At this year's winter NAMM show in Anaheim, CA, I had a chance to speak with guitar legend Marty Friedman, who is known for his lead guitar role with metal pioneers Megadeth, his virtuoso supergroup Cacophony with Jason Becker, and his extensive solo career. Marty revealed some details about his upcoming album, Inferno, featuring his first collaboration with Jason Becker since the Cacophony days, shared his experiences of making music in Japan and throughout the world, and offered some heartfelt advice for guitarists looking to find success in today's music scene.

Well. Marty speaks of the truth. At least for me. Even though I love guitar to death, there is only so much guitar instrumental song my ear can take before I switch to songs with vocal.

Honestly, I think instrumental music is getting bigger rather than shrinking. But I do see where he is coming from. Players such as Vai and Satriani can get boring because it's mainly just them in the spotlight. Now compare those guitar players to bands such as Scale the Summit and Animals as Leaders where the focus is more on the songwriting and letting each player have their moment to shine. I hear more and more instrumental bands come out each day so obviously a good majority of people are catching on.

A big example of what you're talking about and whom many people sometimes dismiss is Umphrey's McGee. They're live shows are very much an example of what you're talking about. It's not necessarily my type of music, but I definitely admire what they do and how they do it. Just like the artists you mentioned.

+Andy Lai well it would've made sense in the context. I think Marty gives some good advice, but I think that if more people had the confidence to make instrumental music, then it would be more accepted in the industry.

He's absolutely right. Although personally I do really enjoy instrumental records, there's nothing worse than a great band with a shitty singer. I completely agree with actually being in a band probably being better for you than going all solo. Although there are a few exceptions. Nice to hear from Mr Friedman!
@BrendanMacsMusic
@BrendanMacsMusic 10 лет назад
I think Marty's views about Instrumental music are more about instrument CENTRIC instrumental music, IE the Satriani's or the Vai's type of instrumental. And with myself being in an instrumental band, id have to agree with him. Instrumental music where the melody is all guitar centric is boring as bat shit these days. My band has moved away from our guitar centric creations and I deliberately pushed my guitar parts to the layering of the creations. No one cares about the sweeps and taps and all the BS that you can do on a guitar, they just dont. People want a great song that tells a story regardless of how good you are. You CAN keep an audience's attention if you are just willing to take the focus off your own playing and put the energy into the song your writing and keeping the material interesting and moving. Look at the orchestral greats and learn how they wrote instrumental music that still captivates people today.
@CameronRyanGuitar1

I agree with you but I think Vai and Satriani are phenomenal songwriters...I can not stand listening to michael angelo batio or players like him though where there usually is not even a melody!!!

So Honest Marty (in a way). What he actually wants to say is that "if i hadn't been part of Cacphony/ Megadeth, nobody would've known me". I love Marty and all, but that's the truth.

I don't agree with this: "Another thing - guitar players don't even like to listen to guitar players." or this: "Instrumental music is kind of a dead-end street." But I guess the rest is pretty solid advice.
@arsenalfanrichi

Bit insulting to the guy playing Jason's comosition to say it's as if Jason has reached through and played it for him... I expect itll be more about him being an amazing guitarist himself.
@ryan.1357
@ryan.1357 8 лет назад
+arsenalfanrichi I saw in a different interview somewhere that he had specifically asked the guy to play as if he were Jason (to mimic his style). In that sense, it's a compliment.

Dave didn't try hard enough to KEEP him. Sure Marty would've stayed if his voice was considered valid in terms of the direction of the music.
@Lorelai271
@Lorelai271 9 лет назад
+Yukon Blade Grinder TV Yeah thats true, but Marty was just tired of heavy metal as he said, they would had to change their genre a lot to keep him in the band and that would make no sense ... I actually dont like how are all people like: Come back to Megadeth Marty and insulting him for what he's doing now. They cant just see that he's doing what he has always wanted to do and that he's satisfied like that... though reunion with him and Nick would be amazing ofc
