Firstly a warning, and then a thorough test with, amongst other things - white birds

Hello Sean, I total agree with you. I do not do must video work on either of my Z8 or Z9. But have been shooting image from Red Squirrels to F1 racing cars. I am find that the more I use these camera the more I am confident i am with there auto focus systems. As to camera over heating as you are in the UK like me the ambient temperature may well be a factor as in the UK its seldom of 22% C.

Cracking video and it’s great to see these issues addressed so systematically and scientifically. Plus of course it’s good to know that you’re not computer generated 😂

Really, I think you did a pretty fine job of tracking the gulls with both the Z8 and Z9. I took the Z8 on vacation recently and my daughter and I took turns trying to track Brown Noddy birds in with it. It certainly takes a bit of technique! My guess is that the dedicated bird tracking on my Z9 is slightly better at tracking birds than the "Animal Tracking" on my Z8. (I was also using the Nikon Z 100-400 f4.5-5.6 VR S.)

It's a great set up isn't it (the Z9 / Z8 and the Z100-400). It seems that the Z9s' bird tracking is a touch more reliable but I'm sure that the Z8 will get it soon

I just posted a video about my Z8 overheating, while not even recording. I am in Thailand where the temperature and humidity is higher than the UK, which makes this a regular occurrence during video shoots. I shoot to my CF Express card and they will show hot card warning typically before I'm done with my 15-20 minute recordings. I notice during your test, you used the SD card and was recording in 4K 8 Bit, which is easier on the camera. I've tested my Lexar Professional 256GB SD (250 MB/s) card up to 8K 30 UHD (will not do RAW) and it works fine. I'm going to start using the SD card for my talking head videos to keep the heat down, as SD cards don't tend to get as hot as CF Express Type B cards and see how that goes. I also had the A7R V here in Thailand and had it shut down on my just setting it up. I have also received hot camera warnings but, not hot card on the CF Express Type A cards they use. I also have the FX30 and while I wanted to use it as my vlogging camera, I now leave it on the tripod, in the "studio" solely for my talking head videos, since it has a fan and never throws any temperature warning here. I am looking forward to Nikon doing a camera with active cooling while recording up to 8K RAW but I suspect that will be in a Z8 II or some other body we haven't thought of yet.

Thank you that info it's fascinating. I guess it's the card that's overheating rather than the camera itself. The heat that my CF Express card generates , even in the reader, is a lot higher than my XQD cards. I wonder if Nikon will do the active cooling or consider it up tio the card manufactures to sort the problem.

@@seancameronphotographic3740 Yeah those cards generate heat, the faster they are the hotter they run. In the video, I also showed how the camera with no card inside also got hot and shut off. I even tried recording to the Ninja V, with no card inside the camera and it got hot camera warning during the test shoot.

Hi Sean, Did you use the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S or was it the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S? It could be worth a comparison between them and the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR. The AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR is quit a bit cheaper ;-)

I used the Z100-400, today I tested it against the Tamron SP 150-600 at 400mm and the Nikon won hands down. Love the idea of testing it against those others you mentioned.

I would rather see the new 180-600 Mirrorless lens on the Z8
