Scott's NAPOLEON is a great masterpiece. I agree with the NEW YORK TIMES: "“Napoleon” is consistently surprising partly because it doesn’t conform to the conventions of mainstream historical epics, which is especially true of its startling, adamantly unromanticized title character. (The movie also doesn’t always conform to the historical record, and some may take issue with the portrayal of the Battle of Austerlitz.) In the early scenes, Napoleon seems to be another of Phoenix’s taciturn, unnervingly volatile, enigmatically damaged, violent men. The difference is that this Napoleon, with his bloat, scowls and consuming needs, often resembles nothing as much as an angrily petulant baby, one whose cruelty and pathological vanity make the horror he unleashes unnervingly familiar." A MUST SEE MOTION PICTURE!

As a Brit, i think Scott is terrible. Waterloo was probably one of the better portrayal of Napoleon. And the biggest hated within France wasnt Napoleon himself, although put the fear of God into people. The truly hared person was Citizen Robsphere. Whilst Napoleon was ok hated a lot in Europe, thats a given but he knew the British werent going yo execute him.

@@freeedward8 I can’t agree with this view it’s ok to use so freedom of dialogue but it’s not ok to change history and add and remove things just for the sake of cinema. This is history, a set record of events and not some lose facts that can be thrown together then you don’t get a movie about Napoleon but a loosely based one upon him.

Gosh, I watched it recently and although I'm not a historian/banaportist, I was sitting there just trying not to have a blast. I'll just try to spell it out in a concise and structured way. For a better understanding, here is the chronology of events in the film: Toulon, 13 Vendemiaire, marriage to Josephine, Egypt, 18 Brumaire, Cosnoulism, coronation, Austerlitz, divorce from Josephine, Tilsit, marriage to Marie-Louise and the birth of a son, the War of 1812, exile on Elba, 100 days and Waterloo, exile on St Helena. Understood, accepted, and now I'll move on to the pros (yes, yes, I found them): + well filmed siege of Toulon. Maybe because I never studied this moment of General Bonaparte's biography in detail, BUT it was beautiful, epic, realistic. + about realism, I liked the way Marie Antoinette's execution was shown, and how a horse was killed under Napoleon, and in principle all this bloodshed was uncensored. At least there's authenticity here. + showed how Napoleon gives Alexander Beauharnais' sword to little Eugène Beauharnais, but after that we will not see Eugène anymore) + drew the viewer's attention to the fact that Consul Bonaparte is trying to make peace with the countries that are part of the anti-French coalitions, that he really wants peace, not new conquests. + Colencourt (unlike all the marshals) has screen time and even a couple of phrases. + Napoleon is shown rubbing Talleyrand's (or Kolencourt's, I don't really remember) ear. It's just that this gesture of his is often mentioned but rarely shown. + handsome, young, arrogant Alexander before Austerlitz) + the soundtrack is cool, under it you could make such a candy.... + picture This is where the pluses (and with them my nerve cells) end. So, let's go over the cons: - we had no Italian campaigns, not at all. No Arcole Bridge, no Marengo, forget it. Instead, General Bonaparte went to Egypt to shoot at the pyramids. - There's no chemistry with Josephine. I didn't see her. Or maybe I'm used to the fact that Bonaparte in love with her was ardent and determined, and here... well shy. And in private she asks him to say "You're nothing without me" and he...repeats..... - his mother also controls him as she wants: "Well, son, go to the bedroom, there's a naked girl waiting for you, we'll check whether you're infertile or not." And he's so shy, he goes to check... - With Josephine he is quite rude and cringe, in the divorce scene he slapped her face to calm her down. And we are not shown that Josephine was happy with him, we are asked to believe it. Personally, I wouldn't fall in love with a Napoleon like that. - Becoming Emperor... Bonaparte is shown as such an uncouth savage that the viewer would have to ask: "How could he have been crowned at all? For what merit?" Because in the film, he's a simple soldier with no charm. - A lot has been written about Austerlitz, I won't dwell on it, but the way the crowd of men and horses runs at the crowd of men and horses..... - Napoleon is obsessed with the idea of an heir. Okay, if it was mentioned a couple of times, but no. It's almost the main conflict of the film. So he divorces Josephine, goes to Tilsit to see Alexander and almost immediately says to him: "I want to marry your sister, are there any available?" - And yes, there was no Jena, Auerstedt, Eylau, Friedland, Wagram either, he decided to go straight to Russia. - To be honest, when I first saw Napoleon with a sword on a horse in the trailer, I thought: "Well, in principle, for the first Italian campaign, it would be forgivable..." But, comrades, Borodino... The battle itself was shown very little, unlike Waterloo.) - Josephine had more chemistry with Alexander than with Napoleon. We were shown how he came to her after Bonaparte's exile to Elba and they danced a waltz together. Alone. - Every time he addresses the soldiers, Napoleon says "heroes of Austerlitz", because according to the film Austerlitz was almost his only full-fledged victory. - Waterloo was heavily emphasised over the other battles. I have nothing against it, but for some reason I get the impression that Napoleon loses campaigns more often than not. You know, like Egypt, 1812, the last anti-French coalition against Toulon and Austerlitz. - and, yes, at Waterloo he fought on horseback with a sword. - What I lacked in Napoleon himself was temperament, that iron character and irascibility, and just a little bit of... genius. Maybe only the Napoleonic legend meets these requirements, maybe Joaquin is a talented actor, but I don't believe him. - And also, if the purpose of the film is to show a historical figure, then perhaps the emphasis should be on her achievements, not her bedfellows? Even in the Josephine series, Napoleon isn't as obsessed with heirs and... ahem... ways of making them. Well I wanted to write in multiples. I forgot to add, I don't know if it's a bad translation or if it's intended, but in the Russian dubbing Napoleon (addressing Alexander in an empty hall) said something like: "Boy, where are you? Don't worry, I'll just spank you." My face at this point: 😳🕶️🤏. I'm not an expert or anything like that, but for me the film is 6/10 + As I said for the visuals and atmosphere (And of course for the cute Alexander :3)

This movie was such a turd. On a brighter note, it being so abysmal, was a great motivator to watch far longer documentaries about Napoleon's rise and conquests. A man so energetic and charismatic that even his enemies were fans of his charisma and tactics. Whatever Napoleon descendant did to Ridley Scott, giving him a mean wet willy or pissed on his lunch. It must have been such a memorable and haunting horror to him that making a complete and utter character assassination of Napoleon, in his late years, was the only option left. Hopefully a Napoleonic ghost will haunt Ridley along the way.

@Borderose
@Borderose 9 месяцев назад
Not even the romance. It would have been fine if it focused on the romance. Nah, from the sounds of it the main goal was to focus on how "pathetic" Napoleon was and how dreadful it was that all those lives were snuffed in the name of his ego. As if that was all that Napoleon cared about. I had a bad feeling from the trailers and sample scenes alone. I have no doubt an actor like Phoenix could actually pull off Napoleon, but the direction Scott chose to use him is what baffles me. He made Napoleon scowl and bitch and whine too much and made him out to be this...ughh incel like creature who rose to power by sheer happenstance. This script was written by bugmen. Bugmen with bug people values.

Josephine was very sweet, charming, feminine - all what Nap loved in women. Absolutely nothing like a manipulator icy whore by Kirby. And surely their relationship was not as toxic and degenerated as Scott's morbid fantasies. Nap was jealous at the beginning and actually only once. And then Jose was quietly a bit jealous sometimes.
