The great thing about guitar is the ability to use open strings to your advantage. This lesson is about using a technique called pedal point with open strings to play fast and musically.
Get the complete lesson here: www.fretjam.co...
You'll here famous examples of this technique in songs such as AC/DC's Thunderstruck (lead) and Metallica's Master of Puppets (rhythm), among countless others.
Once you've watched the video, head over to the lesson page where you can grab my PDF with 48 pedal point exercises, backing tracks and more, in exchange for a donation of your choosing...

This is excellent. Thank you! I really like how you linked tones, picking patterns, neck diagrams, and chord intervals in a way that is easy to see all of these things at the same time. I found this very intuitive to understand at many levels.

Hey Fret Jam, with no doubt one of THE music theory pages on RU-vid. Right to the point of the subject, no stammering, not one word to much or missing - and out of those reasons no confusion. In short: Fabulous!!! Thank you for your huge effort ... I like to wish you a great 2018 ... may the muses keep staying very close to you!

This was such an amazing lesson, so easy to follow. Even a beginner like me who never improvises or does complicated solos found it very informative and easy to digest. Thank you so much keep up the good work

Great lesson. Always so clearly explained and easy to follow. Best guitar theory teacher on youtube! As a counterpoint to your pedal point I'd just like to add that this technique could probably be considered a more advanced (much more advanced) version of the Drone! For example, when I'm playing an octatonic dominant bebop scale, which is a jazz scale of sorts, if you put a drone in there or pedal around a certain point, it suddenly turns in to one of the classical hindustani rags. That pedal point or drone really gives a whole new flavour as opposed to just noodling through the actual notes that comprise the scale. Sometimes, even just learning how to pluck two strings at once (one with your thumb, the other with your finger) in the most basic of fashions really opens up your guitar playing. You can quickly enter that magical world of 'is this just me playing this' as the whole is so much more than the sum of its parts. Pretty soon you are learning to alternate your thumb drone or pedal point and you start to get coordinated. Then you start getting good at it and it can really bust you out of a rut. Any intermediate guitar players out there that feel as if they have hit the wall - if you're a shredder or just a chord thrasher, put down that pick (actually learn to keep it tucked between your fingers and flick back and fore) and just tool around with your thumb hitting the lower bass strings and whatever finger you are comfortable with plucking the higher ones. It's not too difficult to drone or pedal on the D string when playing that jazz/indian scale, and then switch up to the A string and pedal on that. It doesn't have to be just rock/metal pyrotechnics. This video lesson will show you how to get authentic sounding Indian/Sitar like scales going. It's all about the drone baby. Or rather the pedal point!

i shared on Facebook 😊 I request all viewers to share their videos coz they always come with the things which we don't deserve in free. At least we can share to make this channel more and more known to people. A lot of love and respect from Pakistan and thanks for teaching me so many things. I have no teacher but I proudly say I learn guitar from Mike Beatham . I am proud to be viewed of your videos sir😊

+Mehboob Yaqoob Thank you so much! Everyone deserves to learn for free no matter what their background. But there are two main funding sources that make this possible - advertising and donations. And yes sharing with fellow musicians on the socials is always appreciated.

One of the best channel with guitar stuff on YT. Your lessons are f*n great. You could speed up the tempo, sometimes you take too much time to explain simple concept. Anyway, amazing content

I need to work on organising everything and there are many gaps to fill (I'm quite scatter gun with my approach!). I am aware of the need for a logical path through the lessons. Hopefully in the meantime you can take something from each video I upload and keep things varied.

+01kid01 Yep, a good one to study for pedal point. Notice also that when Angus plays it live he doesn't even use his pick hand. It's a good hammer-on/pull-off exercise.

I had heard the pedal point in a lot of songs that I like without knowing that it had a name. When you use a mode scale should you use the chords of that mode? I'm confused about that. I mean, the phrygian dominant, for example, is the parent scale or it's just playing every chord in that mode?
