the rest of the town go to shit with a permanent poor underclass. No working or middle class little egg harbor anymore like my parents moved here(from still locally, south and north )and gave birth to children here for. Just corporations and section 8 low income housing is all you got here now. Glorified gentrification of rural America. Doesn't just happen to the urban centers.
