Doubles never factor into the GOAT conversation, but it is still impressive that Nadal won some legit doubles tournaments including the 2016 Olympic gold. Solid stuff.
I always say the same about everyone, not just about my favorite, Nadal. It's not about winning a match or a tournament. A player's status is won through the constancy of his or her achievements. I have respect for these amassing double players Nestor/Simonjic. If they're the best doubles team in the world it's because of their record and excellence. I would not say that Nadal/Lopez are a better team but they make an excellent team and they are very capable- as we have seen!!
A great honour and victory to win this Final against the best doubles team in the world. Nenad Zimonjic made a perfect team with Daniel Nestor and they are by right the No1. A great way to leave the tournament for Nadal after his (not too good play) cost him the singles match. With a SF in AO and another here Nadal is coming back to obtaining good results. Next Miami!! :)
@gabe228 marc is an excellent doubles player. the winning ability works both ways. without marc, rafael will not be able to win the doubles tournament either. someone needs to set it up and the other needs to finish. perhaps he is not great in a singles tournament but why would that matter in a doubles tournament? would you say the same for the bryan brothers? or nestor/zimonjic?
This just shows the huge difference between singles and doubles. Just take 2 decent singles players (top 20, top 30) and they can beat any pair. Remember when Federer/Wawrinka steamrolled through the B Brothers at the Olympics?
Of course they won't start winning straight away. What I meant was, give, say, Federer/Nadal at the top of their game a couple of weeks of training and they go unbeatable for a whole season. Look what the Williams sisters are doing in the doubles circuit. Almost each time they show up they win the trophy.
And you give me 1 example in your defence? The fact that they're Nadal and Djokovic doesn't mean that they ought to every single doubles match they play. But surely they can beat any pair (just as much as lose to any other).
Another example, John McEnroe at the doubles circuit. Just think about it. 2 good singles players CAN win a doubles Slam but a good doubles player ha NO CHANCE to even go deep in a singles tournament.
