Just stumbled across your RU-vid channel last night, I appreciate what you do and your research

Just rescued a pigeon. Was wondering how they would get the light through their feathers when I was told to buy a UVB for D production 😂. Using a light for Circadian rhythm makes so much more sense to me. Thank you. And thank you for explaining all of it so I can understand.

Hey there, I noticed that your nights don't have diffusers on them. That is concerning because LEDs are harmful to the birds eyes if they look directly into them

Good question. Unlike other sources of lighting where all of the light comes from one bright bulb my lights have many diodes that produce light spread out over the entire distance. For example, my 24” light has 148 diodes therefore each diode is .05% as bright as an incandescent bulb.

I just want to tell you how much I appreciate this. I'm still new to bird-keeping; I'm learning a lot, and really want to do what's best for my birds. I was going to fork out the $86 to buy the featherbrite fixture, but I now know that would be a waste of money. Thank you very, very much.

Hey Mark! Thank you so much for this video. I really enjoyed learning about the full spectrum lighting, you did an awesome job explaining it. Now I have to order your light strip for my baby budgie and feel good that I won't be harming him. As you explained in the video about needing a timer, I live on the Northeast coast. What would be the appropriate time settings? Also, do you offer a timer as well? Now I must watch your other videos and see if it was mentioned. Thanks again!! :)

Very good and thank you. I had to build my own led bulbs, in order to see if the steaks were the right shade of red, and not just blue, green or yellow, as the commercial bulbs shows you. if birds can see 10 or more times than us humane beeings, it is inhumane to give them fluorescent light, or a quartz burner emitting a single blast of uv, meant for sterilizing hospital germs.. Very good information, so let us build some good light for our pets. As they live in 12/12 equator, we dont face seasons only the rythm of the day, but I would go for a good single lamp as it is easy, as the lamp(s) that simulates morning till evening is way more expensive to make. The bulbs I use in my house is made for my eyes, but green plants love them as well for growing, but wont flower as we all have certain preferences. Would be easier if we could ask the bird, what to make :-) Thank you for a good walktrue in the walley of deads :-))

Hey Mark, I just bought your 24” parrot cage light bar off Amazon. I currently run the Arcadia UVA/UVB light. My cockatiel loves getting right under it as it is on top of the cage a few inches away from him. He looks directly into the bulb and fake bites the light bulb and chortles. I’m afraid for his eye sight. I do have one concern though: doesn’t LED also cause macular degeneration and cataracts? Anyways, can’t wait to get your light in the mail. It costed almost a hundred bucks, so I hope my little guy likes it!

My lights only have wavelengths in the visible spectrum which is safe for any bird at any distance. The only published study that I know of concerning damage to bird’s eyes concerns UVB.

Mark, I watched the shorter version first, and I have to say this one does a great job of the deep dive into the science behind it. And I am about only half way through the video but I wanted to know what you recommend lighting for? Is it for simulating longer daylight hours for breeding purposes? Do you think it really does help birds see their food better? I am wondering if it will help wean a baby quaker from formula to including fresh veggies with their pellet/seed mix.

Kind of confused here. On your site you guys say "But, good UV-emitting bird lighting, fitted correctly, does help captive birds immensely." What lights are you referring to exactly? Full spectrum lights? The ones you sell, or the ones that are making these claims? Just trying to understand so I am not wasting money, and obviously want a happy pet.

Hi Mark, great video! I rescue pigeons, i have a pigeon room with no windows, where i keep pigeons for recovery in cat transport boxes. they don't stay there for long, so i don't really care about uva/uvb, i just want a light with a good spectrum so they aren't interrupted in there view.. I was going for a T5 39w bulb with 4000k to 5500 K, they are around 6€ for one, not want to go with led. for some private reason. Do you think it will give them a good light, I don't want them to get active or breedy from the light, i just want them to relax till they can be released again.. would give them 10 hours light per day. hope you can help me :) best wishes

I just purchased the 24in light for my African Grey hoping to provide more enrichment and balance into his routine. (Amazon’s description for your light is full spectrum by the way!) To be completely honest watching this video from 3 years ago on your “research” which seems very one sided all while showing research that’s from 20 years ago and not proving any comparison to your product doesn’t prove anything to me other than this is strictly marketing. I rather use a bulb from zoomed for avains that’s backed by research and studies showing how in healthy and appropriate usage UVA and UVB is beneficial. Also the fact you’re using regular bulbs and a reptile bulb none of which are even close to be accurate for bird use shows ignorance. I’ll be returning this light and going with my other option.
@markschack5668
@markschack5668 7 месяцев назад
The point of this video was to pass along proven facts about the science of light and how it’s physically impossible for an artificial light to simulate natural sunlight. The facts are based on physics which hasn’t changed in thousands of years let alone 20. It was not a promotional video for my light. Please pass on all of the research and studies that zoo med has done for their light, I would love to see it. There is nothing published and when I contacted the company and asked for the data I got no reply. To find marketing for my light I have it on my website under the education tab. Be sure to read the article that explains how lights like zoo meds damages a bird’s eyes, it has a link to a published, peer reviewed study on the subject. For anyone reading this post I beg you, please please please do not put a reptile lamp over your bird even if it comes in a box that says it’s for birds.

I have a single question about lights for a budgie, are colorful LED lights safe?
@markschack5668
@markschack5668 3 года назад
Are you referring to the RGB lights where you can change the color? My guess would be that they are not unsafe. I wouldn’t have them constantly changing and if you set them at some funky color the birds may not like it but I doubt if it would harm them.

and also, im not trying to hate, because i just bought your light on amazon but I still dont know why your light is much better for birds than other bird lights that are also set to a photoperiod
@markschack5668
@markschack5668 3 года назад
I did address those “types of comments” but I am only aware of little true research. Typically people copy paste information known since the 50’s as it pertains to humans guessing or lying that it applies to birds.
@markschack5668
@markschack5668 3 года назад
Chickens are HIGHLY studied because they are a multi billion dollar industry. You would not treat a parrot like a chicken. The objective in chickens is to prepare them for the dinner plate in less than a year.
