Eli, whenever I want to see and enjoy computer things in practice, I watch your shows; as a first step. Your language, appearance, presentations ... are natural. I think you have passion of sharing what you know. Even though I was anti-hacker of these NAS protocols 8 years ago, I enjoy the way you explain how things work to real users. Keep the joy full journey going on, Eli the ComputerGod -): - Babu Alluri.

Thank you! Nobody else manages to explain this without going off on a tangent trying to demo something in some proprietary networking technology midway through. I love your high-level, plain language conceptual overviews.

This is great lecture! i learned a lot. Just one comment as this video is almost 3 years old, many of the SANs today are moving to Ethernet from Fiber Channel utilizing fast connection of 1-/25/40 and even 100Gb/s Ethernet and with new virtualization switching protocols such as VXLAN, SRIOV the whole SAN gets much much faster.

Thank you, I doubt that I can use the info ever IMRL, but I am interested enough to pop by and learn a little. I am focusing on just making my own data and that of 5 or 8 machines safe, and keeping the corrupt files from being the ones replicated. I appreciate the way you teach, bringing the subject down to us and letting us know when we really should grab a textbook if we want to read up and understand the subject.

What is most important to understand is a SAN provides ‘device level’ mountable storage and NAS provides file storage.
@jonathanhill9350
@jonathanhill9350 10 лет назад
Since its an intro I would probably also suggest research into converged networking and NFS for SAN access. Fiber is still decent but with some of the newer network protocols (look into Brocade) you can get multiples of 10 Gbps to your storage array(s).

Great job eli, can I just point out in a standard virtual environment that when a Virtual Machine host fails the VMs that were on that host restart on a different host they don't magically continue running on a different host. There is an option in vmware called fault tolerance that runs 2 instances of the same VM on 2 different hosts at the same time, so if one of the hosts fails the VM on the other host takes over seamlessly without any downtime

You talking about a "NAS drive" (with it's own Os) or a server rack that has an array of RAID disks? SAN has been the most difficult concept to graph since a proper comparison has never been shown (practically) at different layers, and there is something called Vmware VSan too.

I can see the point you're trying to make, but strictly speaking, SMB and CIFS don't allow you to copy and paste files, the operating system is responsible for that. You can however issue redirect requests which can eliminate the client system as middle man and have file servers transfer to each other. This isn't synonymous with the copy and paste function, however. Sorry for being a nurderer, this is really a good video.
