I'm going to take Skyliner and Narita Express from Narita Airport to Tokyo and compare what kind of advantages they have.
There are more options like Airport Bus and Narita Sky Access Train, but I only focus on the fast trains in this video.

Japan in a nutshell. A bunch of us took the Narita Express to Tokyo. We were getting our things organised since this was our first meeting together. I left a folder in the seat pocket with my JR Pass voucher in it, along with foreign currency that was given to me by two of my friends. Basically, my vacation was in that folder. We were out of the station when I realised what had happened. We ran back down, and they were prepping the train to send it back to Narita. They let us look. No luck. Gone. The manager asked the cleaners and one of them had found it and set it aside. She refused to take money and one of my friends said to bow very deeply and showed me how to say a very profuse thank you very much. Boy, did that have an effect.

I lost my JR Pass while carrying a mikoshi in Otsuka in 2015. Freaked out, scoured the neighborhood. And like you, I got INSANELY lucky when I resident found it and turned it into the police. "Only in Japan" doesn't begin to describe how my brain processed that.

One... Super small thing... To note between the two, the Narita Express' train that they use is very noisy. They occasionally run a service from NRT to Kawaguchiko (near Mt Fuji) and having been on that ride I can say for that particular EMU, it's very loud. Also the Skyliner has an excellent deal for foreigners where you can buy a subway pass in conjunction with either a one way or round trip journey which can really be cost effective when planning out a journey.

Wait... you didn't say if you liked one more than the other. I've only ridden the Narita Express and it's quite nice, but that coming from someone who lives in a place that has mediocre train service. Getting off at Tokyo station and leaving is easy. It was not easy for me to find the correct platform when it was time to go back to the airport.

Interesting. Skyliner was faster, but the Narita Express experience looked better. It's weird that the Skyliner car was mostly empty, but the computer still put you in one of the worst seats. You'd think it would be programmed to fill those last. (Also, I'm surprised that long tunnel at the airport doesn't have travelators. They're all the rage at international airports these days. :)

For those trying to decide between the JR Narita Express and the Keisei Skyliner, here are the key differences: JR Narita Express + Accepts JR Rail Pass. + More accessible stops such as Tokyo, Shibuya, and Shinjuku. Also very convenient for those staying in places outside Central Tokyo such as Yokohama, Hachioji, or Ofuna. - More expensive than the Skyliner (if you don't have the JR Rail Pass). - Slower than the Skyliner. - Ikebukuro and Omiya stops have been discontinued. Keisei Skyliner + Cheaper than the Narita Express. + Faster than the Narita Express. - Not as user-friendly as the Narita Express. Only main stops are Nippori and Keisei-Ueno. Tourists staying in Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, etc. are advised to stop at Nippori and transfer to a local train or subway. Transferring from Keisei-Ueno is more challenging due to its longer walking distance from the JR Ueno Station.
@robertdeloura1595
@robertdeloura1595 Год назад
We usually use the Narita Express on our trips, because we generally stay in the Ikebukuro area. Some of the Narita Express trains go there... or at least they did before the pandemic. That keeps us from dragging a bunch of suitcases from one train to another... and also keeps us from inconveniencing a bunch of other people by dragging those suitcases onto the Yamanote line. 😅

This video is helpful. I was just in Japan 2 weeks ago and took the Narita Express to Shinjuku, however Google Maps gave me horrible instructions. I overheard the instructions on the train on what to do but in my jetlagged state I panicked and followed Google Maps instructions to exit early and transfer to the Marunouchi Line. When I tried to transfer, it gave me red lights. Being more awake, I realized my mistake and tried to go back to the NEX, but it had just left. I ended up using a fare adjustment machine, exited and then used my Pasmo card to take the Maruouchi line to Shinjuku. I noticed in general Google Maps wasnt as reliable as when I last visited in 2019.

It had been four years since I last visited the country and man, dis I miss the organized chaos of its train stations! Even if I was hella tired from my longhaul flight, I loved every bit of getting lost in Japan, even if just for a night. I hope I get to take another trip there, the right way this time. Hands down, one of the best places I've ever been to.

N’EX is more bumpy than the smooth Skyliner (because the Skyliner goes on straight high speed track). If you just want to get to Tokyo, the Skyliner is better in every way and cheaper with the Metro Pass package. The N’EX is easier if you need a direct transfer to Shinkansen.

As someone whose ridden both before, the Skyliner is great for getting to Tokyo the fastest, looks, feels and runs great. It’s one of the fastest non Shinkansen express trains in Japan. Also has a lot of runs so if you miss one I think the next is only 40 minutes after. NEX is good too but really if you only need those select stops that it stops at like Sakura (Chiba) or past Tokyo like Yokohama and Ofuna then it becomes okay.

If it runs every 20 minutes, and it only takes about 40 minutes, and off-peak at any rate it looks far from full, the need for a reservation tying you in to a particular seat on a particular train seems a bit unnecessary, doesn't it?

If it's only a few extra hundred yen (extra dollars) for Narita Express, nonstop to Tokyo Station, over the Keisei Skyliner, which is faster but would require a transfer to reach Tokyo Station. Personally, I think it's worth the premium to have that direct service rather then having to navigate myself and my luggage through another station and onto a potentially crowded regional train to arrive at your final station.
