Naegele's rule example with practice questions for maternity nursing NCLEX review. This maternity lecture will help you learn how to calculate an estimated delivery date (EDD) using Nagele's Rule. Naegele's rule works best for women who have a 28 day cycle and is based on the typical 280 day gestation (40 weeks) period. The date calculated with Naegele's Rule is just an estimate for expected delivery date. When solving for an EDD with Nagele's Rule it is important to remember the months that have 30 (thirty) days vs. 31 (thirty-one) days, and of course, February has 28 days. Always give February 28 days (regardless of leap year) to avoid confusion. The months with 30 days are September, April, June, and November while the other months are 31 days. Don't forget to take the practice quizzes that will test you on Nagele's Rule.

Hello :) Thanks for taking the quiz! I rechecked the answers and here they are: Question 2: September 1, 2017 Question 5: June 4, 2017 Question 7: November 6, 2016 When you are calculating are you taking into account the months that have 30 vs 31 days? Also, are you counting back and adding the right amount of days/months because it seems like your answers are a month early than the correct answers. I hope that helps!

RegisteredNurseRN shouldn't the answer be September 2, 2017? Since November only has 30 days, so adding 7 days to November 25 would give you the 2nd day of the next month.

Hello :) No, the answer is Sept 1, 2017. When solving this EDD with Nagel's Rule, it is best to use the following calculation for patients whose LMP falls between April-Dec: LMP Date: November 25, 2016 Subtract 3 months from the LMP (August 25, 2016) Add 7 Days to the LMP (Sept. 1, 2016)...august has 31 days Add 1 Year = Sept 1, 2017 For LMP January-March, it is best to use this one: LMP Date Add 7 Days to LMP Then add 9 months If you calculate the EDD using the first method, you will get Sept. 1, 2017.
