Karl Ludwig Schulmeister - a true supporter of the emperor, a real Bonapartist, a minister’s son with a longstanding career as a smuggler.
He was an Austrian double agent who was responsible for conquering cities and spearheading a battle that led to the destruction of the Roman Empire. While he was acting chief policeman in Vienna, he was an escaped fugitive being hunted for under other aliases - his tricks and skills in the art of disguise were legendary. But nowadays controversy circles his story - was he a national hero or a traitor? The debate continues.

I had never heard of this Napoleonic spy. Schulmeister seems to have been a smart, observant, intelligent and ambitious guy. A man from the border between Germany and France who followed the flow of history and knew how to take advantage of the fact that the border had become extremely valuable and eventually dangerous for many local people. The documentary is very good, the detailed historical context clearly explains the importance of this interesting character who seems to have been quite efficient in the roles he performed.

Might not of been his actual name. For many spies were undercover with many aliases. Much like today. We might even be fooled to believe that he is someone else.

I don't believe he was on anyone's side but his own. A fluid loyalty seems to have been his hallmark.

I saw the Schulmeister Series in Venezuelas Channel 5, which was state cultural TV in the 1970s. The Series were absolutely fantastic and brilliant. I remained a fan of this historical person because of this TV series. I have tried to find those again without luck.

That was superb! Would like to see the 70’s French drama series based on him. Talking of which the background music is the same as the 1998 Depardieu miniseries Count of Monte Cristo! 😊

someone of whom I knew very little... sort of a "la plus ça change...la plus c'est la même" kind of story, I'd say... 04:25 Schulmeister may well have been a german speaker, but at that time it must be remembered, that there was no such thing as Germany. that would be a thing of the future. in 1805 what we now know as Germany was a patchwork of small states loosely bound by…well, not much really. the HRE was still a thing (only for another year, though) Beethoven was putting the finishing touches to the Eroica, and good ole Nappy (now spurned by Beethoven after the coronation), was still seen by many, particularly in the lands dominated by Austria and Prussia, as a liberator. a notion they would soon be abused of. 33:13 being a native of Baden-Wurttumberg, Herr Schulmeister would *not* have thought of Prussians, or the Austrians for that matter, as countrymen. just as other old aristocratic conquerers.

Baden-Wuerttemberg did not exist until after WW2. He was from Baden, a sovereign margraviate inside the HRE and a Napoleon ally in the Rheinbund. The HRE was not at war with Napoleon and its members had no obligations to stand with the two competing dominant powers Austria and Prussia. Prussia and Austria were sovereign German nations who were generally adversaries to each other as well as to smaller German territories they tried to get under their control if not annex. How much Baden and Prussia were at odds will clearly become obvious soon later when in 1848 Baden becomes the birthplace of the German Revolution, which was brought to a violent end by the Kingdom of Prussia and led to a wave of immigrants to the US from all across south and west German lands. All that being said, Schulmeister was a loyal citizen to his sovereign.

Only dumbasses who don't have the resources to do it themselves call people traitors lol. If YOU could, you would, and if you truly wouldn't then you're even MORE of a dumbass. I don't care where you live, there is no government that is looking out for you in the middle of a war. Get as much for yourself as you can or be another statistic.

It all depends on personal perspective. The Napoleonic period was a different time in history where France was the "boogeyman" or "Liberator", depends on who you feel for, just like Germany during WW1 & WW2 and USSR during the Cold War.
@redwithblackstripes
@redwithblackstripes 6 месяцев назад
Careful with that thinking because you'll find that a lot of people you might like were unscrupulous traitors at that time, what is lost on a lot of people now is that back then, for A LOT of people in Europe France was indeed the "good guys"

@@joeshmo8267 do some serous research about the French revolution in 1789,secretely organized by the freemasons and the jacobins. They killed dozens of thousands of people ,religious people and the king Louis XVI who disapproved this revolution. They even destroyed many of our churches. Soon after,in 1792 they announced the "emancipation of the jews" and killed millions of Europeans during the Napoleon wars. How great is democracy,isn't it?
