The hand gestures help serve as a physical reminder and guide for the movement of her air/voice. When singers need to spin a note, spinning or moving the hand actually helps change the way you produce sound.

Roberto Santos Luy: I beg to differ. It releases tension. Of course, one should only do this while rehearsing.
@emelpuck5437

Actually, some recent studies seem to show that making gestures when we speak, helps to built the speech itself. If I'm not wrong, there's a lab in France, in Genobles I think, where researchers work on this in order to help autistic children and adults to communicate with others. So, why not for singing ?

Roberto Santos Luy Think of tennis players grunting when they hit the ball. They do better if they grunt rather than not. Singers need this kind of kinesthetic to remember where a certain sound is. I wouldn’t judge unless you are a singer yourself.

This is the first time I heard this piece from Debussy and I legit cried. The interpretation coupled with the control in Natalie's voice is really just chef's kiss

This is beautiful. It is hard to say something intelligent when you have no complaints. The song moves with the energy from the piano. A good example of integration with the voice. And I enjoyed the studio setting. More interesting than a fancy, on-location pastorale.

Beautiful. I know that Natalie is a French singer, there's nothing to question about her diction. As a non native speaker singing French art songs, do we pronounce "r" like the native speaker? Or, do we just do a "proper tongue trill"? How do we actually decide for French Lyric Diction?

The music is actually marked Allegro, (happy) but certainly not slow; The movement is in the dotted quarters....
@carloolmos5507
@carloolmos5507 8 лет назад
+wistaphil you're referring to editorial markings and tempos set by publishers, which aren't always accurate and are very limiting. Those markings are someone elses' interpretation (Not Debussy') of Nuit D'etoiles. Dessay chose to make her own bold choices, which make this a unique interpretation and world class recording.
