Too bad it didn't last. He hit oil that race when Casey Mears blew up and man...talk about HEARTBREAK. I'm still not over it 17 years later lol

The thing is that Dover is a self cleaning track. Anything that happens at the top slides to the bottom.

Cause they used to have a rule that the entire field was frozen including the lap cars. There was no free pass and so lap cars were still lap cars. They also made all drivers including lap cars stay in their current position at the time of caution. No one gained or lossed positions on pit road and therefore the cars that were not lapped yet but were instead in front of the leader would stay there and restart in front of the leader. This was when they could still race back to the caution flag before being frozen instead at the moment of caution like it is now. Stupid and dangerous and am glad they changed the rule.

The wave around didn’t exist at the time. This is why it does. Previously, if cars were trapped a lap down when a caution came out, usually if in the middle of a green flag stop sequence, those cars would stay out and be at the very end of the lead lap in front of the leader. The other part around the wave around rule is that all of lead lap cars must pit under caution for a wave around to happen. Otherwise, it’s who was in front of the last car that pitted. Before that, when NASCAR ended racing back to the yellow, you had the first car one lap down get a free pass back to the lead lap.

I think Dover just doesn't fit with the current car. I think if there's a track that's gonna benefit from Next Gen the most, it's Dover.
