Narcos: Mexico Season 2 Finale Explained by Scoot McNairy & Diego Luna
Warning: Spoilers are discussed in this interview
With Narcos: Mexico season 2 now streaming on Netflix, I recently sat down with Scoot McNairy and Diego Luna for an exclusive interview. During the wide-ranging conversation, they talked about filming the season finale and why it reminded them of a scene from Michael Mann’s Heat, what fans would be surprised to learn about the making of the series, what they will always remember from the making of season 2, what it would take for any of the drug kingpins to walk away from the life, and a lot more.
Narcos: Mexico season 2 continues the story of Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo (Luna), as he struggles to grow his empire while maintaining control over the various members of his organization. Meanwhile, the American effort to get revenge for the death of Kiki Camerana (Michael Pena) leads them down a dark path. The cycle of violence rages on. Narcos: Mexico season 2 also stars Alyssa Diaz, Teresa Ruiz, Alejandro Edda, Gerardo Taracena, and Jose Maria Yazpik.
Check out what he had to say in the player above, and below is exactly what we talked about.
Scoot McNairy and Diego Luna:
• McNairy & Luna talk about the season finale and filming the conversation between the two of them.
• How the finale felt like the conversation between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Heat.
• How Felix is laying out the future and what will happen now that he’s locked up.
• What would it take for Felix or any of the other drug kingpins to walk away from the life?
• What might surprise Narcos fans about the making of the series?
• What will they always remember from the making of Narcos: Mexico season 2?
• How much did they know about the arc of the season?

The last scene perfectly set up a third season and I hope that they make a third season. Narcos is bringing up issues that most people forgot about, and bringing back the discussion of the drug war. It really brings the point that America is not innocent in the war on drugs and calls out a lot of bull shit politics. I really appreciate that they keep a lot of the real stories in the show. A very respectable show that deserves all the recognition.

The only thing that Narcos glossed over is that there's heavy evidence that it was the CIA that actually killed Kiki Camarena, due to him finding about the agency's role in all this thing, including the cartel training Nicaragua's guerrilla fighters for them.

@@magtovi the showrunner of the show seems to disagree that CIA was involved: "Yeah, I don’t believe it. What is true is many [government agents] had interactions with the cartels for sure. In some cases they may have trained them. There was a time when the real enemy were the communists. The American government and the traffickers had a shared enemy. But I don’t believe the CIA would knowingly participate in the murder itself or the coverup of a federal agent, I just don’t buy it. Not when the stakes were these. If it was some vital matter of national security then that would be different."

The ending scene of this season reminded me the conversation between Ollena Tyrell and Jamie Lannister , honest but haunting .

These guys visited and filmed in Cerritos, SLP my home town, that's very cool. Diego Luna in my town is the coolest thing.

I’ve just finished watching the entire 50 episodes of this wonderful series, and, pun intended it was addictive. I’m sorry to see it’s finished. Brilliant storytelling and some of the most believable acting I have ever seen.

Netflix is deciding on season 3 for Narcos mexico...should know soon..but with the virus it might get delayed..

I hope they do extend the series, it was brilliant. I’m currently watching El Chapo on Netflix as I thought I’d watch a connected series , but it pails in comparison to the Narcos drama.

Well if I’m not mistaken, I think the next season is going to be on Chapo’s world...Right? Narcos is not over yet !

Nah, it'll be probably about the rise of Amado who became the biggest and most succesful dealer in the 90s .... there are many things before Chapos chapter gonna start ;)

I think it’ll be Amado Carrillo Fuentes. While he was getting big, the Sinaloa and Tijuana Cartels were constantly fighting.

I am really sad that Diego will not be returning for season 3 but completely understand him not wanting to play that character anymore. Narcos and Narcos Mexico has been two of the best shows in the past decade and I'm glad I got to see it.

Two actors playing beings from opposite criminal organizations killed this season. The pacing of narcos México differs from the original Colombian narcos played for. Like it’s more game of thrones esque than action thrill version og narcos fans were used to. And this matters because of what’s actually happening in Mexico currently.
