Naqsh Jahan Square is also famous with the historical name of Shah Square and after the 1357 Iranian Revolution with the official name of Imam Square, the central square of Isfahan city, which is located in the heart of the Naqsh Jahan historical complex.
The historical buildings on the four sides of Naqsh Jahan Square include Ali Qapu, Shah Mosque (Imam Mosque), Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque and Sardar Qaysarieh, which is the main entrance to Isfahan Bazaar. In addition to these buildings, two hundred two-story rooms are located around the square, which are generally the place of supply of handicrafts of Isfahan.
Naqsh Jahan Square was registered as number 102 in the list of national monuments of Iran on 8th of Bahman 1313 and in May 1358 as number 115, it was one of the first Iranian works to be registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After its construction, this square was named Shah Square. This square was registered in the world heritage list with the same name at the time of registration, and it is currently registered in this list under the name of Imam Square.
Before the Safavid era, there was a garden called Naqsh Jahan. During the time of Shah Abbas II, due to the overcrowding of the surrounding bazaar and sellers, it was decided to build another square in addition to Atiq Square (or Old Square) and Shah Square. This square, which was located very close to Shah Square and behind the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, was named New Square. Since the old building in Bagh Naqsh Jahan was destroyed and its materials used at the same time as this square was built, the new square was also called Naqsh Jahan Square.
Over time, both old and new squares were destroyed and disappeared, but Shah square remained. In recent years, the old square has been reconstructed, but the new square, which did not have the beauty and charm of those two squares, was forgotten, and its only nickname, Naqsh Jahan, became Shah Square or Imam Khomeini Square.
Many tourists and tourists who have described the city of Isfahan in the past have spoken a lot about the grandeur of Naqsh Jahan Square and have described memories of the visits of ambassadors and foreign representatives and nationals of other countries to this square and many historical negotiations between Iranian statesmen. and foreign envoys were performed in Naqsh Jahan square.
میدان نقش جهان همچنین معروف با نام تاریخی میدان شاه و پس از انقلاب ۱۳۵۷ ایران با نام رسمی میدان امام، میدان مرکزی شهر اصفهان است که در قلب مجموعه تاریخی نقش جهان قرار دارد.
بناهای تاریخی موجود در چهار طرف میدان نقش جهان شامل عالی‌قاپو، مسجد شاه (مسجد امام)، مسجد شیخ لطف‌الله و سردر قیصریه که ورودی اصلی بازارچه اصفهان است. علاوه بر این بناها دویست حجره دو طبقه پیرامون میدان واقع شده‌است که عموماً جایگاه عرضهٔ صنایع دستی اصفهان می‌باشند.
میدان نقش جهان در تاریخ ۸ بهمن ۱۳۱۳ به شماره ۱۰۲ در فهرست آثار ملی ایران ثبت شد و در اردیبهشت ۱۳۵۸ به شماره ۱۱۵ جزء نخستین آثار ایرانی بود که به‌عنوان میراث جهانی یونسکو نیز به ثبت جهانی رسید.
این میدان پس از ساخت، میدان شاه نام گرفت. این میدان در زمان ثبت با همین نام در فهرست میراث جهانی ثبت شد و در حال حاضر در این فهرست با نام میدان امام ثبت شده‌است.
تا پیش از دورهٔ صفوی، باغی به نام نقش جهان وجود داشته‌است. در زمان شاه عباس دوم به دلیل شلوغ شدن بیش از حد بازار اطراف و فروشندگان تصمیم بر آن شد که علاوه بر میدان عتیق (یا میدان کهنه) و میدان شاه، میدان دیگری ساخته شود. این میدان که محلش بسیار نزدیک به میدان شاه و پشت مسجد شیخ لطف‌الله بود، میدان نو نام گرفت. از آنجا که عمارت قدیمی در باغ نقش جهان هم‌زمان با ساخت این میدان، تخریب و مصالح آن در آنجا استفاده شد، میدان نو را میدان نقش جهان نیز می‌نامیدند.
در گذر زمان هر دو میدان کهنه و نو تخریب و ناپدید شدند ولی میدان شاه پابرجا ماند. در سال‌های اخیر میدان کهنه بازسازی شده‌است اما میدان نو که زیبایی و جذابیت آن دو میدان را نداشت، به دست فراموشی سپرده شد و تنها نام مستعار آن، نقش جهان، تبدیل به نام دیگر میدان شاه یا میدان امام خمینی شد.
بسیاری از سیاحان و جهانگردانی که در زمان‌های گذشته به توصیف شهر اصفهان پرداخته‌اند از شکوه و عظمت میدان نقش جهان سخن بسیار گفته‌اند و از بازدیدهای سفیران و نمایندگان خارجی و اتباع کشورهای دیگر در این میدان خاطراتی را شرح داده‌اند و بسیاری از مذاکرات تاریخی بین دولتمردان ایرانی و فرستادگان خارجی در میدان نقش جهان انجام می‌شد.
