This is the only Ghalib poem that can be compared to the likes of Hafiz and Saadi and my favorite one too. This scene shows that the poem is way above the level of his audience which is why next time he is there, he makes up a simple poem for them.
Haroon Habib You don't what you are talking about. These people were (the audience) weren't uneducated simpletons. Zauq and Maumin are still names in Urdu Poetry, as was the king himself. And his next poem wasn't simple either, what gave you that idea? Ghalib brought something new, but he had to really polish up his work for it to get accepted.
the king was a poet but he's famous only because he was...well.. the king of India. but you're right about Zauq and Momin they were exceptional and they have rightfully earned their place among the greats. Even Ghalib himself acknowledged their mastery
AminTheMystic actually at thay time source of knowledge was not available every where.... so I think that was the reason that the people like zauq and momin cant understand the poem. ☺
they could not understand the poem you say? Zauq was a great poet and one fo the greatest till date. Momin was a very good friend of Ghalib and Galib himself admired Momin a great deal as far as we know. your comment is irrelevant and based on absolutely nothing. Ghalib is one my most favorite poet of all times but that's not reason to insult others
aale raza - No. You see they both had access to the same literature and knowledge. Both had interrupted education, but Ghalib was better educated. However, when Zauq through sheer talent eventually became the court poet, he had access to the best of knowledge. Zauq was a highly talented poet, his "downfall" and "rise" both were being a court poet. He got into bad habits writing to the taste of the king. In many respects, Zauq was better. He had a "natural" command over language and flow which was unmatched. Ghalib had the freedom to explore and bring new ideas, Zauq never did. Plus remember, most of what Zauq wrote was destroyed during the mutiny...

Shinu Pillai In days gone by, in Persia, present day Iran, complainants used to wear a paper tunic to the court while addressing the ruler with their complaint. So one has to know Persian history of times before Ghalib to fully understand this ghazal..Another 'shaer' is 'Kavey kavey sakht jaani..... If you have nit heard about the lovers Shireen and Farhad you cannot understand 'Subha karna shaam ka lana hau juey sheer ka' part of the ghazal. Happy listening. Dono kisi ko nazar nahi aaen Chal dariya mein doob jaen.
