TOWER OF BABEL
(words & music by Natalie Merchant)
See this house is divided,
see we’re broken in two.
It’s just a Tower of Babel,
everybody so confused.
Everybody feeling the danger,
nobody dare to make a move.
It’s just a Tower of Babel,
everybody so confused.
Everybody spellbound and waiting,
everybody roped and tied.
It’s just a Tower of Babel,
nobody gets out alive.
Everybody so confused.

In 2010, Merchant was interviewed by PBS NewsHour and she commented that, 15 years earlier, she began to "plan to age gracefully in this field (of music)." She mentioned, seemingly with ambivalence and perhaps even reluctance, "shaking my booty when I'm 55." As someone who came of age watching her as a whirling dervish in her 20s and 30s, I'm so glad that she's still shaking her booty at 59.

Her videos on this new record are amazing - I'm enjoying watching them one after the next. She looks directly into the camera with such conviction, confidence, and grace. It's hard to believe this is the same woman that had so much stage fright as a teen that she sang with her back to the audience. She exudes her power, experience, and wisdom in these songs. She's just gorgeous.

I love this song! I first noticed that her dancing has really improved. But this song is so apropos for these times. Scarily so. There have been so many times over the years when I've felt that Ms. Merchant has been an impromptu and perhaps reluctant keeper or saver or both of our collective souls. The best thing about her is that she hasn't lost sight of what really matters and has always shared her heart openly and vulnerably, caring about all of us and hoping for our best selves to emerge and avoid our destruction. Thank you for that - perhaps we're not all doomed after all. God bless her and her beautiful heart and breathtaking artist's soul. I hear it in her voice and in all her lyrics. In passing, I'd like to mention also how beautifully she has aged (I'm a year older than her and all I can say is "if only"). I love the gray hair, I think it's really beautiful and sexy. She is just as sexy now as she was when Tigerlily was released, and perhaps more so, in my opinion. I'm so excited to see her live in Boston this May! My youngest friends, a couple in their twenties, bought us all tickets for my 60th birthday that just passed and it's the best present anyone has ever given me and it definitely eased the scariness of turning 60. I hope Ms. Merchant's best friends will do something like that for her next year when she turns 60. I would, if I were her friend. Another "if only".

The Internet seems like a modern day Tower of Babel. It is interesting to consider St. Augustine’s thoughts on this matter, in that he saw the First Day of Pentecost being an 'inversion' of the Confusion of Tongues that manifested at the Tower of Babel long ago.💝

I suppose one could even introduce different forms of humor: Physical or Slapstick Humor, Self-Deprecating Humor, Surreal or Absurd Humor, Improvisation or Improv Humor, Witty or Dry Humor, Wordplay Humor or Puns, Observational Humor & Potty Humor. So when one interprets a passage of Scripture 'literally factual' when it is just 'humor of various types' it can lead to a lot of confusion. The whole idea of Sola Scriptura seems lost in ambivalence when you add to the mix the knowledge that Jesus spoke in Riddles (Parables) to outsiders, but very literally to his Inner Circle of Twelve Apostles one has to wonder in apprehensive horror at what is actually coming? Perhaps the Matrix stressed it in the right way in that we have to "ask questions".

@@gerardgerard5681 St. Augustine’s thoughts on this matter regarding the First Day of Pentecost being an 'inversion' of the Confusion of Tongues that manifested at the Tower of Babel long ago is called "Hidden Wisdom" by some. @@gerardgerard5681I used to live in Stoughton, Massachusetts. And when I lived in Massachusetts I was considering going to U Mass Amherst. I really wanted to explore the idea of our genetic predisposition for language based on the 12 Jungian Archetypes: Sage, Innocent, Explorer, Ruler, Creator, Caregiver, Magician, Hero, Outlaw, Lover, Jester, and Regular Person. I suspect each archetype manifests from a genetic predisposition. I got this idea by playing AD&D First Edition in the 80's. When I think of birthdays I think of our quickening. On a biological level, when you are experiencing the quickening of your child, that traditionally means you are feeling your child's first movement in your womb. But the real quickening is this bright flash at the moment of conception. The bright flash occurs when sperm enters an egg and it leads to a surge of calcium which, triggers the release of zinc from the egg. As the zinc shoots out, it binds to small molecules which emit a fluorescence which can be picked up by camera microscopes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BJ2x_5MSuyg.html In a theological sense, regardless of whether we are male or female, we are experiencing the quickening of the Holy Spirit when we feel the movement of the Holy Ghost in our soul. When we invite the Holy Ghost to fill our minds with light and knowledge, He “quickens” us, that is to say, enlightens and enlivens the inner man or woman. In 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, Paul admonished the members to act in a manner as becometh Saints. I pray the Holy Spirit quickens our love together in the Holy Ghost. ❤ Then after reading Matt Ridley's The Agile Gene in 2003 I thought more deeply about how Nature Turns On Nurture. I realized Skinner was more of a social behaviorist. Skinner did emphasize the importance of environmental factors on the formation of behaviour, he did not dismiss the influence of genetics on behavior. I say 40 Days of Hope Illuminate the Darkness - Eliminate Death - Choose Life - While Jesus was in Mary's Womb, the Heart of Christ was beating in unison with the Heart of Mary.

Her voice sounds different with age. I still remember These Are the Days was my anthem when I first went off to university in 1992! The song just invoked the freedom I felt and still feels so 90's to me. Takes me back every time I hear it!
