STREET FOOD! We’re back for more in one of Japan’s most traditional cities, Nara.
What was once Japan’s capitol is now a place loaded with delicious street food for humans and deer alike. So, what’s Nara got to offer? I hope you're hungry!
★ YAKI IMO / Grilled Sweet Potato / 200 yen per 100g
★ YOMOGI MOCHI / green mowort mochi filled with azuki beans, slightly bitter, slightly sweet / 130 yen each
★ KAKI NO HA SUSHI / sushi wrapped in permission leaves 1000 to 15000 yen for 8 to 12
★ DORAYAKI / pancakes filled with azuki red bean paste / 600 yen for a large one
★ DEER RICE CRACKCERS / shika senbei that they love to eat / 150 yen per pack
★ SHIKA NO FUN (Deer Poop) / chocolate covered peanuts or soy beans / 350 yen per bag
★ SOFT SERVED ICE CREAM / 350 yen each
Probably the most famous street food is mochi prepared by Nakatanido, a hundred meters behind the Kintetsu Nara Station. The mochi making performace where Nakatani-san opens the shop window and pounds the mochi at lightning speed takes place a few times a day.
Stop by and ask about performance times because you don’t want to miss it. It’s served right after and it’s absolutely the best mochi in Kansai. I went at 11:30am.
Note that the deer are wild animals and although they’re mostly friendly, they will bite, charge and bump tourists. Please be careful especially with children.
Nara is an easy train ride from Osaka or Kyoto and worth a day trip or longer if you like hiking and trekking around nature to see temples and shrines. Perfect when the weather is clear.

I spent a bit less than 1500 euros for two weeks all included (transport, plane ticket, food, hostels, etc.). However, most people spend more, easily double or triple, especially if you plan to move around by shinkansen / JR Pass.

Nara is an awesome place to visit. I was in total awe of the giant budha at Todaiji. Not to mention the two statues at the gate. But the deers give me flash backs of the run-in I had with the deers on Miyajima. They can get kind of aggressive and one of them sneezed on me. I had deer boogers on my jacket all day. :( Another great video John. Love your work :D Makes me want to go back....

It's great that there are laws to protect deers from being harmed or killed by humans in Nara. Other videos on Nara show how chill the deers are in this city, even when around humans. They some times just lie as groups on the side walks and cars slow down when passing by to avoid hitting any of them. In other countries, those deers would be hunt down for their meat or for sport.

Hunted in other country? No dude, just other place... they're hunted all over japan actually. just because these deers are making money for human by being alive in nara doesn't mean they'll have any use outside of nara. I personally wouldn't want to live in a place where animals roam free on the street... would be a traffic nightmare. Good for tourism spot, a nightmare for urban area.

my wife and I were there on Monday and she absolutely loved playing with the deer. The mochi making was also very fun to watch and the mochi itself was delicious! absolutely looking forward to going back next year and exploring more of Nara and hopefully Uji as well.

That's cool. It's hit and miss whether you use a 's' on the end. For example sheep is singular and plural.
