I added Gin, Lemon juice, an egg white, simple syrup, and heavy cream together to make a “lemon meringue pie” cocktail. I shook it for a while to get a nice foam for it too… turned my world upside down when I discovered the Ramos Gin Fizz 😂
The Division Bell was one of the first cocktails that really shocked me. Wasn’t like anything I’d had. Such a balance of Smokey, sweet, tart, and slightly bitter. One of my favorites.
“I don’t wanna overdo the dog on the channel” listen anders, you can’t overdo the dog. when freya isn’t on screen, everyone should be asking “where’s freya?”
My husband and I spent some time in Oaxaca this summer touring Mezcal distilleries (small ones like family-owned and run in tiny villages) and tried several different kinds of Mezcal and even some Pechuga. We visited both some clay distilling and coper distilling and were able to get some bottles shipped home. We're making the Division Bell this evening! If you are ever interested in taking a trip to Oaxaca and want to visit small, unique paleques, I know an excellent tour guide! Also, I wonder what happens when you listen to the Division Bell while drinking the Division Bell...is that like watching Wizard of Oz while listening to Dark Side of the Moon??🤔
I once dated a girl who liked Vodka martinis, and I MUCH prefer gin. So I made a couple that were half-vodka and half-gin. I jokingly called it "The Hermaphrodite.". I later learned it was called a "Vesper.". True story.
I love mezcal cocktails. One of my favorites plays a bit with the same ingredients. Its called candelarian i think from a bartender in berlin. 3cl mezcal, 2cl dutch (white) cacao, 2 cl aperol, 2,5 cl lemon juice and then topped with 1 cl soda water. Its kinda my go to drink in summer.
So... I made the Division Bell with Campari (because I didn't have Aperol). OMG! I always thought a cocktail could have _either_ grapefruit for Campari, but in this one, the grapefruit _and_ Campari is DIVINE! And then the smokey evolution just builds on that foundation like a famous architect. Bravo, Anders.
Great video! While you do an incredible job as a bartender and entertainer, adding Az to the mix made it even more fun. Now, adding your puppy created an even better garnish to the mix! (see what I did there?)
Hey Anders, love your videos and your presentation! Thank you! I've seen this thing on a golf RU-vid Chanel (Swing Quest) where he always puts all the info on the screen in the end and encourages his viewers to take a screenshot. I thought maybe this is something you could do with the recipes for your drinks. Just put them up in the end, we can quickly take a screenshot and build a library of recipe-screenshots over time to go back to 🙂
I'm a fan of just about every Last Word riff I've had, though mezcal is one of those base spirits I rarely turn to (personal taste). That said, I've made and thoroughly enjoyed the Naked & Famous before and I'm looking forward to giving The Division Bell a try (especially since I'm a devoted Pink Floyd fan). Cheers!
I love both , but the Divison Bell edges it for me , I’ve started to make it with a Royal shake with a grapefruit peel added in the shaker, I find it gives it an extra bit of yum.
Me: Watches new Anders video...immediately makes trip to Total Wine. I've been looking for a reason to buy mezcal! The Division Bell clinches it. I have all the other bottles. Amazing album and a fantastic sounding coctail.
And what if you love the naked and famous but chartreuse is hard to find and mezcal had finished so you made this two drinks with tequila? Did I create two new cocktails?
As always... I really like this channel... very well done and please do not stop... and always have Az aside... and the doggo from time to time... that makes the little difference to other cocktail channels... and... great cocktails, by the way... of course.
Another Phil Ward original! See - that guy's everywhere! 1.5 oz Reposado Tequila .5 oz Mezcal Barspoon Agave Nectar 2 dashes Angostura bitters - I think his recipe calls for an orange twist, but I like this one with grapefruit (so good with the mezcal!). If I'm in a "smokey" mood, I'll make it an even split of tequila & mezcal - and I've been known to add an extra dash or two of Ango 🤫
Hey anders, love your content! We have a bottle of limoncello in the fridge that we just can't drink...can you do a video on some delicious cocktails that are incorporate this alcohol? I feel like it doesn't get enough attention and rarely see anything about it. Thanks!
I'm obsessed with the Division Bell. I bought this mezcal out of curiosity. It hasn't been my flavor profile in the past, but I'm always looking to expand my horizons. I decided to try the Division Bell before the Naked & Famous because I didn't want to invest in Yellow Chartreuse all willy-nilly. (I guard my Green Chartreuse like a junkyard dog, only pulling it out to make The Last Words for people who will appreciate such a thing.) So, I made the The Division Bell, and it was an eye opener and an eye closer (I only have eyes for you, Division Bell!). My wife loves the Pegu Club, so I mix that for her. Then I make myself a Division Bell. They look remarkably similar in the glass, so to onlookers (our neighbor Dave), we look like we're on the same journey. But I have a delicious, smokey-sweet, complex and balanced elixir in my glass, and I'm grinning smugly like I've uncovered a secret. My wife has no interest in sharing in this secret, so more for me. I'm my own man, in this specific situation. Thanks for introducing this to me!
Hi Anders, your video arrived at the perfect time. I’ve been thinking about creating my own cocktail since you did the Final Ward and this video has inspired me to make my own riff on the Last Word. I call it the Last Nail a mash up of a Rusty Nail and a Last Word. It is equal parts, ¾ oz each, blended scotch (I used Isaly Mist 8 year), Drambuie, Luxardo Maraschino, and lemon juice. No garnish. I am curious to see if you or anyone in the comments has seen this riff or something similar. Also, if anyone tries it, I would be interested to hear what they think. Thanks again for all the great content.
This was great. The best Anders video in ages. I always slice my lemons that way! Good to see an Oz (spelling...) cameo appearance again. Don't worry about overdoing the dog... love the dog. Can't wait to make the drinks. By the way, I believe that Sam at Attaboy NY created the Paper Plane as a rif on the Last Word, and the Naked & Famous was created by Simo as a play on the Paper Plane. Just wanted to get that plug for the Paper Plane in there - although you've already done the Paper Plane!
I love your diagram explaining the connection of each of these drinks to the Last Word! (Could one include the Maximiliano Affair in this "family"? It seems to have a similar pedigree.) I came across this video while trying to decide which of them to make tonight... although I make my Naked and Famous with Strega since yellow Chartreuse is *impossible* to find right now. I think I'll be going with the Division Bell tonight, although a side-by-side flavor comparison would be a lot of fun - but not on a "school night." I am a big fan of Banhez mezcal, it has that sweet smokiness which I like. Side note: I used the Division Bell ratios for my own (?) riff on the Last Word, with Laird's straight apple brandy, Strega, Ramazzotti (I broke down and bought a bottle...), and lemon juice.
If you can get hold of a bottle of Davo Plum (an Australian davidson plum aperitif), try my naked and famous riff - La Lorena. Mezcal, Davo Plum, Yellow Chartruese and lime in equal parts, plus a Maraschino Cherry in the glass. I prefer a Cenizo mezcal, Burrito Fiestero is best, but Derrumbes Cenizo also works.
…and they are a downstream riffs on an Aviation. Reality…there are a few cocktail families, that with a twist and turn generate almost all recipes. These two are modern classics. Last Word, Paper Plane, Naked and Famous etc. also in there. Genius is in the details and choices. General principle, if you are having a brilliant idea, chances someone else has already had it. No shame in spontaneous creation or riffing on someone else’s work. Recipes can’t be copyrighted. Personally, I’m always pleasantly surprised when I unintentionally ape something. I dig the channel because it expands my repertoire. I lost my drinking privileges a few years ago, and can only research like this. 😉 Absolutely, keep giving credit where due, and talk about lineage. It’s what makes this channel fascinating 😊
Definitely giving these a go as the final ward is one of my all time favourites, also fyi… love your dog and we love seeing him on the channel so keep doing it x love ya and cheers
Had the pleasure of trying the Naked and Famous at a bar nearby and it's become one of my all-time favorites. Though I prefer it slightly to the Division Bell, the Division Bell is still more than enough to hold me over until I find a bottle of that elusive yellow chartreuse. Think I'm gonna make one tonight
Hello Anders, love your videos. One of my favorite cocktails for the winter is a White Russian. I would like to see how “YOU” would make it. Keep up the great work. 😁👍🏼
The very first drink I thought to make myself (before I really got into looking up cocktail recipes) was an Irish Whiskey Sour with lemon and honey syrup; then I came across the Gold Rush.
I can't get the Vida mezcal in Ireland, would you know anything about The Lost Explorer mezcal, its at a similar price point to the Vida. ps love the videos Anders
Hi Anders!, I'm new to your channel and been loving it! I've already made a few cocktails and they are amazing. Do you have any cocktails Licor 43 or can you recommend any? Thanks
Love me a last word riff, particularly those made with rum. I'm definitely going to give this a go. Great video. I thought I made a cocktail myself once...turns out, negroni variations and last word variations have ALL been made before. I made a bianco negroni one night using luxardo bitter bianco, which had been on sale at total wine so I figured- "Why not give it a try?!"(excellent bitter liqueur btw, highly recommend to anyone reading this comment). As well as some London dry style gin(I used Dripping springs traditional, but I've used several since) and Martini and Rossi Bianco, which I love to drink on ice as an aperitivo, all in equal parts and garnished with an orange twist. Turns out, I was hardly the first person to do this. But I'll be damned if it isn't still one of my favorite cocktails to this day.
loved the intro to this video! Unfortunate that you're cocktail was so similar to the Division Bell but that's just an indication that you stumbled upon something great. At least that's what I tell myself when I find that my idea was not nearly as original than I thought. Love your channel!
I’ve recently converted my non-tequila drinking wife into a mezcal fan so these recipes are perfect. Can you generally sub green for yellow Chartreuse (I only have green)?
You're not kidding about chartreuse--I haven't been able to find it anywhere. My local liquor store (which has everything) says they haven't been able to get it for over a year.
Come on Anders - knives? I don't think we need to be supporting companies that sell weapons. Not like you. Let's think a little more carefully about that kind of promotion.
Was glad to find your channel, and then you added the cute puppy! Is Fraya a German Shepard and lab mix? I ask cause she looks like she could be the baby sister of my shepador boy, Becket!
Hi Anders! I found your RU-vid channel less than a year ago and I became an instant fan.. I've watched most of your videos, some of them several times, and you've been a great help while I take my firsts few steps into bartending, thanks for everything! You probably go thru a lot of messages, requests and suggestions, but hopefully this is a new one or a good one.. Last night I was working at the bar (in Vancouver, BC) and a customer asked if we had Malort, I instantly felt confused and ignorant, so I asked other bartenders only to get the same reaction from them. So I went back and apologized to the customer and he replied: "don't worry, it must be an American thing", which brought me to Google and eventually found out it's not only an American thing but a Chicago thing specifically. So all this story brings me to this question: How come you haven't done a video about Malort?
It's a "Bäsk" (Swedish word meaning "bitter" used to describe any bitter schnaps made with wormwood) The "Malört" in the name just means wormwood. So you can probably try with e.g. Absinthe if you can't get a Bäsk. (the letter "ä" is pronounced like the "e" in mezcal and "ö" is pronounced like the "i" in "bird")
So I was in a great bar in San Diego last week. I ordered a Naked and Famous. He walked around and came back and said that they were out of Yellow Chartreuse. I saw that they had Green Chartreuse. I told him to make it with the Green instead. OMG, I think I like it better. A little less sweet, a little more herbal. You should try it. Let us know what you think.
I have far more guests order a Naked and Famous these days than Last Words. Not sure if this is just where I tend bar or it's generally true throughout the U.S. Would be interesting to hear what other bartenders have experienced.
The Division Bell looks to me a Floydy Pink... Had no yellow chartreuse so I did Ding Dong Bell I oz 30 ml Mezcal Recuerdo 3/4 oz 22.5 ml Aperol 1/4 oz 7.1 ml Green Chartreuse 1/4 oz 7.1 ml Cherry Brandy Liqueur De Kuyper 3/4 oz 22.5 ml Fresh Lime Juice I'm OK with this...
Division bell is probably the only cocktail from the barfly channel that I actually made back in the days. And fell in love immediately. Gotta try the other one and see if it's better or not
Love the channel Anders! My wife is pregnant at the moment so I’m having to come up with non alcoholic cocktails for Friday nights to go with my alcoholic cocktails. Would love for you to do a top 5 non alcoholic cocktails.
Hi steven I'm a bartender & here's my favorite mocktail recipe! 0.5 oz lime juice 0.5 oz pineapple juice 0.5 oz pomegranate juice 0.5 oz orgeat (almond syrup) Shake with ice and dirty dump (pour entire contents, including ice) over 2 oz of tonic in glass. Hope you enjoy!
Thank you for posting this because I have been feeling very similar. 3/4 mezcal 3/4 aperol 3/4 amaro Montenegro 3/4 lime I’ve been calling it “Flight to Oaxaca” based off of the paper plane, but I am sure it has a different name. Any thoughts? Ps grapefruit oil would be nice on this. Gonna try that
Hi Anders, discovered your channel about a month ago and I've fallen in love with it. As an Irishman my favourite drink is a Jameson, ginger ale and lime. Just wondering if you could make a cocktail using these flavours as inspiration.
