Hey Nate, great segment. I've heard a lot of these myths, only a few did I think were true. I trust and appreciate you clearing up those that I were true were not..
I have an "untrainable" dog, or nearly so. She was dumped on the side of the road at 6 weeks, was severely underweight and full of worms. She failed a big box training and we got a free redo. That trainer said she'd need tons of work to get basic obedience and may only ever achieve a certain level. We later did a board and train when some behavioral problems developed and she failed again and was kept longer at no extra charge. The board trainer said even she would have to work full time for the rest of the dog's life to get her basic obedience trained. We were offered lifetime training sessions, but honestly it's just not worth the fight. She has good house manners and comes when called. We got what we really needed and she's just a happy farm dog. I've always wondered how much the malnutrition and early separation from mom and litter mates were responsible for this.
I don’t know what do about my dog’s bad behavior. I’ve hired trainers, watched videos and tried different techniques, and just can’t get my dog to behave. He is aggressive to most other dogs, lunging, snarling, barking, with hackles spiked from head to tail. I’ve tried food, toys, affection, strong verbal commands, redirection, nothing works. If he wasn’t constantly on leash I would worry about him hurting another animal (people he loves). Do you have any videos that addresses this sort of thing? Thank you!

One thing I would like to know is about socializing your puppy and taking it to dog parks? I have a pitbull and I always get comments about her breed. I don't think being alpha has much to do with dog training, but I am curious. Are you asserting there is not a hierarchy in a wolf pack or group of dogs? If there is what would you call the "top" male and female? One can find plenty of examples of adult male wolves "correcting" other males, the most obvious example would likely be at the site of a kill. The top male gets the good internal organs and those lower in the hierarchy have to wait.
As mentioned in the video. @@NateSchoemer I understand what Dr. Mech says and his opinions. Those opinions change when a group of unrelated wolves is put together, they form a hierarchy which is not based on family ties. Likely not the place for the discussion and certainly does not have much to with dog training because nether my dog nor myself are wolves ;). I am curious as to how that might relate to groups of dogs, it is possible I am not seeing what I think I am seeing. Thanks for the reply.
@@overhead18 Wolfpacks are families. The parents educate their pups:tolerant and friendly. There doesn't exist an "Alpha" in wild wolf families. If the puppies grown up they wander away and found their own pack. Good literature is Dave Mech and Günther Bloch, a German scientist. The old Dominance /Alpha Theory is a myth. People have watched wolfes in captivity. These wolfes have strong resource guarding fights that wild wolfes don't have. About this false was created the misinterpretation of "rank fights". But indeed there are resource. Fights.
How do I stop my 2 year old Dobermann protecting me because I have an incurable illness (Multiple Sclerosis) I train her EVERY DAY (had to resort to an ecollar) don't have to use it unless she sense's she needs to protect me.. my question is 'Under the circumstances, CAN I TEACH HER I'M HER ADVOCATE AND WILL LET NO HARM COME TO EITHER OF US? She's JUST 2 year's old and don't listen to the ecollar boost when a dog walks past our garden. I have had numerous trainer's, even a Police dog trainer...to no avail. My girl is STILL OVER PROTECTIVE!! At my wits end! I have doing the going back to basics etc but i feel she thinks to protect me due to my illness/weakness? Jeeze i work my arse training her to convince her I'M HER ADVOCATE and NOT the other way around!! Any advice greatly appreciated.. from the U.K

Man... that example you gave about the owners who gave their puppy cocaine. That is the saddest story I have heard in a while. I am not a resentful person but I hope those people were held responsible for killing an innocent young animal.
I'm so glad you included myth number six. All my life I've believed the myth that my dog would develop behavioral issues if I let her sleep with me. But recently I brought a new puppy home and she wouldn't connect with me - until - I let her sleep in my bed. The difference in her behavior was amazing! Suddenly, she was willing to work on engagement training with me. Suddenly she cared when I said "yes" or "no". Suddenly she was listening. And last night, she crawled in-between my arms while we slept together. All my dog-loving life I've been missing out on this beautiful connection. Could you make a video about the myths and facts about spaying/neutering a dog? Is it true that leaving a dog intact will make them more aggressive? If you spay/neuter a dog when it's young, will it develop health problems later in life? Are there certain circumstances when spaying/neutering is helpful/harmful for a dog's working career? (Such as guard dogs or service dogs.) Thank you so much for your videos!
Great stuff again Nate!! The alpha thing boggles my mind. You have to walk through doors first or eat first. I believe there is nothing wrong with doing that.it’s just the ideology behind it.
I'm so glad that you went into details about the pack structure. Most people just talk about the Alpha wolf 🐺 not being a thing. However, not saying that their is a hierarchy.

I have to thank you for your obedience series. I can’t tell you how helpful it’s been. Like a godsend ♥️ In a month we’ve already begun to master sit, stay, down, bed, spin, kiss, paw, and up. And his house breaking is going far better than I thought it would by now too, much more seamlessly than any other dogs we’ve had. But I think it’s been my consistency too in recognizing his cues and creating a solid routine. He almost does his business on command! I’m really amazed how smart this guy is and we’ve only had him since January 15th. We sent our previous dogs to a world renowned trainer, who then trained us 😂 Because, as all dog trainers all know to be true, the dogs are far easier to train than their thick headed human owners 🤣 But we did that because we had young kids, busier lives and dogs that would be large at full grown adult size. We felt that would be our best bet to be successful in keeping them, not risking potentially resorting to having to rehome them because we didn’t train them properly, especially risky with having young kids and bog dogs. But with this little dude we just rescued, and our kids now being older teens, I have more time on my hands to do his training myself. Without your thorough explanations and various methods you encourage, I’ve found my groove with this little dude. The conclusion I’ve come to is that for this particular dog, I garner more positive results with more positive reinforcements than with our big guys, who often needed corrections early on to stay on track with obedience. I’m guessing because he’s so little (8lbs at 5months old) he just doesn’t respond well with many corrections, they’re known to be easier to scare and from that they react due to increased anxiety and fear. And the last thing I want to happen is this guy becoming increasingly fearful, so I need to instill a true confidence. So most leash pressure or a snap of the collar has proven so far to be counterproductive, all except leash pressure for leash training. That has been KEY. And probably the only correction that has consistently worked in a positive way. He realizes he’s got no other choice and that he gets rewarded whenever he moves forward, being in control of taking the leash pressure off himself allows him to make that decision with confidence. So after only a couple of sessions, he’s walking at my side, with his head held high, ears back and tail high up in the air. Like he’s on a mission, and very attentive to my movements. I’m so impressed! The more gentle “correction” that gets me the most success with him with just about everything else is simply turning my back and withholding my attention. Suddenly he’s very interested in following the commands. It just reinforces that dogs simply just want to be an important, valued member of their pack. The fact that you have restructured or rather reclaimed dog training to actually mean a partnership that your dog will willingly and voluntarily respect, that’s how you actually lead - that makes complete sense to me in a way I didn’t truly understand dog training before. You’ve honestly provided a whole new understanding to dog training for me. It’s all about connection and psychology. Not the antiquated alpha business.
I found your channel a couple weeks ago and I am SO grateful! I have a rare progressive lung disease and was given an Australian Shepherd puppy almost 4 years ago while I was hospitalized. She is from a rare Aussie bloodline that was bred specifically to be therapy dogs and the breeder told us that she should calm down around 6 months old and that I could train her to be my service dog if I wanted. Through a series of events, that did not happen, and I was not in a good place physically when we brought her home so her imprint stage was her learning all the wrong things and my husband and I in survival mode with three dogs. (We had a black lab I lost in 2020 and we have a Red Heeler.) Anyway, super long story short, Blue is incredibly intelligent but we also have been challenged just keeping up with her energy and her getting frustrated but over the last year I've been more stable health wise and been able to dedicate more time to focus on training and un-doing a lot of her bad habits and your channel has just helped me so much to keep her mentally stimulated and learning. I appreciate you so freely sharing your knowledge! It's a blessing from the Lord!
Do you have a video for introducing your dog loose to the inside house? My 8 month old German Wiredhaired Pointer will be let loose for a while in the day and then in the crate while I work and then outside for a few good hours playing in backyard, dog park, walks etc. When I let her out in the the living room and following her around like a toddler she will not have any accidents but she will try to grab anything and everything in her mouth. I try to keep it cleaned up as much etc. but she will grab ANYTHING. What is the best method to slowly get them to stop grabbing everything in the house.
12:40 I fell into this trap, too! When I took my puppy home at 8 weeks of age, I was afraid of telling him not to do his business or interrupting him for fear of causing stress and disrupt his metabolism somehow... He was so small! Luckily, when I took him to the vet a couple of days later, she told me that it's super important to start training asap before unwanted behaviours become habits. I even took him to a puppy play group following her advice, which turned out to be super fun for the dog! In 3 weeks he learned to answer to his name, do his business where I want him to, sit, drop stuff, and made huge progress in walking on the leash :) What a waste it would have been not make use of this time! Besides, training is not just making the puppy do what I want him to, it's also a great way to engage with him and challenge him. He literally can't tell the difference between training and play time - as long as I'm giving him attention he's happy 🙂🐕
I will however add!! that you should do a little more research on the David Meech Theory ,,while he does disprove ,that Alphas lay claim to their position through dominance/brute-force.. he does go on to say, that rank dominance is a (very real) thing even within family units in the wild He further discusses, how this behavior is enhanced in (captive or domestic) animals with less Freedom's ,creating more of a desire to compete for limited resources. Thanks, I really appreciate that. Yes, the parents are in charge of the pups. However, when people hear that they need to be the alpha, they often think they need to follow Cesar Millan's example and alpha roll the dog, or heel kick and knife hand the pups. When people look at it as a team, rather than a dominant issue, they tend to be kinder and better trainers to the dogs-a system based on teamwork and clear communication instead of dominance and submission. I'll look more into it, though. Cheers!

Great video. HUGE supporter of good professional trainers! Helped my rescue dog understand freaking out at other dogs, cats squirrels, birds, was not necessary; and working as a team, playing tug and catch was a lot more fun. Obedience is the foundation. Thanks & please keep your videos coming!!
Thanx nate another great video. Last year I was trying to train a service dog after watching the video where you started training Harley the training nd imprinting was going very well until one day the owner made a big mistake and let the dog loose it was almost knocked down ever since this dog refused to train and was very scared of cars I tried to desensitize the dog using the video where you teach the dog to learn to love fireworks this didnt help it's almost a year now this dog is just an ordinary pet now with bad habits still fears cars and even people I assume this dog has PTSD I'm not an expert or anything I'm just assuming what I would like to know with regards to this video is would this dog be able to be trained again even thou he is much older and the owners baby him nd fears cars he pulls away if you try nd take him for a walk he doesn't like leaving his yard I'm not an expert I'm just passionate about training dogs
More likely than not he can still be trained, but he may not be able to be a service dog. A service dog needs to be very comfortable and confident in all environments.

Totally agree. Looked at so many on RU-vid and have joined Nate's. Getting a working line GSD in approximately 6 months. Haven't had one since I was 20. My border collies are now in their teens so it's been a long time since I have trained a pup. Nate is one of the best out there.
I got a Saint Bernard puppy that was 8 weeks old when I got her She is 18 weeks now. And from watching your videos she is well beyond her training from where I thought she would be! She is a service dog and goes everywhere with me. I am constantly getting complaints on how well trained she is! Thank you so much for your help with her And I’m so glad I found your channel
This is a really great video. I recently had a conversation and I was trying to explain many of these to some friends. They aren't willing to listen to facts, especially about genetics. Most people aren't. Many get dogs before doing any research and I really wish they would. Also look for reputable breeders that health test and that means ofa chic not just saying your dog is healthy. Also temperament is HUGE. My dog breeder also does ENS and puppy culture for her puppies which I think sets them up for great success with all owners. Thank you for your videos.

I just found this video. My dog might have just gone through an extinction burst- she too is a leash averse dog and I've struggled to get her to accept or respect bekng on leash - Week 10 of dog obedience classes, aged 4.5years old and she was demand barking madly after a few weeks of learning to be quieter. We got 1 on 1 help with a trainer helper taken away from the group and focused on loose leash and she settled. The last two days she's walked loose leash as if she's been doing it her whole life! At week 10 class her behaviour made me feel like she was never going to get it.. Extinction bursts - my dog been going through a perpetual extinction burst maybe, until now!
Hm.. my pup bites the leash until we get out then he drops it. He also doesn't like being on my bed..i think because my bed is so high up and he's a pup so it's hard for him to get down. I generally pick him up to get him down. My problem is that he barks at other dogs and always goes towards there face. I'm working on it though trying to get him calm before he's allowed to approach the dog.
Nate, thank you for all of your vedios. I have been watching your vedios for 1.5 years. I have learned so much! I haven't bought a puppy yet because my German Shepherd will becone part of my ministry for my ministry for differently disabled adults. I need my dog to be properly socialized so I am waiting for Covid to end. I thought since I never had a dog it would be wise to use this time to learn everything I can before I purchase our dog. I have already memorized the steps to training such as luring with food. I can't remember what it is called but you demonstrated how to get your dog's attention to focuse on your face before the training starts. I just wanted to tell you that I love your vedios & I am so had that I found you on RU-vid. I bought your book too. Just wonderful advice & filled with all kinds of valuable advice. THANK YOU!!! I know by learning from you, although I never had a dog, I feel so much more confident to train & give my future dog the best life possible, so thank you so so much! You are doing an amazing job! I decided to hold off on purchasing a dog because my husband & I want to spend a lot of time traveling. I REALLY want a dog though, however, since I want Lightning (our future dogs name) to have tge best quality life possible we believe sacrificing a period of writing is necessary & we will be even more excited when we do receive him. Thank you Nate for all your videos, they are helping me a ton with my crazy boy. About myth 4 tho, my boy really feels some king of guilt :D . I've never yelled at him for doing accidents, cause he learned very fast where do to his business , but some time ago when he saw snow for first time, he ate a lot of it and than he did an accident in the bathroom. I was in the living room thinking that he is asleep, cause he was exhausted but he came to me and sat down with very sad/guilty eyes. I realized that somethings wrong so stood up and went to see what/where was done, he led me to the bathroom and was just like saying "i know this shouldn't suppose to happen, but it did, im sorry". This happens almost every time when he have stomach problems or vomit, i even sooth him down like "it's ok boy, just an accident let me clean it and we're good", but if he did something he really is guilty, or maybe its a confusion i don;t know, but its kinda sweet and funny. Thanks again and keep the good things coming. :)

strongly disagree the thought that some dogs are untrainable, just some dogs that take so much time and patience that 99.9% of owner, vets, and trainers will call them a lost cause.
You cannot fix a damaged brain unless you're a brain surgeon. It is a fact that some dogs have psychological problems. Could those problems be fixed with training? Maybe after years and years of consults and thousands of dollars which most people on this planet cannot afford.
