I think Nancy and Ann Wilson are seriously one of the most talented women in music. I admire them beyond words. Ann has such a powerful set of vocals and Nancy is immensely talented overall as a musician, and sings like an angel. This video is priceless, it should be entered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a 'behind the scenes' look at the recording process behind famous hits from certain decades. In this case the 1980's had decent technology, but it shows the dedication of the musicians to achieve perfection on their records. Heart is easily one of my favorite rock bands!
Wow, I'm impressed you have the unique recording of Nancy singing while she was sick. Her voice cracks sometimes and she really has to push. You can tell near the end that it's really starting to wear her down. They tried re-recording it after she felt better but they ended up sticking with the initial tracks because they liked the emotion and rawness, and it ended up becoming their first #1 hit.
No autotune, no editing to the impossible, you can actually hear when the tape starts, something I haven't hear for years, pure talent and a great voice :-)
Using tape is more real time editing. Every time they stop the tape, they rewind so she can overdub and replace a bad line…. Singers still do it the same way, they just have digital so they can retake a line many times and edit the best ones together. Those that can't sing well, get Melodyne'd or AutoTuned. Melodyne is what they used on Justin Bieber for his first couple of albums, it's VERY hard to detect Melodyne because they can surgically fix each syllable if need be, so it's not over the entire vocal line like AutoTune. Melodyne requires more time to edit, thus costs more money to fix a track. AutoTune is by far a less costly route since it's either on/off and they can replicate it easy for live performances since they have AutoTune for live applications. I think Cher was the only one that used AutoTune in a manner where it was an effect on her voice rather than fixing bad vocals because Cher can actually sing without pitch problems, after that, they should have just taken AutoTune off the market. What's F'd up is the RIAA doesn't care if something is AutoTuned or Melodyne'd, and they don't care if someone has actual talent or not, they'll still give out Grammy's to any Tom, Dick and Idiot, as long as they can get enough votes from their peers. The RIAA needs to raise their standards on what is acceptable. Meaning, they should not allow any song or album with drum machines replacing drummers, samples of someone else's recording, AutoTune vocals, Melodyne vocals. Maybe the industry might improve, but unfortunately I don't see that happening anytime in the near future.
@@Oneness100 It's called a punch in but that's not the right way to do it. You let them get into the song and sing all the way through. Then you go back and note where you want to punch in any mistakes. The way a punch in works is you can roll tape and they sing along with it. They're actually hearing their recorded voice and then, while it's still in playback, you can hit the record button and it will start recording and they don't know that it's live at that moment. Then you hit it again and it stops recording. But all the while, it's in playback. It's seamless and not all jerky like this. I have no idea who's the engineer but I'd never record anyone this way.
What a professional, calmly going through the process, not yelling and screaming, showing no frustration....really nice. Obviously not as easy as Nancy makes it look.
Actually, I'm not sure what all that starting and stopping was all about. That's not typical. Normally it's been fully rehearsed by the time you get to the studio and you cut complete tracks. Then we punch in mistakes. But not what they're doing. I'd be pissed because you can't get a good feel going. But whatever.
@@danroberts9050 I’m not sure but I know she was sick with a bad cold during this recording session. They may be re-recording sections they knew they needed to comp from earlier takes or for double tracking. It’s hard to say. It would be cool if we could hear the talkback but alas, not.
Nancy has the "It" factor and she really sends me into the stratosphere with this song. She will always be thrilling to me. As an old man now she still raises my blood pressure and alwys will. Rock on Nancy~!!
And they'd only do "punch-ins" here and there, not all through. Like she's doing a couple of punch-ins here. Nowadays one line of a song might be pasted together from 5 takes (a word here, a syllable there) and you can't tell. Makes them seem to be super-singers. They don't have to stand and deliver the song from start to finish.
No Sheet. Dam. That Eng. was trying to get just 1 phrase redone for this song. She has so many takes, all were good. Wish we could hear what he was saying to her. Nancy was so patient too, just adorable.
He was referring to her vocal prowess, not her looks. She's obviously gorgeous so there can't possibly be any mistake there. But just listening to this, I would have to question her sound here. I was told when she recorded this, she had a cold and had to do multiple takes, which they're clearly showing here. Even witnessing and hearing this, I'd still bet on her with another lead. Her sis is obviously the BORN lead singer in the group. But again, stellar try, Nancy!!
Her talent always intimidated me a bit, but it seemed to scare her even a little more ... for that alone, I always have and always will love Nancy. To contemplate that sweet soul wrapped up in such a flawless physical package. Ye nonbelievers, behold the Lord's masterful handiwork in this lady.
Yup. Recording before Pro Tools. It was glorious. People getting into a rhythm of performing and listening, making decisions on the spot. Nothing between the music and the audience but microphones and basic electronics. Talent, judgement, craft. A lost art. And of course....Nancy Wilson. Rock Goddess.
I think the most amazing thing about her recording session of this song is that she has stated in interviews that she actually had a cold when she recorded it and yet despite that, she still sounded perfect!
I've had a crush on this "bad ass blond" since "Dreamboat Annie"! I've always loved watching here "manhandle" her guitar! What a doll! A consummate showman!!!!
This song, “These Dreams” by Heart is in my Top 10 favorites of all time!!! This song is beautiful, and it transports me into heaven every time I hear her voice! LOVE THIS SONG.
Nancy clearly has a lovely voice but because of Ann's proximity she will always be compared to what is one of the strongest voices in rock music history. In any other band, *SHE* would be the lead singer. And notice that at 01:41 when the music cuts out, she's able to continue and remain in tune.
I think people make too much of that sometimes. Fact is, most groups, unless groups that do a lot of dancing, tend to have one main lead singer. Most of the time they are the only ones who sing lead. It's clear to me that Nancy could easily sing lead more and maybe share leads sometimes if she really wanted or pushed to do. That's an ego thing to me sometimes though, which she clearly doesn't have. After finally starting to listen to more of their music, and not just the hits, I'm hearing a lot of harmonizing that appears to be mostly both of them. Something I wasn't expecting at all. It sounds greats and is giving me an even more respect for them I never expected to have.
Just so you know...when the music stops the first time and she continues singing it only stops for us.She is still hearing it.That is the engineer isolating her voice for closer listening.
I guess by the time the recording was done, Nancy was already exhausted... its not really easy being a singer, especially way back then, you need to have the talent the voice & patient to sing those line and repeating it over and over again the whole day... this is what we call real talent and singing...today's singers were just opening there mouth without even nothing coming out from it... just because of those computer effects they think they can sing, where in reality they don't and they can't.
+Divas Live If your talking about Antares Auto-Tune that haven't been invented yet. You no longer need actual talent because of that. The machine can auto-correct the pitch of your voice. This isolated track by Nancy isn't perfect. If you compare it with the actual vocals in the final albums. It had some audio effects added to the vocal track like compression, reverb, slight chorus.
while I agree that she is great and can sing the song from start to finish beautifully, they did not write this song and the songwriter and producer was looking for very specific things for the studio version. That's why they kept punching in until she got exactly what they needed. And the end result was the bands first number one hit and one of the best pop ballads that has ever been recorded❤
Growing up in the 70's, she was the permanent crush-Goddess ultimate women that I - and millions of guys all over America dreamed about. She will always be that to me to my last moment on Earth.
This rehearsal video of Nancy is LIFE! The song itself digs down deep and grips my soul! I often watch this rehearsal video when I want to feel that much more closer to the original recording! Thank you so much for this GLORIOUS video!
missNYC, I agree with you wholeheartedly ! The studio refines music to perfection ,sometimes at the expense of Humanity. This rehearsal clip reminds us that Nancy is Human with the same Heart, Soul and frailties that the rest of us have.And... in so doing, draws us much closer to her. Dana
This isn't a rehearsal. She is "punching" vocals. It would make more sense if you could hear the producer. This is how most records were made between 1970 and 2000. Many producers, like myself, still use this method because we prefer analog recording. You can polish a track but you still have to be able to sing.
other forms did.usually bigger studios used them. Eventide Harmonizer H49 and fairlight come to mind. takes a longer time for sure though.... she sounds great here, but i think there was some touching up on a few notes.
I'm glad Ann turned down doing this song and that Nancy had a cold when she recorded this. A ton of circumstances leading to this being their first #1 hit. Just amazing ladies.
just an amazing voice. I remember listening to this about a million times. it is funny how Ann and Nancy have been known to say their 80's years were somehow lacking. truth is, they were amazing in the 70s AND the 80s. I plan to see them this summer with my wife and just can't wait.
+toe knee Maybe they had to say that to get in the Hall of Fame run by people who hate the 1980s for being too white, too upbeat, to clean cut and because they hated Reagan.
She sings like an angel, no one has quite the same smooth beautiful voice. Pity we have so relatively few Nancy vocal songs, she would have several solo albums to her own name by now in a fair world.
Nancy Wilson is not only an excellent guitarist, she is beautiful, she has a phenomenal voice, they could have recorded more songs with her in the first voice, and Ann in the second voice, simply spectacular!!!
I never realized just what an amazing voice Nancy has, probably because wew all heard Anne's voice. Listening to some of the songs, it's very hard to tell, if you are not seeing the singer, which of the lovely ladies is singing. Nancy was always my favorite becasue I like blondes, but Anne was a very clsoe secong. Being 66 years old, watching videos of Heart makes me know whata truly talented group they all were. The vocals were obviously great, but the instruments were playeed superbly as well. Thank you, Heart, for allowing us to see and hear your talent, and thank you Nancy and Anne for fueling many many a fantasy.
+William J. Castillo 2:02 made me cry. Hearing the voice alone seems to make it REAL emotion to me I guess, like it's not just for show but someone in their room, all alone, singing truly from the depth of their heart. Really touching there.
In the early 90's I bought my 1st CD player. Before that , it was all vinyl. By a quirk of fate, This was in it. What a great way to bring me into the digital age.
What a GREAT upload! I have been a Heart fan since Dreamboat Annie (1976). I have seen them in concert at least 5 times. The fist time I saw them they opened for Kansas, and Heart was just the appetizer, or so I thought. Heart opened and they were awesome...then Kansas took the stage and my friend and I left after 3 songs. We went to see Kansas, but the energy and performance from Heart put Kansas to shame!
It´s incredible how after listening to this beautiful woman's voice in this song, and after watching how beautifully she looks and behave, even she had to repeat her singing a lot of times, you literally start to feel like you're really falling in love with her. My God! What a singer!!
They do make them like this...they are hidden treasures mostly overlooked by the media..I find outstanding talent all the time hidden in some pretty amazing places..but they will never get radio play..hey and that's ok..they are putting bread on their families tables..Heart inspires most if not all of us who love music and making it!
In my life I had a void. I think that I would have loved to have Nancy for a kid sister, a daughter or a granddaughter. I have had none of these and she would have fit the bill as anyone of these. She seems like a very likable person and very talented to boot.
I actually think Nancy is better now. They were just on the Kelly Clarkson show I've seen Anne perform a few times but never them together live and Nancy still has it man
Such an iconic song and a major track in my 1980s rock playlist, it’s even more amazing seeing the work that went on behind the scenes in making this track.
Those synths at the start are so mid-80s. Makes you think of Miami Vice, or the soundtracks from the films At Close Range and Manhunter which have a similar style.
I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this, for a myriad of reasons. The beauty of art and talent being created, the need for this again in our lives... sometimes it’s ok to stop future progress when an acceptable form of human struggle to achieve perfection has to happen organically. Rather than a computer making you a superstar.
Yowers, Nancy's a complete pro. She's not flustered, and her concentration is beyond spectacular! Not to mention she's one of the sexiest women in human existence. Be still my heart.
Wow, thanks so much for posting this! She is incredible! I never even realized Nancy sang lead on this song, which is one of my favorites! I've seen some reality TV people recording, and most can't even sing. When it's all chopped up and edited (after way too many takes and a fortune in studio hours 🤣), it sounds nothing like them. Nancy sounds EXACTLY like the finished recording. I bet her and Ann wrote and recorded in record time. Absolute PERFECTION.
