The song's lyrics are generally misunderstood. On the surface, it's a playful and unserious song about masturbation in prison. But, like any Fela Kuti song, if you know the story behind the song, then it takes on a different more serious meaning. Last year, EFCC, the Nigerian equivalent of FBI, arrested Naira Marley, Zlatan Ibile along with 3 other label mates, aka the "Five Alive" he's referring to in the chorus. Tasked with eradicating corruption, EFCC agents have a reputation for being corrupt themselves. EFCC arrested Naira a day after he released a song titled "Am I a Yahoo Boy?" which openly criticized EFCC and other Nigerian law enforcement agencies. After being released on bail, Marley released Soapy. In it, he's lamenting and satirizing the corrupt state of Nigeria's legal and prison system. As a satirist and critic, Marley is definitely drawing inspiration from Fela, who was himself arrested 200+ times by Nigerian law enforcement agencies for his scathing criticism of Nigeria's corrupt military government in his day. But as a lyricist, Naira is channeling Yoruba juju musician King Sunny Ade, who was famous for his use of traditional Yoruba proverbs and idioms that are multilayered with meaning.

Okay, I delved into the lyrics of SOAPY by Naira Marley. Back when I was teaching at Bamfem, watching my student dance to the song and chew the lyrics got on my nerves, because I had hard time linking the first verse to the Chorus. But then delving into the lyrics, I discovered two things. 1) The song is about Masturbation. But he qualified it by employing the literary device called SATIRE with a wave of SARCASM. 2) The song centred on his experience in the prison. What he saw in the prison; prisoners masturbating etc. Just like Fela, his professed Role Model, Naira Marley sang about his experience bluntly, uncensored. But of course you can't compare the two. After all, BurnaBoy claims to take after Fela's vibe too. Well, only that, we do have different things we take from our mentors. *drops pen* © Zǔ xiān
