🤤 RECIPE: www.nyonyacook...
Nasi Lemak, the national and traditional dish of Malaysia, is rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves. Also highly popular in Singapore and Brunei.
The meaning of Nasi Lemak is literally “rice” and “fat”. However, the “fat” refers to the creaminess of the coconut milk. Nasi Lemak is a very popular dish that is widely available be it at roadside stalls, markets, food courts in shopping malls or even in 5 stars hotels. It is also sold prepacked at Mamak eateries, too. The fragrance of this dish comes from the rice which is infused with coconut milk.
Nasi lemak is usually accompanied by sambal, fried anchovies, slices of cucumber, fried or hard boiled egg, curry chicken, squids sambal, fried fish or Chicken Rendang. The list could go on according to individual preference. It is actually a wholesome meal by itself and can be taken any time of the day. Of course, do not forget the cup of Teh Tarik recipe to complement it.
As simple as it may seem, the preparation can be quite tedious. Cooking the sambal a day before may shorten the cooking time.
Fry the anchovies until golden brown and lightly fry the peanuts to prevent them from burning. Remove from the pan immediately because the heat from the oil will continue cooking them. On the other hand, if you do not like peanuts, just omit them. It will not affect the deliciousness of this dish.
Also check out the recipe for sambal and Chicken Rendang to complement your ideal dish of Nasi Lemak.

Dear viewers. I was born and brought up in Malaya and we had a tuck shop in our school at Ngee Heng. with ten cents that our father would give every of the seven children, i always picked Nasi Lemak. The taste of the small dish of rice and the sambal ( a sort of chutney to go along) is simply marvellous. The delicious taste still on my tongue. Our elder sister Indira is a marvelous cook who often makes Malayan dishes for me whenever i visit her. I have secured the Dawan Pandan plant and also found what lemon grass is. so no difficulties for me to make this wonderful dish. Hats off to you Miss and see you with some Malayan pastries too. affectionately, c.s. bhaskaradas

The tuck shop? Ten cents for lunch? It was a few miles away, but it must've been close in time to my own childhood. I used to get a meat pie and a cream bun from the Sydney tuck shop of my first school with my ten cents. I was already eating fine Malaysian food on Formica tables from The Malaya at its original George St location. Malaysian food rocks.

mmmm...this is interesting!! I love food from different cultures and this is really one I'm not used too...but where can I get the pandan leaves from and/or is there a substitute for it? Pls answer
@nyonyacooking
@nyonyacooking 10 лет назад
Fresh pandan leaves can be found at the asian grocer. If you can't find it, try using pandan leaves extract which may have some green colouring. BUT for this recipe, if you can't find pandan leaves, skip it because the leaves are only used to add some fragrance to the rice. You wouldn't want the rice to turn out green...even though it maybe pretty interesting :P

I am from northeast Ohio, U.S.A. In your tutorial, you mentioned that, in making Coconut Rice, you put 1 cup of rice with 2 cups of water, plus coconut milk with enough water to make another cupful of liquid. To me, it sounds like 1 cup of rice to 3 cups of liquid altogether. Do I have it right? Thank you so much for the excellent cooking tutorials. It brightens my day to learn about great tasting food from you..

I tried making this a couple of times using the same method as you used but somehow I cannot seem to get the coconut fragrance into the rice (like those from the food stalls; I wonder if it is because I used the boxed coconut. Saw another video where they partially cooked the rice till almost dry then steam it together with the coconut milk. Might give this method a try next time.

hai... selamat sejahtera.. hmm i just wanna give you a tip in cooking nasi lemak.. in cooking the rice, if you add a pinch of salt, it will enhance the creaminess of the coconut milk and make the nasi lemak to taste better.. and if you add some slice of ginger, it will enhance the fragrance too.. by the way, i do really love your channel... your videos are all great and beautiful and what is more important, i do really appreciate your effort to have this malaysian cooking channel so that people will get to know our dishes more.. thank you

Thanks for the tip. The salt tip and ginger is very true. I sometimes fry the ginger, serai and pandan leaves, then add rice to it. :D And thank you so much for supporting my channel. Malaysian food is so underrated and deserves more recognition :D
