UPLOAD is set in a future where "humans are able to 'upload' themselves into their preferred choice of afterlife. When Nathan meets his early death, he is greeted by Nora in his version of heaven. The series follows the two as Nathan grows accustomed to life away from his loved ones, and the alive Nora struggles to stay afloat working her job alongside Nathan in the afterlife.

I reckon it had to be done in order for his mind to not reject the virtual world. His virtual life could only begin once his real life ended. Otherwise he'd be living a double life simultaneously while wondering if a human soul or heaven even exists and that would be confusing as hell (pun intended). Also, what would it be like to play your virtual self in chess? I wonder if in the next season, they will show someone who lives in both worlds and what that's like? And if the download system finally works successful, could you live a thousand years in virtual and then download the memories to the real you in seconds? Mind overload! And if you're "immortal", what happens when you eventual do everything possible and become bored? So many questions and what-ifs. Lol.

That paragraph is too thoughtful to be putting a “lol” at the end of it. But yeah, I agree those questions should be asked. It goes back to the old teleporter thought experiment. The upload device operates on the same principle: creating a copy of your memories and thoughts while destroying your original conscious self. Were the machine to malfunction, there would be two ‘you’s, not just the one. Than there is the question of eternity and how much is too much? Is “immortality” really all that desirable? Do things like love and happiness maintain their meaning in the absence of pain and loss?

If there is no decapitation, than he hasnt really been uploaded just made a virtual copy. There would be two versions of him, one that is dying and one that is doomed to eternal life, both knowing that there is another version of themselves
