A brilliant interview! Natalie's take on Manon - her primary motive being the appetite for life, desire to live the moment, rather than simply being materialist libertine - is so insightful. Seeing her in this role with J Kaufmann in McVicar's wonderfully Hogarthing production in Chicago was mind-blowing, and after that any other Manon pales against that memory, appearing to lack dramatic/emotional depth. I wish I can fly to Toulouse to see her last Manon this fall...
What a stupendous interview!! A good interview such as this leaves you with more questions than answers. Lots to think about...much better than the "so...tell me about yourself" interviews with people who have no knowledge of opera. Thank goodness for high school French class! Vive le Canada! :D
This is so strange. I just listened, and watched, 30 minutes of one person in a conversation with and unseen other.... using a language I hardly know at all.... and found it fascinating. Natalie is phenomenal.
I agree that this was a fascinating interview. I was only able to understand about a third of it because they just spoke too quickly for me, and I know that they were, in general, speaking much more slowly than in an average conversation! It has been quite some time, however, since I've had any French classes (fall of 1987...!), and I just don't have quite the command that I used to have. Does anyone know if this has been translated, perhaps in print or in a subtitled version of the French? I think there are some ideas she addresses here which are vital to some research I'm doing, but my French just isn't strong enough! Can anyone help? Thanks!!
