More playing withe the Ipod Nano V6 MIPI LCD. this time with a £1.50 camera module, a £2 FPGA, a 40p PIC and a few voltage regulators. All I need now is something to use it for....

Like the simplicity and cost. How about a bunch of these as a ball/sphere where the camera is on the opposite side of the screen so you see "through" the ball? Might be fun to play with such a ball

I am very excited about what you are doing here. Did you ever share what the large installation you originally were working on with these displays was?

Make invisibility cloaking tiles. One use could be to see through obstructions to your view when driving a car - for example the door beams framing the windshield.

I'm just thinking of the uses for somethign like this. thats cool as heck. it I can use them to make IP cameras. and make coustom systems with it for my solar and wind projects.

Build a shield covered with screens, and a matching array of cameras behind and use it as an invisibility cloak?

I don't have an exact figure for just the FPGA but approx 13mA at 1.8V , and 22mA @2.8v. This was for the larger FPGA on the proto so maybe a little less for this small one

Haven't looked at these ones but I suspect filter may be hard to remove - maybe even on chip. If not on the chip, you could use an external M12 type lens

I use protel 98. Still rocks on my 486. It cost me $3K AUS back then, so I'll use it till I'm dead! Is MikeCAD / PCB out yet? :)

Nice as always. What cad is that? (not the davecad :) You could get some of the modern Canon or Sony hypersensitive sensors they use in SLRs and do a large baseline stereo system that watches the sky to capture UFOs and sell it to enthusiast across the world so we can bust open the secrecy so we can get superluminal interstellar personal vehicles instead of living in this lie of a society where the truth about the visitors are kept from us. Just throwing that outthere as a random idea :)

That's a really nifty setup. A lot of those cameras look like the kind of cameras Nokia used/s in older/cheaper mobile phones.

Man, I've always wanted to be able to interface with those tiny cell phone cameras. Would be useful to make one of those PCB quad copters that fits in the palm of your hand, except instead of the fpv camera being heavier then the thing, it could be one of those tiny cell phone cameras that you have and then have on board processing. Not sure how you'd go about making the video transmitter, though. Unless its better to just use one and hook it up.

To save those looking for specs some time: - The camera module is an Omnivision OV9655. - The FPGA is a Lattice MachXO2 part, such as the LCMXO2-256HC-4SG32C.

Can you get APS-C or 35mm 2K sensors from China? At what sort of price? I've heard that their security camera hardware provides sensor quality and features comparable to prosumer digital cameras.

I have done a lot of searching and it seems like anything over 1" sensors are only really available from real foundry's. I have never found a 'no name' source for large sensors but I would love to be proven wrong.

What would be cool to do with this is to build an intelligent low-cost open-source automotive accident cam. Throw in some G-sensors, a high speed SD card reader, get it to record reliably in a loop to an MP4 file with 'telemetry' on screen. Bob is your fathers brother. There are tons of far-eastern accident cams but they're mostly all shit. If you were to market a good alternative, perhaps as a kit, I for one would pick one up.
