Most of the comments here are focused on the singer, or the music itself, which are indeed very beautiful, but let’s not forget the violinist in this video, Satomi Watanabe, who passed away last year. I am so glad she was able to make this video before she left us

It just does not get better than this. I have been a life long lover of Bach and choral singer. I was truly lucky to be part of a choir recently performing Bach B Minor mass in Liverpool with Nathalie conducting. Also we had the privilege of a days workshop on the piece with her. She is inspirational, her voice is unbelievably awesome. Even just singing through a couple of bars to show what she wants it was just glorious. I have been blessed by the experience so had to listen to this again over Easter

Je ne remercie pas l'ingénieur du son qui a excessivement fait ressortir la voix. Orchestre quasiment inaudible, et le violon de Satomi à peine esquissé en filigrane . C'est dommage. J'aurais tellement aimé que l'art de Satomi ait été mis en lumière mieux que ça, au moins d'égal à égal avec la chanteuse.

As a retired German teacher, I have already put in my request for this to be sung at my funeral Mass. I hope the violinist and the mezzo are both available. In Sacred Music there are many lofty pieces, but few come close to this aria from J.S. Bach’s Matthäuspassion!

Did she conduct the whole St. Matthew's Passion? It would be magnificent. She sings and conducts so "historical-informed" but also so "modern". I don't know how to explain. But sometimes, to often, conductors and musicians who perform this repertoire are maybe to "cold" and too much rational. They think too much about the correct rendition of the piece and they lose the emotional aspect.

Utterly addictive - the pinnacle of musical expression !

I love it. It seems like it would be really hard to sing an aria and conduct an ensemble at the same time, but listening to this, it turns out that may be exactly what the piece needs. After all, Bach didn't write "accompaniments" as an afterthought. He always wrote intricate polyphonic pieces of music in which the soloist plays an important but integrated role. And what better way to ensure everything integrates than to have the soloist conduct the ensemble? Of course that requires somebody who happens to be an accomplished conductor and a great soloist, but Stutzmann can definitely pull it off. Her singing of the aria is excellent to begin with, of course, and the violin solo is pretty much perfect, but it's the combination of it all that really makes a good Bach recording.

Oh wow! She sings! I've only been to a couple of her concerts with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and she was directing. I was struck by how emotive she was, and mouthing the words to the choruses of the St Matthew's Passion (most recent). I feel kind of silly for not guessing she is a singer.

I love the music but I don't like the video. I'd wish they had just shown the performance in real life. It seems strange to see the musicians smiling etc when the music is sad. I always avoid looking at the video to just focus on the music.
