NAM (also known as Napalm in selected markets) was a commercial Build engine first person shooter set during the Vietnam War and designed by the TNT Team (Reactor4), creators of the Platoon total conversion for Duke Nukem 3D, picked up by Infogrames and put them to work remaking Platoon with more professional art and some custom source code modifications by Matt Saettler, who is the originator of the EDuke project. U.S. Marine Sergeant Dan Snyder, who helped pioneer computer simulation training for American troops with a Doom army mod, was a consultant on the project. A sequel was released the following year in 1999 called, World War II GI.
World War II GI was a first-person shooter set during the events of World War II released in 1999 as a direct sequel the previous year's game NAM. The player takes control of 101st Airborne Division G.I. ("galvanized iron", referring to a soldier in the US military) Corporal Gerardi, sent in to wipe out scores of Wehrmacht and SS soldiers.
The game sets the player in the middle of World War II scenarios such as the D-Day beach landings during the invasion of Normandy, assaults on equipment and supply depots, and other scenarios. The game was built on the Build engine, with 3D environments and 2D character sprites. It shared similar game play elements to its prequel, created by the same developers

"Half the time you're killed by something you don't even see, and survival just comes down to luck. It's dark and it's hard to see the enemy." Throw in bad food and lack of sleep and confusing orders and you got yourself a pretty realistic military simulator there.

The problem being these mechanics conflict with the engine’s quirks (the build engine was designed for run-n-gun shooters, like Duke Nukem and Blood) If you want a good Nam simulation, check out Vietcong from 2003.
@kkarx
@kkarx 3 года назад
@@Skiivin Vietcong is even worse in this. I played recently both and contrary to what gman says - in Nam you can spot enemy quite easily, in Vietcong it is harder. In Nam you just need to 1.) walk and look around. Never run. 2.) adjust your gamma so you can see even in night mission. You can outspot most enemies when you adjust gamma. 3.) Learn few things about the game. When you hear aircrafts you need to get into some ditch or go back asap. Mines are usually avoidable if you play it super carefully, booby traps suck. Do that and you can finish many missions without dying. At first I thought the game looked awful and was pretty bad but eventually I was surprised how intense it might be and it is fun. The sound design is brilliant. The shooting in Nam and GI feels like Wolfenstein in build engine which is great.
@Skiivin
@Skiivin 3 года назад
@@kkarx yeah but Vietcong is designed around being a slow-paced pseudo-simulator
@kkarx

@@Skiivin It is funny. The first time I had more fun with Vietcong and Nam sucked. Now I think Nam is more fun. You know what I totally hated when playing Vietcong? Your first shot hits just arm in 90% cases. It is so annoying.

I remember playing a game called "Black Ops" which was set in Vietnam, that was released sometime around 2000. Can't find it online anymore due to a certain behemoth franchise using the same name for a couple of their games, the first of which is set in Vietnam.

Wow, I actually have a copy of Vietnam 2. The game was awful but I think my father and I finished that 3 times each since we didn't have any other good games at the time! The enemies would repeat the same things over and over and the protagonist voice actor had a stereotypical dramatic american voice.

Nam was a very great game at the time and the realistic approach was quite unique after demons and aliens. I still remember the first enemies who appeared to be dead just to wake up and shoot me point blank, or the traps, until you cut the wire. Even the stage with no enemies, only friendly units hiding out the war. Also the mulptipalyer was very popular in may neighborhood. We played it many many hours and I remember it the first game at the time which had multiplayer only stages designed just for that. Good times.

+Gggmanlives C'mon dude, These games are not nearly as difficult as you are describing them. I must say I am pleased that you even bothered to review these two classics, as most reviewers have skipped over them. You successfully pointed out many of the good and bad points of these games. But the difficulty? I think what we have here is just a simple misunderstanding about how they were designed. In all the footage you seem to be running and gunning as if you were playing Duke Nukem, but NAM is much more of a creep and shoot game. Not quite a stealth game, but definitely NOT a "run full speed through the jungle" game. There are MANY trip-wires in NAM and with the games frame-rate I am not even sure if the engine has time to render them if you don't stop every few steps to take a quick look around --- you will just suddenly get blown up. There's also landmines, claymore mines, punji traps, and incoming artillery and air-strikes - which always have a brief warning sound to let you know to take cover -- FAST! I suspect that in your haste, you may have been falling victim to many of these difficult to see (or hear) dangers. There are a few open areas in NAM where you can charge in with guns blazing (and a few areas where you MUST do this) but mostly, NAM was more of a slower-paced game where you creep through the jungle, mostly at night, terrified of what is behind every tree or bush. In this aspect I still think NAM succeeded more than ANY other Vietnam game made to date. WWII GI was pretty weak overall, and I doubt I will ever play it again and I agree 100% with your non-recommend. But NAM had that special something, with the crawling through a dark jungle, the ambient sounds, the painfully realistic damage, it really is a game that I can drag out every few years and still enjoy. If a modern shooter could recapture that sense of fear and the dark jungle environment as well as NAM did, then it would surely be heralded as one of the greatest war games ever. Well, there's my 2-cents worth. Keep up the good work -- even on the rare occasion where I don't agree with you, I still like seeing your reviews.

I remember these were the first FPS games when I was 11. The family PC for some reason wasn't able to run sound on either game and I played the entire game in complete silence. Definitely didn't remember each level being able to be beat that quick, I think I was moving slowly around the map exploring secret areas.

I remember when this game came out I was so blown away by the graphics I couldn't believe how realistic people looked, and the environment. At the time it was almost like looking at a real person it seemed like. I was so blown away I later needed therapy because I thought the game was real. Resident evil 2 "1998" also gave me this effect. By the age of 13 I finally snapped out of it when later titles came out, and it became a regular thing. now look how far we have come.. photo realistic ...wow. People born after the 90s won't understand what I'm talking about....you must understand within a year we went from pixles to full 3D, it was a amazing time to be growing up. When a change like this happens over night it can be very hard to absorb.

@@slodekslod9337 Yeah "Blown away by the graphics"???!!! Nam was released in '98 and WW2GI in'99, Duke Nukem 3d was '96 and it looks WAY better than this crap( and these games steal a lot from DN3d, the sounds, the props, the hands of Duke with horrible rendering of other weapons on top), not to mention...you know...Half Life was released in '98! And if you want a military game Medal Of Honor came out only 3 months after WWGI...C'mon!!!
@CruxisFire
@CruxisFire 9 лет назад
I remember picking up NAM when it came out in 98 as a "Why not" sort of purchase. Surprisingly, it got a lot of mileage from me, my brother, and some friends until Christmas that year when Ocarina of Time, Starcraft, and Rogue Squadron popped in our laps. It wasn't a horrible game, and I knew then it was just a Duke clone, but I had fun screwing around with it, Then there was trying to go online on that confusing-ass TEN network, or whatever it was called that Duke3D was using. I still oddly whistle the theme song now and then. I think to me it's more of a nostalgia thing. I remember playing this on that old computer on many dark nights with VHS recorded South Park season 1 and 2 reruns in the background. I may grab it on steam for old times sake, even though it didn't age well, but thanks for the look back in time.
@dosnostalgic
@dosnostalgic 9 лет назад
I don't know why many people consider NAM to be one of the worst DOS shooters, that's hardly the case. I'd also recommend the original Platoon total conversion for Duke3D. NAM is essentially a more developed version of that. NAM is now available legally on Steam. WWII GI is garbage. Higher difficulty, less balance, insane system requirements for a Build game and a meter that affects your aim? Fuck that.

the hit scanny nightmare and the enemies blending into the environment was good at making you feel a bit more like its FECKIN NAM MATE but the ANZAC legends didn't mention that that also made the game a bit of a quicksavin' slog. I liked it though.

Because enemies that magically teleport behind you and invisible insta-kill mines (that you only know exist once you've already died to them) is bad. It's easy to make a hard game, it's hard to make a challenging, fun game. Doom and Duke are fun and challenging, NAM punishes you for having the audacity to paly it.

I believe it is Eduke32 that is making the game(s) difficult. I played NAM often in my childhood and teen years, just using the keyboard, and it was definitely possible to get through levels without dying. I lost the ability to play it when I upgraded to Windows 7 (and I can't figure out how to run NAM in DOSBox). I found out about Eduke32 yesterday, and I was finally able to play NAM again after nearly a decade. I am getting utterly wrecked many times per level on the easiest difficulty. I swear to you the game was not originally like this. The enemy AI did not have pinpoint accuracy that would cause nearly instant death.

The main thing I noticed with using EDuke32 is that the M16 behaved like Duke's pistol which is very inaccurate, while the vanilla NAM M16 has pinpoint accuracy which makes the game much easier.

I have to say both games look really bad but they are fun to play if you get a grip. Then it is really fun and intense. 1.) Don't run, walk. 2) Look around yourself. It is mostly a corridor game. Check both sides b4 you move on. 2.) If you hear a plane run back or jump into some ditch if there is any nearby. Planes usually mean there will be an air strike. 3.) In jungle use mostly trails, you will avoid many mines 4.) If you hear shooting and cant see anyone, hide behind a tree and keep spamming. There is always a lot of ammo everywhere. 5.) Using autoaim will help you kill enemy you can't see. It makes the game much easier. 6.) And the most importantly adjust you gamma so you can see enemy at distance. You can even often outspot them.

04:30 You said "half the time i get blown up or killed by something i cant even see" only 3 seconds in your footage befor on 04:20 you died by stepping onto a mine. You can see it laying, and if you missed it while playing you can hear the "click" sound. You can then dismantle the mine by pressing space, dont move. I played NAM alot when i was around 11 years old, the best was multiplayer against my friends and brothers. We would connect 6 pcs in a network and duke it out!

Do you wanna play a bad Vietnam War themed game? Try Shellshock 2: Blood Trails. Have fun mate.

There is a whole mission that mimics that ''predator'' movie.

Part of the reason why the sound effects are good is because a lot of them were ripped from the movie Platoon.

6:45 at first I thought the game had a crude ADS feature lol. Why would they randomly use the "Doom" style weapon position so inconsistently?

Speaking of dying in a few hits, why haven't you reviewed the Stalker games yet?
@Gggmanlives

They're hard games to review. I'm probably going to do all 3 in one video and that's a lot of content to get done. It's definitely happening, just not in the near future.

Gggmanlives Hell ya! If anything the atmosphere in that game is unsurpassed.

The funniest thing is when there's an air-raid and they drop a big bomb right where you are, and then it doesn't matter how high is the level of your health, you most certainly die at that very spot! ha ha ha ha ha... I experienced this a few times during this game!

Does anyone know what the game is in the first clip of the intro? It’s the girl in a bathing suit and she is standing in the water with her back to the camera. I need to know what this game is! Will someone please help?

I remembering buying Nam after I'd played the Medal of Honor series and I wanted another war shooter. I turned it off after about five minutes.

Hey GGGman. Would you say NAM might be the first realistic shooter or does the original Rainbow Six game still holds that quote?
@Gggmanlives

***** NAM isn't all that realistic, I think Rainbow Six wins by a land slide.

So Gggmanlives when are you gonna start doing these reviews at 60fps? I think the majority of games you review would greatly benefit from it.
@Gggmanlives
@Gggmanlives 9 лет назад
***** I don't have any real intention to start yet to be honest. Most footage dips under 60fps anyway especially with more modern games, so it's hardly goingto be consistent.

Pretty much every gripe you have with the gameplay in Nam is the same as what real soldiers had in the actual war. I think the game captures just how vulnerable and useless you are in the jungles on your own.

What about ye olde "Conflict: Vietnam"? I didn't even find that one to be half bad, but that might be because I remember the conflict series being on the news for its violence back then and how bad it was for kids. Needless to say, when I was able to get my hands on a game in the series I loved it just because how naughty and grown up I felt playing it because it would have shocked my parents. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict:_Vietnam
