Naming the NFL Teams | Sporcle Quiz

For my latest Sporcle quiz, I figured I'd try my hand at seeing just how many of the National Football League (NFL) teams I could recite. Note: the quiz was compiled before the Rams and the Chargers changed location, but - since I could hardly vet the answers before hand and because my knowledge of the NFL isn't that great - I wasn't to know that.

Here's some trivia to confuse you: Many years ago was a team called the Dallas Texans. They moved to KC and became the Chiefs. Then Dallas got the Cowboys. Houston then got the Oilers but they later moved to Tennessee and became the Titans. Then Houston came back into the league several years later with the Texans. The lesson? The time frame of the quiz matters (as you know). Oh. And the Patriots were originally the Boston Patriots.

Yes, teams move, but not as often as one would like to believe. The Ravens came from the original Cleveland Browns, the Colts used to be in Baltimore, the Titans were originally in Houston and were the Oilers, the Bears didn't start out in Chicago and were called the Staley's and the Lions were originally in Portsmouth and move to Detroit. Pro teams have moved as people moved, too. The Baseball Braves have moved twice, and the Dodgers and Giants moved from NY to California because of economics. And Basketball and Hockey are no different.

I think you did a great job not being an NFL fan. And of course with the quiz being out of date. Funny enough I tell people that the NFL is the way that I learned geography growing up and in one particular case it messed me up. I remember being around ten years old arguing that New England is a state oh, because it has a football team. When I tell this story now, especially since I live in Illinois west of Chicago, people generally laugh and sometimes think it is silly. But here's my argument. I grew up in the state of New Mexico. At one time that's territory was part of Mexico. so it seemed very logical to me that somewhere on the East coast, which once was part of England, became a state and named its state New England. Of course it didn't, and eventually I got the pleasure of living in England for 2 years.
@mattfreitas3843

as someone living in New England, its quite common for people to think that or that New England is a separate country entirely
@daviddeane2923
@daviddeane2923 5 лет назад
It's a leftover legacy of the colonial era, it was a name for the region and never the name of a particular colony or later state, but you get the same idea in colonies of other countries: Mexico used to be New Spain, and Canada used to be New France, for instance. So naturally the very early English colonies were called New England, though this didn't include the even earlier Virginia colony because reasons.

Ultimately, you did a great job, especially for someone who is not into American football. I think it would be fun if you turned the tables and did a Sporcle quiz on British or English history. I know there is one on there about the Tudors and another about putting royals into their proper houses (such as York or Lancaster). I could see a couple more NFL+geography quizzes being fun. For one, you could try to guess what city each team plays in. Example: only one New York (state) team actually plays in New York (state). You could also get some fun out of teams that have moved, which adds some fun with teams that changed names when they moved, and one team that had to change its name and drop their historical record.

Baltimore used to be the home of the Colts before they moved to Indianapolis. You have the phenomenon of sports teams in the US which have names which reflect their original environs. Baltimore is where a lot of people raise/ race horses. In basketball there are the LA Lakers (originally Minnesota as there are few lakes in California). Likewise the Utah Jazz (originally New Orleans) as one couldn't find a place less associated with jazz than Utah.

So, the Cardinals... Originally were a team from Chicago (the Steamrollers, if memory serves.) They later moved to St. Louis, so for many years, both the baseball and football teams in St. Louis were named the Cardinals. The Cardinals then moved on to Arizona. At this time, LA had two teams, the Rams and the Raiders (who had moved from Oakland to LA). Both teams moved out of LA some time later (both at the same time, IIRC,) with the Raiders going BACK to Oakland and the Rams going to St. Louis. In 2017, the Rams moved back to LA and there was a tentative plan for the Raiders to come back as well, but it fell through when the Chargers muscled in, and the Raiders decided to move to Las Vegas. The Indianapolis Colts were originally the Baltimore Colts and were very successful there until, with no word to anyone, the team loaded up everything from their facility into semi-trucks in the middle of the night and left for Indiana. Baltimore literally went to bed with a team and woke up without one. They were then without a team until the Cleveland Browns pulled up stakes and not only moved to Baltimore, but changed the team name to the Ravens. The city of Cleveland managed to get the rights to the old name, Browns, and after a few years were granted an expansion team to bring the league up to 32 teams, and thus the Cleveland Browns were reborn, and have been mostly AWFUL ever since. The original Houston Texans moved out of Houston and became the Kansas City Chiefs- who to this day still use the original color scheme. Houston then got another team later on named the Oilers, who then once again moved on to become the Tennesee Titans, and they too kept the original Oilers color scheme until very recently, though it remains similar, just different shades. The current Houston Texans were an expansion team and the second to bear the name.

The Baltimore Ravens are named for the Edgar Allan Poe poem "The Raven" because Poe started his literary career in Baltimore. They are also formerly the original Cleveland Browns. The owner of the Browns decided to move his team to Baltimore (to become the Ravens), and the NFL awarded a replacement franchise to Cleveland 2 years later (who were again named the Browns). But coincidentally, your former home team, the Indianapolis Colts, also started life in Baltimore as the Baltimore Colts (Maryland has a long history of horse racing, and the Preakness Stakes, the second race in the Triple Crown after the Kentucky Derby, is hosted just outside of Baltimore). They moved to Indianapolis in the early 80's in a rather shady situation where the owner literally packed the team up in the middle of the night and moved them to Indianapolis. ESPN's 30 for 30 sports documentary series has a film about the Colts move and eventual arrival of the Ravens.

Just for fun, several of the teams did move, as you said. The oldest teams began in the Great Lakes and Northeast, which would have been the largest population centers in the early 1900s and before. If you look up the first few seasons in the 1920s and 30s, you will find many teams from smaller cities that are no longer around (the cities are still around, just not the teams!). The oldest existing teams are the NY Giants (who technically now play in NJ, along with the Jets), Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and Pittsburgh Steelers (all of which have never moved, at least since the 20s or 30s - there was a LOT of instability, movements and coming and going of teams in those years!), along with the Washington Football Team (formerly Boston then Washington Redskins), the Chicago -> St. Louis -> Arizona Cardinals (so for roughly 40 years, both baseball and football teams in St. Louis were called the Cardinals) and the Cleveland -> Los Angeles -> St. Louis -> Los Angeles Rams. Next a rival football conference called the AAFC came and went and three of their teams were added: Cleveland Browns (team moved to Baltimore in the 1990s, changed to the Ravens, and later a new expansion Cleveland Browns were added in early 2000s), San Fransisco 49ers (never moved) and the Baltimore -> Indianapolis Colts (left Baltimore in secret under cover of night in Mayflower moving vans, fans in Baltimore were taken completely by surprise, very bizarre!). The next expansion was a result of another rival league, the (very interesting and trendsetting) AFL, which later merged all of its teams into the NFL. The original AFL in the early 1960s included the Buffalo Bills, Boston (New England) Patriots, NY Jets (originally Titans) and Denver Broncos in their original locations; the Dallas Texans -> Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Oilers -> Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles -> San Diego -> Los Angeles Chargers, and the Oakland -> Los Angeles -> Oakland -> Las Vegas Raiders; and by the late 1960s, the AFL added the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins (neither has ever moved) before merging with the NFL. During the competition with the AFL, the NFL added the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings in the early 1960s and the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons in the late 60s, none of which have ever moved. From the 1970s onward, the NFL added five more expansion teams, none of which has ever moved: Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans. Generally, the movement of teams and expansion of the league has been away from the Great Lakes and Northeast toward the West and SunBelt, reflecting the changing population of the US.

I don't know if you know or care, but I recommend you play quizzes on Jetpunk instead of Sporcle. Jetpunk quizzes (at least the featured ones) are always updated when necessary. It doesn't have quizzes that end if you make mistakes, but it also doesn't have nearly as many ads.

Team names are more fun when tied to the location, like the 49ers named after the California Gold Rush, or the Ravens named after the Edgar Allan Poe poem.

There WAS a New York Giants baseball team. But they moved to San Francisco in 1957, becoming the San Francisco Giants. There is STILL a New York Giants football team. On Wikipedia: "To distinguish themselves from the professional baseball team of the same name, the football team was incorporated as the "New York National League Football Company, Inc." in 1929 and changed to "New York Football Giants, Inc." in 1937. While the baseball team moved to San Francisco after the 1957 season, the football team continues to use "New York Football Giants, Inc." as its legal corporate name,[7] and is often referred to by fans and sportscasters as the "New York Football Giants".

This is the postseason playoffs right now, so the teams playing right now are in single elimination. After today, there will be 4 teams left, the 2 best in the NFC and 2 best in the AFC. Each conference has a championship, then the AFC champ plays the NFC champ plays in the Superbowl. In the AFC, Kansas City Chiefs will play the winner of New England Patriots v Los Angeles Chargers. In the NFC, Los Angeles Rams will play the winner of Philadelphia Eagles v New Orleans Saints. Helpful link here to explain: www.printyourbrackets.com/how-do-the-nfl-playoffs-work.html

St. Louis used to have Football Cardinals and baseball Cardinals. Then the football team moved to Arizona and kept their name. Then the Rams moved from Los Angeles to St. Louis for 20 years, and just moved back to LA two years ago. Similarly, New York had baseball Giants and football Giants. The baseball team moved to San Francisco over 50 years ago and the football team stayed put.

The Rams originally played in LA before moving to St. Louis and then back to LA a few years ago. The Arizona Cardinals also used to play in St. Louis and were the St. Louis Cardinals along with the baseball team. And the New York Giants are also called the New York football Giants because the San Francisco Giants of MLB used to play in New York but they moved shortly after the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to LA

Los Angeles "greedy in a way, two teams"? What about Manchester? They have two rather good teams. And 33 Miles away is Liverpool? The stadiums there are only a 1/4 mile apart? That sounds a bit greedy too. :)
@BGerbs66
@BGerbs66 5 лет назад
This isn't against you, but New York must be greedy as well since they have the Giants and Jets, and the San Francisco Bay Area must be greedy since they have the 49ers and Raiders (for now).
@daviddeane2923

Apples to oranges comparison. NFL is a closed entity; you can't get into their league unless you buy a franchise and the number of franchises is very limited. The Premier League is the top league in an open pyramid system with promotion and relegation. If you want to spend the money on players you can start with a small amateur/semi-pro club team in a small town and work your way up to the top by winning promotion. That's why Manchester has two teams in the Premier League and that's why greater London has something like a dozen teams in the old Football League/top four divisions of English soccer (which by itself is 94 clubs, with many hundreds more below it). I know you probably wrote that tongue-in-cheek, but for the benefit of those who don't know, it isn't greed, it's the result of a completely different way of organizing sport than what we are used to here in the USA.

LA is more greedy than you know. They're home to two NBA teams (Lakers & Clippers, the latter of which is originally from San Diego), two NFL teams (Rams & Chargers, again the latter being from San Diego), two baseball teams (the Dodgers & Angels, the latter formerly being the Anaheim Angels), and an NHL team (the Kings). Los Angeles is home to nine major sporting franchises across all four of the most popular professional sports. Being that I grew up in San Diego county, I am more than a little bitter about the two major-league teams that were stolen from my beloved home. The Clippers were called so because of the maritime history of San Diego (after clipper ships, fast merchant ships from the pre-steam era). The Chargers ... I've no idea where their name originated, and shall not forgive them for abandoning their home city (founded in 1960, left for LA in 2017).

Most Texas teams are usually "cowboy" related. The Texas Rangers, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Astros(because of nasa) and Rockets. The Houston Texans used to be the Oilers. But they moved to Tennessee and stayed the Oilers until they changed it to the Titans. Just something to keep in mind.
