Our Nagano trip, day three, was a little bittersweet. The pandemic brought sad changes to this popular tourist spot. When we had a date here over 40 years ago, we saw lively, crowded, festival-like activity. This time it was quiet with few people in spite of the fact it was a national holiday. The town has effectively preserved its Edo-period structures and history while keeping itself sustainable for the next generation. I recommend a visit to Tsumago-juku.
