Soult is one of only six people in French history to have received the rank of Marshal General of France. He attended Queen Victoria’s coronation in 1838 and apparently Wellington caught his arm and exclaimed something to the effect: “I finally caught you!”, referencing the fact that he never managed to fully defeat Soult during the Napoleonic Wars. A fun anecdote I thought I’d share.

An interesting fact about Neys trial that just speaks so much about his character. During the trial his lawyer noted to the council that Neys home town didn’t fully sit with the boarders of France as such they couldn’t fully try him. However, Ney being Ney stood up and put down his own layers defence saying “I am French and will always be French”

He was a brave man for sure. One of conviction too.

Many of the Marshals, like most French people, were ardent small R republicans. Meaning they supported a republican system of government rather than any specific political ideology. Don’t get it mixed up with the US Republican Party which is something else entirely 😂

I would really recommend watching the film Waterloo (1970) when you have finished this series. You can find it on RU-vid. It gives more of a personality and "face" to Napoleon and his Marshals. It's also a fantastic historical film!

Military theory is constantly shifting as new technologies and ways to wage war develops over time. But throughout the course of history the basic elements of warfare remain the same. That’s why great military leaders like Hannibal, Alexander and Napoleon are still studied today at military academies. The concepts of war that they helped develop still have value, as such there will always be a place for military theorists like Jomini and Clausewitz.

Neys father was a cooper, a barrel maker who would make different kinds of containers out of various woods.

I know it’s unrelated to this video but can we get a reaction to Epic History TV’s Belisarius Part 1: The Emperor’s Sword? It’s only got one video for now but a great video nonetheless 😊

Republicans in the US and Europe are very different things back then, in the US, its a political party, in most other places it's just people who support a Republic government.

“Republican” just meant they wanted a Republic. Completely unrelated to US politics and the “republicans” we actually to the left of the opposition, the moderates and monarchists. plus the Democratic Party was founded the decades before the Republican so that wouldn’t happen that way either

As LightxHeaven already told you here, being a "republican" in this context was someone being for the republic (as opposed to the monarchy) not supporting the equivalent of the American republican party. It isn't surprising since most of Napoleon Marshals weren't nobles or in the clergy. In the monarchic system there were three Estates/orders. The two first Estates were the clergy and nobility, they had many privilege. While the Third Estate (98% of the population) didn't have all of that. Being for the Republic meant the end of this unequal system. And since most of the Napoleon's Marshals were from the third Estate, it isn't surprising. Even some of the wealthy ones. Wealth =/= nobility.
