Intended as a one-off ride and video, this turned out to be first in a growing series covering cycling in the highlands of Scotland - Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 7 Lochs and Glens North (Glasgow - Inverness). Watch for new sections as they get added. The routes are all done as return trips so you can see the conditions and scenery in both directions and are intended to give you a feel for the route, gradient and surface - as well as showcasing the beautiful scenery
**UPDATE 4 June 2016. The sometimes muddy 2 miles beside the Falls of Leny is now supersmooth tarmac. Nice. The steep rocky hairpins 1 mile south of Strathyre are still impossible except on an mtb. That's my vote for the next improvement. **.
Cycling in Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park - the Rob Roy Way - Callander to Killin via Falls of Leny, Loch Lubnaig, Strathyre, Lochearnhead and Glen Ogle Viaduct - and a return trip via Balquhidder. Total distance 47 miles round trip (44 if you exclude Balquhidder on the return)
If like me you’ve driven up the A85 to Killin, and spotted cyclists on the Glen Ogle viaduct and wondered what its like, or maybe you are planning a holiday in Scotland are looking for a Scenic off road cycle route - this video is for you.
It answers all the essentials about the route:
What’s the gradient like- how steep?
How high?
How far?
What’s the surface like - tarmac, light/heavy gravel, dirt?
Do I need a mountain bike? Can I rollerblade on any of it?
Shot 10 and 19 April 2015 for the best unobstructed views (no leaves on the trees yet)
GoPro Hero 4 Silver
Additional material Lumix TZ30
Aerial shots with DJI Phantom 2, GoPro Hero 3+ black, ZenmuseHD-3D gimbal
Edited with Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13. No stabilisation (it cuts the field of view). Unfortunately this is resulting in really bad RU-vid compression artifacts after upload - Maybe try chest mount next time.
Chest mount didn't help ... but a helpful comment on another video did ... disabling resampling in the editor has removed ghosting and pretty sure has reduced the bits needed for a clear picture. Too late for this one but good for the others.
Royalty-free music by Underwaterbeats
Cycled with a Specialized Allez Elite road bike with 23c mondo slicks- NOT recommended, but bike was OK.
All distances and altitudes approximate (Runtastic and Google Earth respectively)
Look out for the wooley jumper at the end.
Thanks fro reading the description :-)

Absolutely love Central Scotland, especially the Trossachs area. Just a beautiful part of the UK, plenty to see, enjoy and experience. Callander is certainly one of my favourites!!!!

Thank you for posting this ... so nostalgic. I cycled from Callander to Strathyre on my LEJOG about 7 years ago. I came off the route there to go visit Rob Roy's grave at Balquidder and saw the Glen Ogle viaduct from the road before riding down to Killin. I'd love to ride it again so I could do the section I missed.

Absolute magic! Thanks for putting this up. I did the Callander/Strathyre section probably 20 years ago on a road bike. Shook the gear completely out of sync so I chickened out and took the road back.

Yep, done today as planned and can heartily recommend it to anyone. Not been on my bike for a few months so the last 15 miles or so were slightly tougher, but still fantastic. I think I'll be trying out a few of your routes over the coming year for sure - oh and the weather was chilly but perfect - until we ran out of daylight 💡.

I've been doing a few of the route 7 sections lately and thought I would research the little bits in between I'm yet to carry out. That brought me to your videos, great commentary that has helped me plan my next adventure. Thanks for sharing. Balloch to Drymen possible Aberfoyle and return will be next. Sadly I've not been videoing.

Amazing Video! Have you ever thought about doing this professionally? You definitely come across very professional. I have done this route loads of times, It's one of my favourite routes in Scotland. I personally thinks its better ridden on a hardtail or Cyclocross - thats just my preference though... Thank you for putting together and sharing.

Kevin mc thanks for your kind comments. Absolutely ... Doing this on road bike is silly. But my cycle cross was out of commission that day. So I got it fixed up for all the other stages. Also as I found out ... the slightly thicker tyres on the cross bike make for smoother video footage

Thanks for this..Very informative and entertaining as well..I myself ride a road bike but not so much on the road these days..I'm finding these cycle paths just on the edge of being ideal for me..Could I ask you for your thoughts on fitting more suitable tyres for these rough parts..I'm currently using thin 23 mm tyres and wondered if using something chunkier would be a good idea? What would be your advice. Thanks in advance and sthanks again for the video..Think I might head up there soon.
@SartorialPictures
@SartorialPictures 8 лет назад
Thanks for your question. Shortly after this video I got my cross bike going and did another two stretches having fitted 32mm marathon plus tyres. Unless the surface was very rocky or muddy they do great. They are also pretty bullet proof and roll well on tarmac. stiff to put on the rims... but they feel like they'll last.
@smujiodome
@smujiodome 8 лет назад
+Sartorial Pictures Thanks for the advice. I did a wee bit research myself and it seems that the Marathon plus tyres are indeed the way forward. So I got a set for me and a set for my wife. Only trouble is that they are attached to 2 new bikes. lol. The tyres would not fit our road bikes due to lack of clearance so we got 2 new Cannondale caadx 105 bikes. We did a stretch from your video last week on the road bikes but look forward to doing the rough parts on the new bikes. Thanks again for your help and a great video.

Do you know if any further improvements have been made to the surface? I was going to do the route with a road bike
@SartorialPictures
@SartorialPictures 3 года назад
I last did the route exactly 1 year ago, and I'd expect no further change since then. So the only update from the video is the addition/improvement of tarmac from callander to the forest holidays park. That covers what was the muddy falls of Leny section. However, the other rough sections remain (1) the strathyre hairpins ... it's short so you can walk that in 5 minutes and (2) the descent into Killin. This is longer and is a bumpy land rover type track. I did it in 23mm tyres in the video so if your road bike is more modern than my 2008 allez and has say 28mm tyres it would be more comfortable than I found it, so long as you take your time.

ZED JZARA ha ha well I had a mountain bike but found it tough going for road sections and I ruined it by running through too much snow and salt roads. So I got a cycle cross instead. That's tough enough for most of what 7 throws at you. The rest I just walk :) and,of course, wish I still had the mountain bike.
