N17 by The Saw Doctors
Well I didn't see much future
When I left the Christian brothers school
So I waved it goodbye with a wistful smile
And I left the girls of Tuam
And sometimes when I'm reminiscing
I see the prefabs and my old friends
And I know that they'll be changed or gone
By the time I get home again
And I wish I was on that N 17
(Stone walls and the grasses green)
Yes I wish I was on that N 17
(Stone walls and the grasses green)
Travelling with just my thoughts and dreams
Well the ould fella left me to Shannon
Was the last time I travelled that road
And as I turned left at Claregalway
I could feel a lump in my throat
As I pictured the thousands of times
That I travelled that well worn track
And I know that things would be different
If I ever decide to go back
Now as I tumble down highways
Or filthy overcrowded trains
There's no one to talk to in transit
So I sit there and daydream in vain
And behind all these muddled up problems
Of living on a foreign soil
I can still see the twists and turns on the road
From the square to the town of the tribes

Seriously, 1990 this was released, I remember it was late in that year. I was raised in a midlands town and a group of us used to pile in the back of an old Peugeot 207 traveling on our way to Tullamore. Listening to this song always reminds me of the almost met this girl, almost shifted that girl, and the inevitable, you really got lucky with the other girl. Drunk out of our tree, After Ireland did so well in the World Cup in Italy, after doing the Leaving Cert, turning 18, the future really was ours and seriously, what a time to be alive. Thanks Mike, Colm, and Joe for the memories. Rest in Peace Sean, hold my spot at the bar my friend, we'll get drunk again some day and hold each other up, somehow. Thank you for letting me know what a wonderful human being you really are.

I'm a ride share driver in Melbourne (australia) and yesterday had four Irish girls in the car just beltin' this song out at the top of their voices, the passion for Ireland was thick in the air and reminded me so much of when I was a young man hitch-hiking through the south of the Emerald Isle. God bless you beautiful people of Ireland!

This song has such a special place in my heart. I was at the miracle match between Munster-Gloucester. When the celebration and sing song ended, N-17 came on the speakers. I stood on the field at Thomond Park, beaming and taking it in. Ever since N-17 is my victory song.

I remember being in Mulleady's Pub with the band after a show. Dave Mulleady was there before my world fell apart. Before I knew it could. I recall one of the band member's girlfriends had had a fairly serious hand surgery and how I enjoyed the chat and the drink and wished her hand well faster than it sounded it would get well. It felt like an ordinary night in my life out with another band going somewhere. I was always around such circles. It was a joy listening to this song. For a moment I was back in that pub. Nothing special really, just a moment I recall well because I like the Saw Doctor's sound and recall nice people.
