Yeah, kinda sad. He didn't have a fairy at the start of the game, he has to go through lots of things, he gets to know the truth about who he is and his parents, all that he lived is erased and nobody recognizes him as a hero, he loses Navi, then all he has to go through in Majora's Mask, yeah, his life was really tough.

The Hero of Time is the most tragic character in the history of characters. He was a young boy who had dreams of leaving the forest and becoming a hero. He then had to learn the hard way that the life of a hero wasn’t what he had wanted. This way he was forced to lose his home, and forced to save a world he didn’t know. He lost all of the friends he made, and the only person who knew what he was going through was Navi (and Zelda). When the Princess sent him back in time, he lost everything. Even though he was a child in the body of an adult, now he was a mature boy in the body of a child. It’s made so clear in the games that no one has any expectations of children. Now the adults made fun of him, or ignored him because he’s just a kid and he “doesn’t know anything.” Then he lost Navi. Navi was the only one Link had left, and now she was gone and Link was alone. This theme of loneliness is so brutally used in Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. One of the main themes in Majora’s Mask is loneliness, and ai think that reflects the poor boy incredibly well. Then when he returns to Hyrule, things change. He sees the friends he’d missed, but they aren’t exactly as he remembered. But that’s okay. He’s too scared to get close to people after the trauma of losing the. They have to show him how loved he truly is. He builds the relationships back up and he’s happy now. Navi doesn’t return but that’s okay. Until it’s not. The guilt of what he’d done slowly creeps up on him. He learns that Ganondorf had hurt people, destroyed villages all because he had ratted him out to the king. People die, and it’s all his fault. Why should he get to be happy if he caused all this disharmony, AGAIN? He has a family, and he watches others fall apart. He doesn’t deserve to be happy (but he DOES, he deserves the world, even though he thinks otherwise). He wants to make up for his mistakes. He fights for Hyrule. He fights for Hyrule SO many times, except this time, he loses his own life. And yet still, it doesn’t change a thing. Hyrule is still shrouded in darkness, and his sacrifice was for nothing. He dies thinking that all the decisions he’d made in his life caused bigger problems. He realises that his life was useless. He realises that if hadn’t done ANYTHING, Hyrule would’ve been better off. But then a century or two later, the Hero of Twilight appears. This boy Is of his his own blood. This boy defeats Ganondorf, whereas the Hero of Time, in this timeline, could not. All of his choices weren’t for nothing. His choosing to finally let go, and be happy? To feel safe enough to have a family? That’s what saved Hyrule. The Hero’s happiness is what truly saved the land. He had thought that he needed to step up and actually do something to help Hyrule, but he didn’t know that he didn’t have to do anything but live the life HE wanted. Wow, this comment was longer than I thought it would be. I’ve made it my life’s purpose to research and theorise about Link’s life, and most of what I said is just my head canon.

I mean I wouldn't say MOST tragic (I'd say he's up there with some other characters I know of) since I'm a Sonic fan, though half the tragedy that comes with those guys is a result of really shitty fucked up stuff related to how real people affect the writing (FUCK YOU KENDERS, FUCK YOU SEGA MANDATES LET THE POOR BASTARDS GO LET THE FUCKER CRY GODDAMN IT), but Jesus fucking Christ if those parts of the story are intended story elements then dear God the Hero of Time got fucked over big time.

That's because it is. Do you know how many people give up or have to consult a strategy guide at the water temple? Tons. In addition the water temple has something the other temples don't: a way to make the game unwinnable. If you use one of your keys incorrectly, you can't progress any further.

It feels so accomplishing to face against Dark Link with just a simple shield and the Sword that Seals the Darkness. Yeah, you could cheese it with something like the Megaton Hammer, but then where's the fun in that? It feels like a worthy test to simply have a knight-to-knight combat duel with nothing but your sword, shield, and spirit to save you.
