I'm 70 yr old...been a fan of this beautiful angel for decades.....if God is merciful (and he is) I'll meet her on the other side and finally get to tell her of my unending love.
One of the kindest people I've ever met in Nashville. It was a delightful surprise for me the night she came to one of my benefit guitar polls and sat in on a round that included singer-songwriters Don Henry and Skip Ewing. She was personally very kind to me and I've never forgotten that. May Her Memory Be Eternal! 😇😇😇 🙏🙏🙏
This song made me smile seeing Nanci perform it with Roseanne Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter years back, but tonight I have tears in my throat and cannot hum a tune. She touched me down deep in the soul. Farewell "Mary Margaret" author...sure hope that spirit of yours is free, and soaring above the sky well beyond the light!
I only just found out she passed looking for her music to help me sleep and feel just this. Her music also touched me deeply and carried me through the highs and lows. Goodbye and thank you for such wonderful music.
@@MrDtJ1 The Kennedys, Pete and Maura did a beautiful celebration of her life's work this afternoon for about 1 1/2 hrs. I believe you can find it on You Tube under their weekly Sunday broadcasting as grounded until covid gets them back on the road. Absolutely beautiful. Stay Safe!
God Bless you Sharon for all you do! I recently lost my sister which held music close all her life. Nanci, if you could sing a song to my beloved sister Stephanie that be great! Rest in Peace. 🙏
Rest easy Nancy. 💔 This world just got a lot darker today. We're all far poorer now that you've left us, but you'll never be forgotten and your beautiful music will live on. RIP Nancy
one thing I have experienced a number of times, holding space as beings pass through their bodysuits to whatever mystery is next, is that the energy that is released into the world at that time is pure light....making the world a little brighter....her gift, her light will continue to light us on our paths my friend.....
So sad that Nanci is gone from this world too young. I first heard Nanci on a compilation disc called "Steal This Disc" with the song "Once in a Blue Moon". I kept coming back to that song and when Other Voices came out, I was hooked. We saw her maybe 5 times over the years, my daughters really grew up with her. A beautiful person, wonderful voice and great songwriter. "When we lost John" always gets me. Hopefully, her and John and Mary Margaret are together again.
The first time i got to hear her she was on the college circuit it was the mid 70s What a beautiful voice been listening since. Her passing broke my heart.
Sad news I just heard today. She was always faithful to us here in Belfast at a time when nobody played here. She was a talented girl and always came across as a lovely person with a good heart.
I remember coming home from work late one night. I was flipping through the channels and the late night evangelists. I came across a broadcast of Austin City Limits with Nancy singing. I just could not turn it off. I was mesmerized....and always have been. She's the greatest talent that nobody I know, know about.
"Old songs need new voices singing them in new places to stay alive". From the liner notes of "Other Voices, Other Rooms" . Apparently this was said in a conversation between Nanci and Emmylou Harris about the songs of Kate Wolf, and upon hearing of Nanci's passing, it's now our responsibility to keep songs like this alive. Memory Eternal Nanci Griffith.
Such a gift she had. A voice clear as a bell and a down home story teller with a gift to make the listener feel the depth of her tales. Heard her in LA years ago. A magical evening. Singing with the angels now. Beautiful soul.
Thank you for memories of a far simpler life, when Austin was home and family. Now it's all hustle, bustle and strangers. Rest in peace. Time for another generation to find their simple times.
John was Nanci’s date to the senior prom. He dropped her off at her house after it was over and died in a motorcycle crash between her house and his. I understand she just met up with him again last week and went on another date in heaven.
She touched you with such heartfelt truth like no other! Amazing songwriter and artist! I saw her many times over here in England and are amongst my fav concerts! She will sadly missed!
I’m a Brit and only discovered Nanci about 6months ago and fell in love with her smile her voice and beauty. All those years before I now consider wasted. So shocked to hear the sad news. 😢😢
it was the UK and Ireland in particular that were her greatest supporters and probably kept her writing and recording over the years. Thankful for that.
I wrote her a personal letter around 1984. To my surprise, she replied with a short note on a card. I was so thrilled. Love her music and always will. She is a treasure and will be missed by so many she touched.
The greatest story tellers in music. The 'Light beyond these wood' album was my introduction into Nanci's music. And I still remember buying the reacord from the Boots store 12 miles from where I lived. Like Steinbeck's Wayward Bus her songs always took you on a journey.
You said it. Must say thx for that. I could never have got through speaking or writing this same thought. "Strange, the land of tears." A quote from St. Exupêry's *The Little Prince.*. On this day March 2022, Mark (Arizona usa)
A Clever delightful lady who sang a lovely song straight from her heart❤️🎵👍 rip...This world was just a fleeting show for Nanci's illusion given❤️🎶🎵👍amen.
Heart breaking....fly high with the white crown sparrow....a voice like no other... Have listened to that voice for so many years.....love and comfort to her family....she will be missed
I envy all of you who knew this wonderful human being and her special talent. I just discovered her today because of her death and am here with tears in my eyes listening to this song and mourning the loss of a person I have not known until now. What a tremendous loss for greatness and goodness in the world. I wish I had known you Nanci when you were still with us.🎸🎤🕯️🎶
What sad news to hear Nanci Griffith has died. I listened tonight, so many inspirational songs, it brought up many thoughts of the amazing concerts in Glasgow and Ireland. Your lyrics and music are 'food to the soul'. Rest in peace, and prayers for you, you'll never be forgotten with such a legacy and catalogue of sweet music.
Saw her twice in Oregon back in the mid-90s. Loved her and her music long before that. Traveled many miles across this country at times with her songs keeping me company.
"And when we die we say we'll catch some blackbird's wing and we will fly away to heaven - come some sweet bluebonnet spring..." Goodbye, dearest great and sweet Nanci (born July 6, 1953, Seguin, Texas, USA - died August 13, 2021), will you now look from heaven down to us...
every time i see nanci griffith i end up in tears. one of my all time heros in music. i only hope to meet her once before i die. i am runing out of time but she still shines so bright for me.
To me too, Terry, Nanci comes straight to my heart, warms me and devastates me. And tears down her cheeks. I love Nanci, meeting her would be the most beautiful thing that could happen to me ... Nanci is a wonderful dream
Thank God for friends and especially childhood friends. How wonderful it would be to see Nanci in The Olympia in Dublin again. Listen to her songs and stories and sing along just like the true believers we are.
I'm older, and I am a man, who was once a boy, of course. But this song gives me a lump in my throat, about MY childhood. Because it is so relateable and the melody and voices are so evocative. What a piece of art this is.
I miss you Naci we listened to you in the car with my mom in Georgia but I never heard this song until today 💛 theres a light beyond these woods for you, I love you RIP 8-13-21
Man I miss Nanci. I went to so many of her concerts in Philly & suburbs since the 80’s. Her music got me thru so many tough times over the years & then this Pandemic. Love you Nanci.
Her songs made me think, made me feel, brought me happiness and joy. She was an angel on earth and as she rests in peace, she will always be an angel. RIP your awesome song bird.
My first radio job was a Country station in Penticton BC, Canada in the early 90's. I wasn't a Country music fan at all. But, this station was one of the very rare cases where the on-air people got to pick what music they played. One of the acts that moved me the most was Nanci Griffith. When I first hear 'Love At The 5 & Dime' I thought 'Wow! There is some very good stuff here!' It's just the corporate media keep us ignorant of it. I'm sad at her passing as I didn't play her music as often as I should have on my Radio Bandcouver show on Co-op Radio. My show is very eclectic from Punk-Country, from Folk to Funk, to Psychedelia to electronica etc. Rest In Peace, Naci Griffith. Thank you for opening my eyes and ears to the GOOD Country music.
I first heard Nanci Griffith in 1988 when “Little Love Affairs” came out. It was playing overhead in Newbury Comics, a Boston based store more known for Alternative Rock than Country. By the time “Gulf Coast Highway” and the title song were done, I’d bought the CD; a first for any artist for me. After playing the album several times that night, I went out the next day and bought her entire Philo collection on sale at Lechmere! “Mary Margaret” moved me to tears the first time I heard it; so much innocence, sadness and beauty in one song. I saw her in concert several times; as wonderful as “One Fair Summer Evening”, still on my “Desert Island” list. She will be missed, RIP.
I beleive this Song is about Nanci's friend and also about her Boyfriend at High School. Her BF gave her a ride to the Prom on his Motorbike. He said he would pick her up later. Sadly on the way back he crashed and was killed. With all this and illness Nanci had a sad life. Hopefully now she is at peace. RIP Nanci Griffith xxx
wow....we as a human race lost a beautiful soul with Nanci going to Heaven and she will truly be missed. The Angel Choir will be so much better now with Nanci. God Bless Her.
I'm still in a state of shock. I know when I start listening to all these favorites of mine, I'll have a good cry. Love you, Nanci, and I know I'll see you on the other side.
I don’t remember when I “found” Nanci, but it seems like forever and now she has died but she is alive in my mind and heart. Life is about what you leave behind, and Nanci left us with wonderful music and inspiration and memories. Well done.
Nanci Griffith, Kate Wolf, Judee Sill three female singer/songwriters who must be remembered for their outstanding talents. The sincere honesty in their music is SO real. The saong here is one of favorites of Nanci's from her first appearance of Austin City Limits (p.s. the pretty yellow dress she's wearing here, she made herself. A true multi-talent)
