Nascar Group Qualifying Fails

Growing up a Nascar fan in the mid 2010's. I wanted to revisit the disaster that Nascar Group Qualifying was. Although Nascar still does this on some road courses and larger tracks, the attempt to do it on super speedway and regular 1.5 mile tracks did not go well. I hope you guys enjoyed this video and if you did make sure to leave some more suggestions in the comment section down below. Thanks for watching!

If I was Ryan Blaney in that situation, I would’ve gone out of my way to set the slowest pole lap of all time.

This why I loved playing NASCAR 14. Even Qualifying was fun and I liked seeing what the AI would do

It’s hysterical that they got rid of group qualifying due to the various problems from 2014-Texas 1 2019, brought back single qualifying, and brought back group qualifying for some ovals (I think) in 2022😕 Also their qualifying format on ovals sucks since 2022. Just let the cars do 2 laps around the track once and that’s it instead of just do 2 rounds on ovals. But man, I was a fan of knockout qualifying at the time. But the problems (especially in 2019) ruined it. It was getting harder and harder to defend it, but I couldn’t defend it anymore.

Surprised 2014 Talladega II's Q session wasn't in here. That's the one where drivers like Jeff Gordon nearly DNQ'd, and a full-time driver in Stenhouse missed the show. One of the last times in the era where the Top 35 were locked in that this happened.

Honestly, I love'd group qualifying. Hell the shenangians that would go on involving weird strategy made it honestly MORE endearing for me. It made qualifying interesting, it brought mind games and strategy. But people complained because apparently NASCAR can't be too fun.

I was upset when they removed group qualifying. I liked seeing the sprint for the pole in the 2019 race at Auto Club where Austin Dillon won and everyone was planning on pit road how they were going to get the pole. The sad thing is that was what ultimently ended group qualifying. It's good we still have it for road courses but you can't get much fun out of people running laps sort of in a group. I guess NASCAR can't "get too fun"

Nascar gets fun, different idea, so the fans complain how its "not like the old days" where people are dying or the tracks suck and what not, so they get rid of it and go back to old stuff, and then fans complain about not advancing and making qualifying boring. Lose Lose situation.

I think the group qualifying could have worked if it was a practice/qualifying session combined that would be about an hour or so long.

NASCAR'S tantrum over not returning to a traditional qualifying format was embarrassing. "It's boring".... it's qualifying, it shouldn't be exciting

I feel like with some decent rules, group quali would have worked well. Minimum speed rules and impediment penalties for starters. At least for road courses, ovals give to much advantage to the drafters not the air breakers.

(2043; NASCAR headquarters) NASCAR President Izuku Midoriya: Effective immediately, NASCAR is bringing back the Group Qualifying session, with a few changes. If a driver refuses to leave Pit Road in Round 1, he starts in the back for Round 2. If a driver refuses to leave Pit Road in Round 2, he starts in the back for Round 3. If a driver refuses to leave Pit Road in Round 3, he will NOT qualify for the main race; that same driver also loses a number of points EQUAL to his car number MULTIPLIED by the number of turns that the track has. The Clash, Daytona 500, and All-Star Race do not apply. If the race takes place on a road course, he loses a number of points that is his car number DOUBLED!! If the race takes place on a Roval course, he loses a number of points that is his car number TRIPLED!! If the race takes place on the Chicago Street Course, he loses a number of points that is his car number QUADRUPLED!! When a driver is disqualified from the main race, it means that the field will have less cars to start. (Second race of the 2044 NASCAR season) Fox Sports commentator: For the first time since NASCAR brought back Group Qualifying, half the cars that were supposed to start have refused to leave Pit Road for all 3 Rounds; this means that only 22 cars will start. (week after All-Star race) Fox Sports commentator: We're past halfway through the season and the field for today's race will only consist of 11 drivers. Most of what was supposed to be a field of 43 cars have been disqualified for refusing to leave Pit Road in all 3 Rounds of group qualifying. (week before NASCAR playoffs) Fox Sports commentator: It's the race before the playoffs and something shocking has happened: there is only one driver who qualified for today's race. The rest have been disqualified for refusing to leave Pit Road in all 3 Rounds of group qualifying. NASCAR president Izuku Midoriya is at Victory Lane. Let's listen in on what he has to say. (Victory Lane) Midoriya: Due to circumstances beyond NASCAR's control, I am hereby cancelling the 2044 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs; this means that the #25 car of Ash Ketchum is the 2044 NASCAR Cup Series Champion by default. Please bring the #25 car to Victory Lane immediately. (several minutes later; the #25 car is at Victory Lane) Midoriya: Ash Ketchum, because of the cancellation of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, you are hereby declared the 2044 Champion by default.

Group qualifying for the Daytona 500 was pointless. Back in that time they had 3 or 4 practice the group qualifying, then the Gatorade duel qualifying, which jumbled the field again, and the 500

I’d like to see some sort of elimination qualifying. Have all the cars on track in a big group, give them 2 minutes to set a time and then eliminate the slowest driver every minute until it’s just the pole sitter left.

As an F1 fan, these incidents are just Q3 at Monza in 2019 on steroids! I don't think the knockout qualifying format works on ovals.

Group qualifying had have done more harm than good. It was interesting but I assume it did more cost more in damaged cars than the actual racing? I never really watch the qualifying so I wouldn't know but I've seen clips of the crashes on YT.
