My n14 has a check valve in fuel system similar to the oil check you were showing us. Thanks for the info and your time to share 👍🏻

Man! That is great information! I ran trucks for over 30 years and never had anyone tell me nor did I think about changing out the oil cooler! Made cold chills run down my back just thinking about it!

The old style NH engines had an external oil pump but it was more heavy duty than that N 14 setup. I think it was the NH....Dad rebuilt an old Nh 220 for a coal crusher. Anyway, it was running wide open and the loader operator dropped a big chunk of slag and it clipped the oil supply line. 30 seconds later the motor destroyed itself....shot the top of one of the pistons across the yard!

That there is what's called a tube sheet. Very well made and very efficient, when not plugged. Go Jeff go.

I went to this oil cooler shop in CT and they had ones for huge tanker ships and such the oil cooler they were repairing was the size of a small pickup truck just nuts to think how big that engine must've been

I cut my teeth working on 855s and N14 engines. I really like the design on them and how you could work on them. Some days I miss it but most of the time my back says I dont.

Some electric N14's have a different pick up tube. By the looks of the bearings they have not changed the oil regularly. They like fresh oil every 10k miles. If you have a lot of erratic operation of the STC consider converting to fixed time.

You would think for the pick up it would have a much larger surface area.

Channel end and floating end usually on heat echangers but yours simply has a dome end for return flow on a two pas exchanger

Suction line with o-ring I always use silicone on o-ring ! no leaks

Service coolant addative and proper bleed air out coolant system is critical for Cummins low flow systems.

Pay attention to the suction line ,there,s 2 orings and a gasket, the oring in the aluminum part ,is particular, it seals the tube to the aluminum piece

Since you have already got the oil filter housing off you might as well check or change the oil filter bypass valve that is in the cast housing just above where the filter screws on 👍

Flex Seal will make that hose like new!

There was a bad run of oil filters for a while that the orings at the top would come apart and go thru the oil system plug shit up and plug piston coolers up and score pistons

We put never seize on the block side of the pan gasket to keep from sticking on logging equipment not sure if there's a downside of doing it that way

love my N14 easy engine to rebuild, i had a cracked oil pump gear that caused my problem thank god the computer shut off .... put a pump in it in a parking lot lol 🤷‍♂️ i just work on marine and equipment now trucks just private not for hire ✌🏻

Every time I’ve worked on n14’s or any of the 855 series Cummins I’m always left scratching my head, and usually swearing too

Those cooling nozzles are huge compared to a Big Cam engine.

That pick-up tube looks like it was handed to an apprentice with a hacksaw, lol! I'd maybe cut most of the slots out and braze some fine stainless mesh over the holes if I was really concerned about it.

Your new shop manager is a bit high strung, my wife and I had a Corgi (our first "child") 15 years and just had to put her down neart a year ago, but they're fun little shits!! When we had ours fixed, she rode in the truck with me for a week runnin side dump for a 5 acre staging pad for windmill pieces to keep her out of the stitchin. Got her nest built up enough so she could see out the windows and was happy as a clam haha

I thought the check valve was inline after the STC valve on the back of the block between to JIC lines, but then again I have the BC4 version and not the N14.

I never had any problems with the piston squirters in the big cam 400s

Use a thin coat of grey silicone between the block and oil pan gasket and pan and gasket. If you ever have to take the pan off it will peel right off with a razor blade. Those gaskets are a pain in the ass to get off

With the state of some of those hoses you have removed the thought occurs to me what is the state of the internal lining of some of them. However some of the rubbish in that cooler is coming from somewhere or other but the overall question is just where?

Also, I use these amzn.com/B07KVQGR3K to remove gasket material. Beats the heck out of scraping, doesn't remove metal and it's fast.

When in doubt just replace the part. Better cry over a "$100" part vs a $10,000+ engine.
