The library was started in 1836 as Calcutta Public Library. In addition, in 1891, the foundation of the Imperial Library was laid. In this library, mainly those books were given place at that time which were taught in the colleges of that time under English administration. Only big government officials had the right to visit this library. In 1903 Lord Curzon, then Viceroy of India, proposed to build a public library. After this, the Imperial Library was inaugurated on 30 January 1903, combining both the Calcutta Public Library and the Imperial Library. After Independence, on 1 February 1953, this Imperial Library was declared as the National Library of India by the Government of India. This library is now under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
The National Library of India's special collection includes at least fifteen languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Sindhi, Telugu, Urdu and Tamil in several Indian languages.
The library is located on the beautiful 30-acre (12 hectare) Belvedere Estate. Before independence, it was the official residence of the Governor-General of India.
This library has more than 22,70,000 books, 86,000 maps and more than 3,200 scripts.
The shelves of this library occupy more than 45 kilometers of space.
This library was an NGO. Therefore, after starting in 1836, a system was created to increase it further, under which any person could become the owner of this library by paying 300 rupees at that time. Dwarka Nath Tagore became the first owner of this library by paying 300 rupees.
This library has a system of reading of more than 550 people simultaneously.
The Delivery of Books Act 1954 requires every publisher to submit 4 copies of their publication to enhance the collection of information sources in the library and preserve it for the next generation. Each 4 copies go to - 1. Kolkata, 2. Tamil Nadu, 3. Mumbai and 4. Delhi Public Library respectively.
In 2010, when the Ministry of Culture decided to repair the library with the help of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the engineers discovered an unknown room which was about 1000 square feet in the ground floor of the library. Since the building is of historical and cultural significance, the ASI has decided to go inside through a hole in the wall instead of breaking it. The room speculated that the room was used by Warren Hastings and other British officials to keep the treasure, but in 2011, researchers announced that the room was completely filled with mud and that it might have stabilized the building Was attempted to do
The National Library of India has also created a mobile application so that it can be accessible to all citizens of the country.
The then Governor General, Lord Metcalfe, gave 4,675 books for the Calcutta Public Library from the library of Fort William College, Kolkata.
