Nara, in the Yamato region of Japan, was the country’s capital from
AD 710-784 - and the cradle of traditional Japanese culture.
This special display runs in two rooms: the Asahi Shimbun Displays (Room 3) has treasures from Hōryūji, one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist temples, dating between the AD 600s and 700s. The Mitsubishi Corporation Japanese Galleries (Room 93) feature sacred sculptures and paintings from the great temples and shrines of Nara, from the AD 700s to the 1400s.
The Buddhist religion was introduced to Japan from China and Korea in the AD 500s, along with writing and new forms of government, transforming indigenous culture. For most of Japanese history, Buddhism has flourished alongside Shinto, native beliefs in kami (deities of nature and ancestors). In Nara, Shinto kami came to be regarded as emanations and protectors of Buddhist deities.

Nara is beautiful. The temples are so ancient the place should feel heavy, but it doesn’t. It is a place of joyful spirits, and deer. Lots of deer roaming around parks that you can feed. I remember a woman chasing a deer that was prancing away from her while slowly noshing on a piece of paper, which turned out to be her family’s itinerary for the rest of their vacation.

The painting he first talked about is strikingly similar to Hindu goddess Lakhsmi(laxmi), Goddess of Prosperity and Wealth who sits on a lotus and often is depicted with four hands with one of the hand having same position (Mudra) like in the painting She is guarded by her two sons Ganesha(Elephant headed god) and Kartikeya(God of war ) in Hindu traditional depictions Interestingly in India too Buddhism and Hinduism had early clashes but later they both came to peacefully coexist together

'Hinduism' is a false or erroneous label. it was an attribution from the Middle East and not indigenous to India or more accurately Bharat. The real name of India's spiritual tradition is Sanatanadharma which means eternal truth. This is not a religion with conversion or apostecy. There is no founder nor dogmatic scriptural authority. It is for spiritual seekers into the nature of reality with many truths ultimately culminating with Self Realization in Unity. Its basis is consciousness and direct experience, nurtured by mind, feeling and body in intimate connection with nature. Everything is interconnected as an extension of the Self. Bodhisena is a continuation of this dharmic tradition as Buddha was. The Buddha did not intend to create a religion nor did he reject the vedas. There was no conversion here too. His followers over time especially in the East misunderstood his teachings of transcending the relative into pure Being. This is Vedic. The Indian monks to China and Japan such as Bodhidharma and Bodhisena were Brahmins, knew and taught Sanskrit even a little Tamil, ayurveda, meditation and yoga. Buddhism declined naturally without persecution in India but it is still accepted. Buddha is accepted as an incarnation of Vishnu. In Thailand the Royal courts have Brahmin priests, Sanskrit pujas and even future of Ganesha, Vishnu and Indra. One of the Royalty confesses on television to the famous British documentarian David Attenborough in the Spirit of Asia. At Survanabhumi Airport on Bangkok you can see the stirring of the ocean for amrita by the devas tugging against the asuras with the cosmic serpent as the rope. This supposed to be a Buddhist country but its King's were named Rama and its ancient capital was Ayutthaya as in Ayodhya in India. Time for the British Museum to be less cut and dried and connect the dots of the remnants of Vedic civilizations in Asia. After ruling India for 300 years and looting, its high time. Sanatanadharma is unifying as in Vasudaiva Kutumbakm meaning 'the world is my family', the ancient motto of Bharat an open looped open architecture knowledge system that unifies diversity accepting all including secular atheism because knowledge is structured in consciousness and has a subjective dimension. Unity from unification isn't sameness nor uniformity for that would arrest development and evolution.
