How bizarre. I was thinking to myself "I don't remember Ian saying anything about putting the sump plug back in after draining the oil". That's exactly the kind of thing I'd do. It's a very endearing little beastie
Welcome Desmond to the Hubnut fleet! Forgetting to replace the sump plug was a not quite regular error in my day but I am guilty of this... along with coolant drain plug on occasion. Great work HubNutters, oil all filter done.
Don’t feel bad Ian. I’ve got 4 decades of oil changes under my belt and I performed my first “pour some fresh oil straight through the engine” last year. I guess it happens to us all.
Unpopular opinion but that Kanari is a wee tad more practical than Chemmy imo. More boxy a bit bigger & taller = more space to throw stuff into....heck it looks on par with an Ignis/Wagon R in terms of interior space. If i only lived in the UK id give it a good home for a "dumpit"
First to the post! Oil changes never go to plan with vehicles new to you. One never knows how well or how often they've been done prior to your ownership
I did that a couple of years ago for the first and onlt time in 40 years but was not fortunate enough to have a catch can still underneath.. Doh is the expression that springs to mind......
I think the Perodua is an excellent little car and an absolute bargain considering what you paid for it. I do hope Miss Hubnut warms to him over time as I’d like to see it stay on the fleet. Good luck ! 😁
The story about the Yaris wheel bearing has made me think. I wish there was a simple and reliable online facility to find out about alternative fitments like that. Of course it’s not even guaranteed that ordering a part from the actual manufacturer will result in the right part, so I guess I can just keep wishing.
I thought I could see a John child sticker in the back window I live down the road from that garage he sold loads of them it’s amazing how far cars travel around
I think Desmond is a top name for a car! And she is the first female Desmond I’ve ever, err, ‘met’ (virtually).I do look forward to seeing her in a pork-pie hat. She can borrow mine any time 😀
Cool car. Glad you explained the number plate position. Tbh, If I owned the car, I’d move it more centrally, don’t think it will affect cooling at all, it’s not a high performance engine etc 😊
So you missed out option 3 for the oil filter, which was that I changed the oil, and the oil filter when I bought it about a year ago, and replaced the (non original) filter with a new/old stock filter I found in a Reliant spare parts dealer... My strong suspicion is that the phrase new/old stock may have been a euphemism for old/old stock. Also, the oil filler cap has always stuck - you will notice the cap has a little hole in the end of the ridge on the top, which is perfect for inserting a screwdriver for extra leverage.
Doesn't "new old stock" simply mean "ancient but unused in never-opened original packaging"? I guess you'd have noticed if he'd sold you a used oil filter 😅
I was talking to a retired computer salesman this morning. He said that the reason why the old Vectra B was always dominating the motorways and A-roads at 110mph, isn't so much because they were refined and powerful, but it was REALLY because they were so uncomfortable that drivers just couldn't wait to get out of them!
I did exactly that servicing the Skoda on the drive & having to stop to sort out a stroppy 3 year old. Poured 4.5 litres of Castrol through the engine into the not quite big enough drain tray, luckily has some sand to clean up with 🙄 Easily done! I was guessing at Ken for the name, I feel I was close 😂
At least you spotted the sump plug (it's fairly obvious!) ... How about leaving the filler cap off - if you're lucky the engine will coat the inside of the bonnet with rust reducer ...
Mannol engine oil. Nice one! I use it in my Toyota and both my motorbikes. Love the stuff. Until now I didn't know of anyone else who uses it. Anyone else out there using Mannol?
Please consider using an oil sludge removal additive in Desmond, as those EJ engines are notorious for drinking oil (Esp when they may be on their first oil filter). I'm trying to save my GF's EJ Cuore engine which is fine in every way, except it's addiction to oil!
Sweet little car, this is why I love this channel, a respite from the usual moronic golf r/b58/amg nonsense I see! The wheel bearing problem reminds me of a peugeot 305 I had, couldn't find front top mounts for love nor money, tried ones from 205, 309 etc, no use... With modern stuff like autodoc parts cross ref etc I could have sorted it no problem. Sending a couple of litres through the sump to flush it never hurt hehe
I dunno, spending so much time bickering over who has the better car, and you go and leave the sump plug out, but, for an external judgement, Elly's the best, because she's a 2CV... :P

You omitted the possibility that it was serviced at the dealership for most of it's life. I find that plausible since it seems to be quite the chore finding parts for these cars.
@@HubNut Yeah. I would suspect it has been quite well cared for considering how often it has been resold by the dealer. Scrapping it for a bad wheel earing seems like an anomaly. It's pretty astonishing how often people who buy these "bottom of the barrel brand" cars teake incredibly good care of them when it comes to servicing. Probably if you are looking for cars in the scrapyard a perudua is a much better bet than an skoda for example since then 2nd hand values probably make quite alot of repairs unviable quicker than what is fair.
Everything i can find shows Kenari (all model years) has 55bhp which is less than the 63bhp for the charade. And 55bhp is the amount the EJDE engine produces. The torque is very similar (90 v 88nM). The power and torque are both produced at higher reva with the VE (6000 v 5200rpm and 3600 v 3200rpm repectably.
Might be difference between export spec and local spec with the vvt gubbins, Malaysian specification car tend to get crappier specification back then vs export market. also, Malaysian numberplate is the same size as the UK one (former colony after all), usually its just a crappy plastic glue-on plate number (no mount needed)
Ian, there is nothing in the constructions and use regulations or MOT regulations that state's the number plate has be in the centre, the number plate just needs to meet the current regulations stated in the manual, must be readable at 20.5 metres and must be secure. It must not however be put in the windscreen like a lot of modified car people do.
At least forgetting the plug may have flushed some crud out. Did you remember to check the level after starting? Number plates can be mounted off center but must be towards the offside. Some Alfa's have to and Land Rovers.
@HubNut now I've watched all the way through I'm now questioning whether it was a ve, same bulkhead ej-dv stamp, but the coure engine didn't have the sensor fitting on top, just a blank.
Point of complete trivia -- most Canadian provinces gave up on front licence plates decades ago, and they were never sized for short-sighted policemen in the first place. British number plates suck big time -- ridiculously big things in my opinion. So you could call the Kenari "Lew" for short after Desmond Llewelyn, that actor who played Q in the James Bond flicks. He was always modding cars. I like terms at least twice removed and disguised for plausible deniability. My father called my mother Eggs as a term of affection, short for Peggy, which is somehow short for Margaret, itself also otherwise shortened as Meg, Maggie, Marge, Margie etc ad infinitum. Lew Kenari -- tough little guy "Yeah, that's me! Wanna make sump'n of it, pal?!" whose real name is Desmond which is of course of Irish origin, thus being for the most part not giving away a Malaysian connection.
Always buy 20 ltr manoil 5.30 for my fiesta when on offer.always change oil at about 5000 miles and never have a problem.left my sump plug off once and made a mess.happens to use all.😂😂
Drag Race. Two runs. First run; drive own car, Second run; drive partners car. Compare. Ooh, loser gets to buy the winner (and themselves) a nice cream tea, tea and cake, kebab, or what have you. ;)
@@chrispop99 The best one is when they forget to nip it up so that the sump plug falls out after a few feet and paints the whole parking lot outside the dealership.
Been there, done that. It's almost a rite of passage. Everyone will do it once, Mine was on a customer's car last year, as a mechanic in training. And I had already removed the catchcan. end result? 4.1 liter of 5W-30 on the shop floor. It was a 2008 Ford Focus Wagon.
Any possibility that it's had an engine change or from another RHD country likes of ROI or South Africa? I had a Ford Sierra Sapphire badged as a GL model but an ROI spec and very different kit to UK one.
