The painting was painted in 1940, on the eve of difficult trials for Russia, which the artist had already foreseen. The idea for the painting was the epic “How the Heroes died out in Rus'.”
N.K. Roerich wrote that once in ancient times the epic “How the Bogatyrs died out in Rus'” was composed, but at the same time the people believed that they would wake up at the destined hour. They will come out of the mountain caves and join in the construction of the people!
