Nalgene canteen is god tier. USGI canteen always made the water taste like crap. Nalgene never had that problem. The plastic on Nalgene is pretty good, a nice combo of durability and flexibility. Plus you can see into them which is nice. I'd take a Nalgene over the USGI canteen any day.
My standard nalgene bottle fell off the back of my motorcycle half full at highway speed. Received a few character scratches only, love it !! ( but i certainly tied it down better the rest of the trip )
Getting a Nalgene. I have never been able to get the plastic taste out of my GI canteen. I've tried the rinse and repeat thing as well as putting a mix of baking soda and water in it and rinsing it thoroughly. That plastic taste makes me wonder what I'm drinking. Maybe over cautious but I don't want to get sick when I'm trying to enjoy the outdoors.
Scott Hill the constant taste of plastic from a usgi canteen is due to the bpa. In small amounts it tastes bad, in large amounts it poisons you. Once plastic has bpa as an ingredient it can't be taken out.
I think that you may have a belgian aliuminium canteen cup. I had the same problem and did some reading. I found that there are a lot of belgian m1910 style cups that are often sold as american.
If I have not get it wrong, the aluminum canteen cup is for WWII/ Korean War era aluminum/ steel(?) canteen, the shape of canteen is a bit different from that of ALICE canteen.
The USGI canteens- little bit of bleach and warm water, shake it up, let it sit for 3-5 minutes, rinse really well with warm water (unil the smell is gone), and bam.
I love my regular Nalgene bottles so much that I’ve bought three. Everybody else loves them so much they keep steeling mine. Maybe I’ll get the canteen next time I gotta replace one.
The Nalgene canteen is the way to go if you like water to taste like water. G.I. plastic canteen water tastes & smells like you are drinking out of an old rubber boot. ☣
The Nalgene Oasis is too expensive at $16. They used to be like $8 a year ago. First they disappeared for 2 years, they said it was supply chain issues. Now they restock them at twice the price. Sounds like a little market manipulation....sad. Anyway, for slightly over what they a charging now you could get a pretty nice brand name stainless steel bottle.
ppspsd most people are aware of that the rolled edge cups are meant to be used not with metal canteens they don’t fit the later steel ones they only fit the aluminum ones from the world wars and Korea
The same machine pressed those cups back in America are now pressing those cups in China they didn't have the plastic canteens when we were pressing and we were pressed them for metal canteens but thanks to NAFTA and Bush senior and all of our politicians now China makes the same cup for about a quarter of $100 bill you can own one
They are back in production. Nalgene stopped making them during Covid to use the production line to make lab kits for Covid testing. But I assure everybody that they're back...
They may not fit the aluminum by design. Nalgene already took the bpa in the plastic out of the equation to minimize poisoning, boiling water in aluminum can give you aluminum poisoning which is not fun by any means
