In this video of my N Gauge Model Railway layout Elvenhome, I show the work as I start to construct a timber yard that will sit at the canal basin. Although the scenic work I had planned to do was thwarted by not be able to get the York show, I have completed some of the scenic work. My Castle gets to pull a new rake of Collett coaches

Hi Richard. I had a 30 year break from the hobby while work and life took over. As you can see I am thoroughly enjoying my return to it. Never too late (hint hint) I’m glad you enjoy the videos. Stephen

The canal scene is really taking shape, most enjoyable Stephen. The scene around 9.25 is fantastic.

Thanks Chris. I do have some emerging scenes to set the camera at because of the canal. Once I am done there, if I get it right, I think there will be quite a few nice looking sightline. Stephen

Thanks very much I have been meaning to get the Collett coaches for a while and I must say they are very good models. I think Dapol are due to issue a new set of them in a couple of months time. I suspect they will go quickly, although with a bit of patience you can acquire them second hand, so my rake of five is now seven. Stephen

Another thoroughly informative video. The progress around the basin with the timber mill and its materials in various states of production is really super.

I can’t remember where Tom Horton mentioned this channel but, after I watched a couple of episodes, I was hooked! I’m really enjoying vicariously (if that’s the right word) building the layout through you. I’m still a month or two away from catching up to this episode but thought I’d drop in a comment to let you know how much I’m enjoying your videos. Keep them coming …

Hi Ron and welcome to the channel. I think Tom mentioned my channel during one of the livestreams from Allens. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. I have great fun doing them, and find them an excellent way to encourage me to get on with the building the layout. Stephen

Hi Paul I was pleased both that Chris had some Colletts and that I could help him move them on. He is such a nice bloke to talk to. Gary has indeed been in touch and has some more mud magic in his next video. Interesting stuff in the tub and I shall have a play before I use it in earnest. Stephen

The area at the top left of your timber yard (as seen from your video view) would seem to be an ideal place for storing drying timber. Layout is looking really good.

@Elvenhome Год назад
Thanks Graeme. I need to block in where the scenery that surrounds the canal basin is going to be, and I started doing that this afternoon. That will tell me what space I have for the wood piles. I think the timber yard is going to be the major industry that the basin now serves. Stephen

Fascinating update Stephen. Great that you got the coaches from Chris. A fair bit of his stock has made its way north of the border (Between Pullmans to EK and all the things he sent you in addition to the coaches). That was a shame you couldn't get down to York but in the circumstances understandable. There is a model rail show in Linlithgow this weekend which is all things N Gauge. - St Michael's Hall Kirkgate. Organised by Rainbow Railways with over 10 N gauge layouts. One, going by the name, may have canal theme..... so you may be interested. Cheers Euan
@Elvenhome
@Elvenhome Год назад
Thanks Euan. Chris appears to be doing well in moving on his stock. I think Mark Ireland has a few things to pick up from him. Just a pity he can't keep the railways going, but the dioramas he is doing really are something. I am going to go along to Linlithgow tomorrow morning. I think it needs supporting especially as I think it is virtually all N scale. As it happens there is also another exhibition in Dalmahoy on Saturday and Sunday by Pentlands Model Railway Club who meet out at Dalkeith which I may go to on Sunday. Need to check bus timetables but with my bus pass its a free trip. Stephen

Hi Stephen, Chris Inge, top bloke, he sent me loads of bits and pieces which will be invaluable as I progress with Exehaven mk2. The Collett coaches looked excellent as they ran round behind the Castle. Shame about the show but you have got yourself an impressive haul of goodies there which I shall look forward to seeing what you do with them! Actually I’m interested to see the mud, I think Gary used some on his Settle and Carlisle layout, and I intend to use some myself. Very enjoyable as usual, cheers for now Stephen, John

Thanks very much John. Chris is a great bloke, and nice guy too. It was a pity to miss York, but I will be there for the 13th. There is some interesting stuff in the scenic material including some things I hadn't seen before. So it will be an adventure for us all. The mud is intriguing stuff and Gary has used it to great effect on his layout. I am hoping to use it to put in the path down the hillside. I'll need to do some experiments with it first I think. Hi Stephen! A shame you couldn't make it to York this time around but the NGS show looks like it will be a great event if the details in their latest magazine are anything to go by! Looks like you're on top of creating realistic looking timber for your timber yard! Enjoyable update as always! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian. It was a pity about York, but LNER today gave me full refund, and I had fun on the internet spending the money I would have spent at York. I am looking forward to the May show. James St is well worth the journey and it will be nice to be at a show dedicated to N gauge. The timber yard is coming along, and I am busy building stacks of timber for seasoning. Was a joke Stephen, at one point you said you ‘ couldn’t be Arsed ‘ (19.25) referring to making a tool, was quite numerous in context, keeping the entertainment value going I see 😊 I like your approach to the models, accuracy isn’t all but does add to the model, I’m picking up the tips. 👍

Hi Stephen, great update and the timber yard and buildings will look great and such fantastic detail! The WWS muds are great I can highly recommend them I also now use the Vallejo European mud which you will see what I do with it in my next video. My only question and comment is what you are doing with high eleven? The way I see it is that the edge of the top board seems very close, maybe too close to the timber yard? Maybe less is more and cut that board back and have a shallower hill to then not close in the excellent work you will have done on the timber mill. Just a thought? Cheers Gary
@Elvenhome
@Elvenhome Год назад
Thanks Gary. I’m looking forward to using the muds, I’ll have a play with them first. I’ll also look out for how you use the Vallejo muds. It is funny you should mention the board of High Elven. I put all the track back in place on it yesterday just to see where the track limits need to be and to start blocking out where the cliff face needs to come and the road down to the canal. One thing which was good is that I do like the track layout so will be keeping that , but I’ve come to the same conclusion that the board either needs replacing with a slimmer one or this one, if it can be saved, cut back further. It is in a couple of pieces and one of the joining braces would need moving. Stephen

Would the cricut machine that Everard junction uses give you the results cutting balsa at N gauge?
@Elvenhome
@Elvenhome Год назад
Hi Mike. I do have my eye on getting a Cricut 3 and it can cut through balsa wood. I think it would be invaluable for scratch building generally as Richard has used for in Everard Junction. At nearly £400 it is, as they say on TV shopping channels, a considered purchase. My razor saw will have to do in the meantime. Stephen
