My home is called Bluehouse because blue is my favorite color . My husband told me he would build me a blue house & give me a pink baby if I married him. He built my house in l976 & that pink baby Dana was born in 1977. My husband died 20 yrs. ago. I could not change the color of this house even if I wanted to. It is him.

Loved this one! Five years ago we bought an 1848 home which was originally built as a Vicorian. In the 1960's new owners stripped it to mimic a colonial . I love this home and the tranquility it gives me. I've toyed with the idea of naming since I moved here. I felt it deserved it. The interior has remained pretty close to the original floorplan, and the outside brick half walls kept. "Brickside?"

We bought a home in Michigan about 7 years ago. It was supposed to be our “transition into retirement home.” That was the original plan, but It’s now become a summer home where we travel to escape the intense heat in the southwest! . I love this adorable little farmhouse 15 blocks from the bay. It was built in 1896 and when I bought it there was a big star on the side of the house that we kept. I didn’t know it tugged at my heart until one day I called it “my little Star house on the corner!” Since we are usually there over the 4th of July, I was inspired to decorate with a vintage patriotic theme using the “Star” as my inspiration. The name has morphed into “My Star House!” I never really thought about naming a home much, but I love the idea that it really gives even more charm and character to our endeared dwelling space!! I’m thinking I want to get a sign made now!!! TFS, Linda!! 👏🏻🙌👍

We named our property of 7.5 acres in rural Maine, STONEROW FARM. It is bordered on the west by 1K feet of stonewall which meanders through the woods and merges with another perpendicular stonewall. This intersection is heavily laden with stones to prevent a washout of the two stonewalls from naturally draining water runoff in spring or the wet season, About 200 feet along the stonewall (marking our driveway) is a gap that a local historian said was used as a travel way in winter when the main road was blocked by heavy snow.

Linda, We have always named our properties. One of our homes was called "The Grey Ghost". It was a frontier-style home built in the 1880's. It was grey in color and being a frontier-style home it looked old! Our current home's name is "The Greenleaf Cottage". It is a small Cape Cod home with free and natural gardens, we are naturalists, and it is also the name of the street we live on. Our tradition of naming our homes came through my husband's family line. At Christmas time or gift giving there is never a name just "Love, From The Greenleaf Cottage" Loved your floral designs!!

Hi Linda. Loved your video! My husband & I just returned from Connecticut after going on a garden tour of Mar Jennings home named Rosebrook Gardens. Ruth McKeaney, often seen on Homeworthy episodes, named her home Hillside Farms. We were so inspired by them to name our own home, that we decided on Corner Cottage since it is so quaint & is situated on the corner of our cul de sac. We installed a plaque on the front of the house & I plan to have cocktail napkins & paper hand towels for our powder bath made & inscribed with the name as well. Thank you for dedicating an episode on this long ignored tradition. It makes you fall a little more in love with your home when you honor it in this way. Blessings to you!! ❤

First, the flower arrangements you made were just lovely. I am going to have to really think about what name suits my home. It is a 1941 cape in CT, which we added a front porch to. I am surrounded by oak trees. I think it may involve hydrangea in the name, because I have many bushes and hydrangea trees planted around the home over the last 30 years. I would call my style of decorating "cottage" and I have been told by guests that my home is cozy and reminds them of a B and B. I will let you know what I come up with! Have a great week! 💗

Upon retirement, I lived in my camper for 3 years. When I told my friend I had the bunkroom made into a sewing room, she named her Betsy (Ross). I needed a pickup to haul Betsy and ordered a Jeep Gladiator when they first became available. My daughter named her Gladys. Last year I bought a house in my new town/state. As I watched today, I realized if everyone else is named, my house deserves a name. My house was built in a basic neighborhood in 2007. Nothing historic, no creek running through the backyard. When you mentioned that location could be an option I realized that was it. My house is located directly across from the end of the street, thus, "Our House in the Middle of the Street" came to mind. That seems long, so I decided the group that sang the song would be perfect. A quick Google showed the name of that group is "Madness." Linda, I think I need to work on the name some more.

This is a third generation property, first my Grandparents built the original house in 1948, then my mother added a second floor and boathouse in the '80's and now my husband and l completely renovated the property five years ago. But regardless on who or what year it was throughout the decade's,it has always been called The Lake House . 😊

When we bought our small house on four acres, we quickly named it Creekside Cottage. It’s a little creek but we’ve all loved this sweet house. It’s a bit bigger now with an addition for my parents, but the cottage charm was added over the years, with picket fencing, a cutting garden, and a lamppost.

In 1983, my husband and I bought 20 acres in the northern part of Washington state. The next year we started building an “A” frame cabin. My parents drove up to see the beginning of the foundation. Unfortunately, my Dad died the next year, so he never got to see our beautiful cabin. But my Mom did. We named it “Shadow Mountain,” because we have a shale mountain behind the cabin. We named our main home, “Shadow Mountain South.” We are in our early 80’s and still enjoy our little cabin. Have such fond memories of having a peaceful place to relax !

The Pear Cottage, Liphart Lake Cottage, Flying Dragon Cottage? When fall comes we get 400 pounds of pears from one tree and the other one is a new tree. We get several large bowls of sour oranges from the rootstock used with all citrus in the USA, Flying Dragon, and Liphart Lake because Bob's name is Liphart and our yard in front of the sidewalk forms a lake when it rains. I make money from the lemons/sour oranges I sell. I give away pears like crazy to a local food pantry. I enjoy Lake Liphart. It is never standing water for more than 12 hours. We live in Buckingham Court on London Lane. So London Lane Liphart Lake Cottage? lol You know, because your neutral is a light green, you could go maximalist for a week with loads of blue and white and it would rock and shake people up! I don't know an easy way to do it other than to use textiles and blue and white wrapping paper for boxes and pictures. If you bought a fabric bolt of blue and white and then covered tables, draped pictures, made easy slipcovers with knots, it would blow people's minds. I came from a house called Ivy Woods Cottage, and used so little blue, and blue is most people's favorite color. I had checkerboard green and pale peach marble, sage green walls in the kitchen and bedroom, and rich salmon/cantaloup orange for the great room. No blue to be seen! Blue is my favorite and it was then. My husband liked green and I was making the house something he would love. I love Mackenzie-Child's checkerboard, and the blue and white is my favorite. I majored in English, so the Queen Bess floats my boat. I love how you figure out your home and I think you are so innovative. No one would think the laundry was where you have it!

About 25 years ago my collection of treadle sewing machines started. Soon there was a row of machines along the wall behind our sofa. My husband called it Treadle Alley, the breakfast nook with four machines became Treadle Plaza and he called our home Treadle Boulevard. Since he was an architectural illustrator I asked for signs. He made them like French street signs, blue, and white. I lost my dear hubby to cancer 2 1/2 years ago and everywhere I look I think about him. Paintings and shelves for my tea pots and his signs decorate my home. Hugs to all from Travel Boulevard.

They are ancestors of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I call it the castle. I feel as if we can never move because of the family history in the house.

We are Longmeadow Farm in the foothills of Alberta. Our meadow is along our 1/2 mile lane. Naming a property isn’t very common here, but those that are named usually have a sense of heritage about them, even if they are new properties.❤And many of them incorporate a family name and are quite modest.

Before my parents bought our Indiana farm in 1955, it already had the name Sleepy Hollow, as it sits quietly in a hollow off a country road. After the barn had to be torn down, we replaced the Sleepy Hollow sign on a new structure. Loved this episode in every way.

Hi Linda! We're in New Hampshire too. We live in an 1800's farmhouse that used to be a chicken farm (we still have the original chicken nesters down in the basement and we have chickens now!) Anyway, I'm thinking of naming it in a combo of our family names... "Grand-Barn" which is funny since there used to be a large barn on the property. Lol

My previous house was Called Glen Iris, given by the previous owner. There was a accident with a big delivery truck that knocked the corner of the marble plaque and the insurance replaced it but unfortunately wasn’t as old as the original one and the engraving was not to scratch. I live in South Africa and we don’t have craftsmen that know and appreciate this kind of work. I kept the old one missing corner and all and I put it on the floor against the wood shed next to a beautiful pink rose in the knew house. In my previous house where I lived for 27 years and was transformed from a 90 square meters to a 1200 square meter home, servent apartments included, where I raised my son, we moved in when he was 2 months old was the only house he knew all his life, and where I lived the best and worst moments of my life. The plaque will move again with me the day I retire and move to Finland to be near my only child. Maybe he will want to name his house « Glen Iris «

Linda ....this was a really great video. I named my house here in southern New Hampshire " Stonehouse Farm." The house is made of stone and it's on a 30 acre farm... Not very original, I know, but it fits!! We also own a home in Florida and I never thought of naming it, but now I will ...and I can't wait to come up with a neat name! The flowers that you did for your club are absolutely beautiful, and what a view of that lake! It's interesting because just last week I made 10 arrangements, mostly of peonies, for my granddaughter's sweet sixteen birthday party, and they really came out nicely!! Kindred spirits do think alike, don't you agree. Have a great week and looking forward to next Sunday's video!!🌺

Ours is called DK Basket Hobby Farm... why, because I met my husband while making a Door Knob Basket... I found an old quilt block pattern called Handy Andy, well my husband is Andy and he is handy, so our sign is the Handy Andy quilt block with DK Basket Hobby Farm over the pattern... and naming your place is fun, part of you, so yes, name your place!!!

Hi, I just subscribed to your channel. I loved this show! -- I grew up in New Kent County, Virginia where the courthouse records had been lost many years ago. We went to an Event and a man had reconstructed and compiled land records for 1863. We asked to see our rural childhood home in the book. Our property was called the Parks Tract and it had been owned by a Dr. Crump. Parks is shown on our Deed also. Consistency of names is an important element of identifying locations in deeds. -- The main road near our home went from Richmond to Williamsburg and was important in wartimes. We had always called the nearby intersection with our county road "Cross Roads." We were shocked to see that it had also been called "Cross Roads" in 1863. This is shown in the northeast corner of a map in the Library of Congress called "Map of New Kent, Charles City, James City and York counties," by Gilmer and the Virginia government. Just "Cross Roads" is not a very descriptive identifier. -- About 2 miles east of Cross Roads at Talleysville there was a Baltimore Store, located in 1863 at a "T" intersection. As children, we saw a building there by that name. -- For some unknown reason, Cross Roads was shown on "United States" war maps as Baltimore Cross Roads, even though Baltimore Store was 2 miles away. When the confusion was realized, the maps would then show "Crump's Cross Roads" on the map, alongside the terms Cross Roads and Baltimore Cross Roads. -- The terms Talleysville and Cross Roads were generally used by the southern locals, and the terms Baltimore Store and Baltimore Cross Roads were general used by the north. This created a lot of confusion in documents. The narratives sometimes identified which place they meant by saying how many miles they were from the Court House or from White House Landing. Or they would clarify that they were at Dr. Tyler's house at Talleysville, who was the son of the President. -- Official War records used the term Baltimore Cross Roads to refer to Talleysville sometimes, and sometimes it referred to Cross Roads. The problem was the same for newspapers, letters and regimental histories, of which I have searched hundreds listed in the Orders of Battle for the various battles. -- It turns out that there was a small battle called the Battle of Baltimore Cross Roads and Baltimore Store in 1863 at the same time as Gettysburg. In fact, this was the battle that was diverted by Gettysburg. A book came out recently called "Gettysburg's Southern Front." The author chose to call the chapter, "The Fight at Crump's Cross Roads." In this battle, there was fighting at both Baltimore Cross Roads and Baltimore Store. -- Nobody used the term Baltimore Crossroads, spelled various ways, after the war. If you asked an old timer now where Baltimore Crossroads was, they would say at Talleysville. The younger generation has probably never heard of it. There are Stores at that location now, but it is still rural. -- The point of this narrative is to say that naming places was a vital element in identifying places before they had numbered roads for postal routes and GPS.

Our old 1812 Mendon New York farmhouse didn’t come with a name but because we raised goats we needed to choose one. We decided on Bramblestone Farm. The hedgerows between the farm fields were filled with brambles (red and black raspberries) and stone from clearing the fields. I love homes that are named! Thank you for your informative video. Now I need to get busy and come up with a name for my 1880s Victorian village home! 😊

I remember driving on Captiva island and loving that every home had a name. After mulling over many ideas, I have named my little waterfront cottage. I vetoed a few because I realized it might spur gift giving in the future. Dragonfly, gull, butterfly, etc. may lead to lots of adorable gifts from future visitors. Keep that in mind as you decide.

I live in a very small cottage in a beautiful rural county in Virginia. Needless to say I am surrounded by old historic homes with long established names, including perhaps one of the most well known houses in America, Monticello. And a number of these estates have the word "view" at the end of their names. Cliff View, River View, Mountain View etc. So I decided to follow that tradition and call my humble home Padavue. Translated from the french Pas de vue as No View. Now that was fun.

My mother named her final home, "Her Eden". She had moved from a city house, to the 'project" farm my parents owned, after my dad died. She lived the last 10 years of her widowed life in a farmhouse, in a one street community, gardening, shopping, and reading. She was surrounded by many friends from school (retired English teacher) and her little town church. She said that was the name she always thought for a place, for her. ❤ I have the "Her Eden" sign on my porch. Btw- My house will always be, "The Old Donahoe House", since they built it in 1894.

That was so nice of you making all those flower arrangements for the club. Thank goodness some other people donated some flowers. Kind of sad it got left to you alone. BUT you created beautiful arrangements and came to the rescue. On naming our home…I have been coming up with ideas for a few years. It is an adorable small home and front was from late 1800’s. I felt the name needed to include the word “cottage” because of it’s size as well as giving it a cozy feeling. I have also described it as my dollhouse, considered naming it simply “The Cottage” or “Murf’s Cottage” for our last name Murphy. But just this week my husband suggested “The Birdhouse” and that would , for me imply a small home, as well as it seems to be a bird sanctuary of sorts. We had a nest of Goldfinch for the first time in our large rhododendron bush at our side entry. and a yearly returning bird nest we leave, in the same side entry open porch ceiling ledge, 😅who has a couple of broods a summer. We feed hummingbirds, have two birdhouses that are being used. Will have to bounce the idea off our adult daughter.
