Yes, so true, so many heroic stories. The 7th of October showed the worst of human nature, the barbaric and demonic monstrosities of Hamas and of some Gazan civilians, opposed to the best of human nature: selfless courage and determination to save lives on the part of Israelis, a tiny part of whom were Israeli Muslims. God was at work that day, and he galvanised his people.

We see how important it is for us to internalize that God, and only God is the one who, at the end of the day, can keep us safe. Of course, we need to take steps on our own for our own safety. During the first centuries after Jesus' ascension, there were people in Rome who believed Jesus was the true Messiah but who, to fit in with their Roman neighbors, adopted a hatred of Hebrews similar to that of the Romans. (More about which on request.) It was always wrong to hate Hebrews and it was always wrong to require believers to lay aside the instruction in the Torah/Pentateuch as a condition of citizenship (in the Roman Empire or elsewhere). Every civilization has a backstory. There was never anything wrong with using the story of Jesus as the backstory of nations in western Europe or the Americas but a “gospel” that fails to include the backstory of the Hebrew Bible is an incomplete gospel. Part of the reason for the decline of Western civilization is because of the promotion of an oversimplified “gospel”. By the time Jesus was born, the majority of the members of the Sanhedrin - who styled themselves the guardians of the faith of the Hebrew patriarchs - had replaced that faith with a religion based more on traditions and rabbinical interpretations of the Torah than on the actual instruction given through Moses. Jesus opposed SOME of those traditions (not necessarily all of them) but he never advocated for laying aside the instructions in the Torah. I consider the faith of Jesus to be the true continuation of the faith of the Hebrew patriarchs - a faith that is similar to but also different from traditional Judaism Yes, followers of Jesus are “grafted in” but into what? It seems that not many people who profess faith in Jesus have considered this but Romans 11 can be understood to mean that the faith of Jesus grafts us into the faith of the Hebrew patriarchs. Non-Hebrews can become TRUE Israelites by grace through faith the same way Ruth did. And Hebrews who don’t have that faith can become TRUE Israelites by grace through faith the same way Ruth did. (More about which on request). There certainly is some value to observing the traditions of Judaism but nobody becomes part of biblical Israel by observing traditions - whether they are the traditions of Judaism or the traditions that were adopted from Roman beliefs and practices and are widely considered to be “Christian.” I’m not opposed to the existence of the modern political nation of Israel. I think our own government (United States) should have the same policies toward that nation as any other nation - i.e. predicated on the same factors that should influence or policies toward any other political nation. I don’t predict the following but I expect to see the day when a higher percentage of Hebrews than non-Hebrews will have the faith of the Hebrew Patriarchs - faith in a Messiah who can be king of the universe but who can never be a political messiah.
