Myth busting: We need to be taught pronunciation - Intermediate Spanish 

This makes sense. My pronunciation in Spanish is improving more and more over time as the sounds become clearer in my head, especially the double 'rr'. This is also true for Mandarin as I listen to more each day

Hola Pablo! I just returned from the Dominican Republic, and I was so happy and surprised that I could speak with so many natives as well as I was able to! I understood most of what people were saying to me, and I was usually able to respond in Spanish, even if it was just a short, elementary sentence. I made several friends this way, and I am so happy with my progress! I have around 175 hours of Dreaming Spanish, so I am very, very pleased! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Occasionally family or friends ask me if tones are hard, & I'm always like, oh yeah, I forgot that was a thing! I learned about CI from you before I started Chinese, so I've always just listened without worrying about such things. I don't really speak, but if I do want to say something, I just imitate the way I've heard a native say it. Often I can literally hear a specific person or character's voice in my head. Things that are hard to 'learn' analytically (tones, grammar, etc) generally turn out to be much simpler to 'get used to' through exposure.

Thank you, Pablo, for being a comprehensible input purist. It's such a relief to know that if I get enough input (escuchar, escuchar, escuchar), my brain will sort it all out and I'll become a successful Spanish speaker. Almost 700 hours of CI, so far and I'm super curious about how the next 700 hours will go. Keep up this meaningful work! By the way, I told someone else about you and Dreaming Spanish the other day, she watched a bunch of your videos and told me she now feels very positive about learning Spanish, unlike before. You're truly making a difference to people!!!

One technical thing, we produce/pronounce *sounds*/*phonemes*, not letters. Best regards Pablo, I have watched 2,697 videos since May and I keep going!

I suppose I'm in that 1% due to the fact that I was born with a hearing loss (wasn't diagnosed until I was 5, also learning disabilities, both which affect my speech, and still do.). In fact, I still mishear words (I'm 46 now). For example, in the outro, "la mejor manera de...", I keep hearing as "la mejor ma-nilla" (I don't even hear the "de" - I often don't hear endings to words, or sounds like b/p, or sh/ch/z get mushed into the same sound), and I'm 160 hours in. I doubt it would take that long for a "normal person" to pick up the correct pronunciation. It's because of this, that when I was young (18 months+), I was in a infant-development program, and learned to read early, plus picked up sign language. So, reading sentences with pictures (that were familiar to me - i.e., an event that happened at school, or going to the store), and picking up sign language is how I learned English. In my case, yes, I did need to be taught pronunciation my entire time in school. I know it's not 100% pure Dreaming Spanish, but I keep the subtitles on (in Spanish) simply because there are word, despite hearing them over and over again, probably over 1,000 times by this point, I still hear them incorrectly. Also, I still can't do the double 'rr', in any language. My Russian co-worker tried to teach me the rolling r and kept saying, "Nonono, that's French!". lol On a positive note, I can feel my brain starting to process the verb tenses as belonging to one verb and getting the context better, along with processing those connector words.

Based on my experience as a student of the language, your argument makes sense. Most kids and most successful speakers of Spanish as a second language didn't get diction tutoring. However, in my case, I feel I benefit from repeatedly saying new, difficult, words over and over a few times, and then relistening to a native speaker saying the same word, and then repeating again. I don't feel the need for a "coach" to do that.

Generalizar es siempre peligroso. Como bien dices, un gran porcentaje de personas no necesitan esa ayuda, pero hablar de porcentajes sin tener ningún tipo de fuente me parece arriesgado. De esta manera, puedes acabar desacreditando el trabajo de bastante gente que sí ayuda a sus alumnos con los problemas de pronunciación. Saludos de un compañero de profesión 👋🏼
