This episode just saved me, my girlfriend and my apartment. Few minutes ago oil in pan started to burn and she was moments from trying to put fire out with water. I remembered this episode and screamed not to do it. THANKS MITHBUSTERS! Gratings from Serbia!

I'm so glad Mythbusters is doing this one. It's something a lot of fire departments struggle with spreading awareness for. Grease fires are very dangerous. Everyone should have an ABC dry chemical extinguisher in the kitchens for emergencies.

If possible, put a lid on it first. Faster. Fire is rather uncooperative though.

wet towell works just fine and is usualy found in the kitchen :;) just put it over the pan to eliminate the source of air.

Exactly. If you cook something in grease or oil and it catches fire, you should not try to stop it with water, because water spills it and you hurt yourself and the kitchen burns down. The amount needed was a bit surprising, though. (And nice that you appreciate Finnish music!)

im 11 years old, and i set my kitchen of fire from greese. but the scary thing was, I was home alone. It was waay bigger then this demonstration. I didnt just put 8 table spoons of oil, I put like a whole bottle of oil and put it on high and then it caught on fire and my stupid self threw a bucket of water on it and it blew up. Im so thankful my house didnt burn down and i didnt get hurt

@TheKollav

Absolutely. Once I was in a hospital for children and met a young boy who had got severe 3rd degree burns on more than 30% of his body after trying to put out a grease-fire...

this might not b safe for anybody to hear but i cook on a large commercial wok with a water spigot about a foot above it. on average i only use one ounce of vegetable oil when i'm cooking(max two) and before i knew any better whenever that shit would catch on fire the first thing i did was douse it in water until there were no more flames. i cook under stainless steal which is degreased everynight and i wouldn't do this in any other part of a kitchen. still...

Baking soda. It's pretty much a perfect fire-extinguisher.

Not sure about the flour advice - isn't flour really flammable, especially when it's thrown and in the air?

Flour is more explosive than gunpowder,hope you haven't thrown any on a fire in the 12 years since this comment.
@SynchronizorVideos

Don't use flour on fire. Baking soda is an effective makeshift fire suppressant for basic stovetop grease fryers (assuming you don't have a proper fire extinguisher handy, which you should in any kitchen). It decomposes in the heat and produces carbon dioxide, which can help smother the flames. Not the best choice if you're dealing with a large volume of oil for deep-frying, though.

Don't kill me if this is a dumb question but how do you put out a greasefire?
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 2 года назад
Turn off the heat, put a lid or other (non-flammable) cover on the pan to cut off oxygen, and let the flames die. Pretty simple if you respond quickly If the fire's spread out of the pan, use a properly-rated fire extinguisher. A dry-chemical ABC-class extinguisher is your typical choice for an all-round home extinguisher, and there're also K-class extinguishers specifically designed for oil/fat fires. If you don't have an extinguisher, baking soda can get the job done too, but the chemicals used in proper fire extinguishers are more effective. If you don't have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, buy one, and mount it on the wall where it's easily accessible.
