Silver Mica Disease! Yes, as suspected, this radio has that issue. So it's time to tear down the IF cans and replace the degraded mica caps. Also a chance to rant about people who knot the wires onto tags before they solder them!
IF transformer repair work separates the men from the madmen (with a delicate touch). Couldn't resist this remark: You might want to use NP0 ceramic capacitors in there, they are temperature stable and good for RF work. Again, enjoying the updates on this work, Tim, thank you.
Yes, to be honest, Joe, this is not a great radio anyway, it's very basic.. I have gone with the caps I happened to have, and it now works OK. I've still got the line voltage transformer to sort out, though!
