So i have known Nathan for 25 years. He has agreed to perform a new song on my podcast. My cohost is Randy Fowler. Nathan is very private but the love I have seen from all over the world made him the perferct guest. The cast will be called Brothers from another mother. Look for the first fewto drop in a cpl weeks.
i literally started playing bass because of this song, and even tho 11 years laters i can't say i've become anywhere near nathan as a bassist... i'm so glad he made me embark on this journey.
His influence was huge on me as a beginning player 15 years ago. Spent the last hour looking for this. Please tell him he's a beast of a player and songwriter for me
I’ve been coming back to this video for years, amazing how this song impacted me. Every now and then I get reminded of it and need to have a listen at it. This should have at least a million views
3m7c nathan still lives in the boston area, i think. he's a family man. i knew him when i lived in allston (left side of boston). then i moved to amsterdam in 2003.
Since 2009 when i came across this masterpiece i remember it every couple of month and need to hear it. I wish Nathan would like to do more or do a reprise of this song. I would love that!
+ArtUtopic same here. when i found this gem i was depressed about my own playing. i did'nt know which direction to go... this song showed my what is possible and proved that you can write proper songs beeing "just a bassist". helped a lot. beautiful lyrics too... (btw aaron gibsons song "peace" is kind of the same genre. preety good too.)
hi azfryguy (hope i spelled that right). there's no overdubbing, if that's what you mean. we recorded into a video camera, bass on one side, vocal mic on the other. the film is cut together from two or three different *takes* of the song, which kinda amazes me that he performed it so consistently over multiple takes. but the sound recording is not a multitrack overdub, it's from 2 channels on the camera. my friend jimmy jay and i shot it in 2000, i finally edited it in 2002.
with the lvl of skill nathan have, im surprise that in those year, we didnt see him at all. i think he have two song on the internet that i ts, do he have a songcloud or something ?
Ten year later I come back to this incredible piece! Definitely one of my favorites that got me into playing Bass. Would love to see more of Nathan's work.
Do anyone knows where i can find the other songs ? i remember there was at least more 3 songs of Nathan : Bass to Gun Camera or something like that Victory blues Bass to space those are amazing songs like glove, but i can't find it anymore :(
hi dan, re your remark about hughes' "glove" that "There is no need for this video to be up here" ... i just figured since i made this film i should add it to my youtube thing. the one ericlepoutre put up in 2005 now has over 523000 hits. i think my copy posted in jan 2009 has a slightly better temporal resolution. but even 30 fps isn't enough to capture nathan's playing.
@deege10 nathan has a myspace page 'nathanplaysbass', and i found other links by googling 'nathan hughes bass'. i know he's busy raising a family now and might not be playing out too much.
We spend the day racing horaizon towords the falling sun It comes around again We spend the night racing horaizon towords the falling moon it comes around again and would never have been one to leave you here in sorrow i would never have been the one to leave you here but im the one whos stuck here racing for Tomorrow would it have been so hard to tell the truth my my dear my dear We waste out time drinking wine playing dumb games going downtown Is there any more to say we waste our time drinking wine playing dumb games going
Ok, so they broke up and what happened is: He created this timeless masterpiece She probably ate ice-cream all evening and screwed some random douche I believe we all know who won in this situation :)
Not to be a dick or anything and I hope I am wrong cause I have been a fan of this guy since I have seen this video. I think this song has two or three bass tracks. I know I am going to get flamed for this and people are gonna say "oh your just jealous!". Hell ya I am I can barley play bass a fraction as well as this man and talk. Again not trying to stir anything up.
You obviously haven’t seen him live. We played open mics together. No difference. You’re not jealous. You just don’t know how amazing he is. I was on after him on many occasions. He uses no effects or anything. Sounds the same live as here. Fyi
+sgcollins poor guy. i get his point though. i feel this song is perfect - exept that bridge/solo part. i figuered it is the artists decision to make, so it's just not 100% my taste, but still great. who am i to critizise this mans choices? it's a master peace.
Well, that was pretty terrible. Lyrics, melody or lack thereof, singing. Oh wait he's very technical on a bass! That must be good...i guess? Anyone surprised this guy is not more famous (as one comment stated) doesn't understand much about music.
Okay, so let's see your video of an original piece you composed for solo bass without effects with vocals as well. It's okay to have an opinion, but since you had to tell other people what they lack for their opinion, that makes this comment pretty douchey.
Somewhat valid point stated in the douchiest way possible. He won't get super famous, but I doubt he cares. If he had a backing band it would be more approachable. Regardless, he is straight up killing it on that bass.
