Nathan Adams' permutation trumpet is the earliest known attempt by an American to introduce valves to brass instruments. Adams, who designed and created musical instruments, also served on USS Constitution's crew from 1824 to 1829 during the Mediterranean Squadron. This trumpet is dated 1825.
